2023 RAM 1500 Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

First incident, vehicle completely lost power and turned off while driving down highway, fortunately I was able to coast in to shoulder and request a tow. Second event the vehicle flashed all warning lights while traveling down interstate and had a quick shudder. This was similar to first incident. However, lights eventually cleared themselves and power wasn’t lost. Third incident vehicle warning lights flashed on and lost power. Eventually restarted and drove to dealership. Mechanic visually witnessed vehicle lose power again while in inspection bay. Engine control module was replaced during visit. Two weeks later, vehicle failed to start again with same symptoms of all the warning lights and check engine lights being on. Vehicle was able to start next day and was driven straight to dealership where it currently sits. These repeated and spontaneous engine failures, including when driving at highway speeds, are an extreme risk to my life and the life of others and are unacceptable for a vehicle with 45,000 miles.

APPROXIMATELY THREE WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE, THE ENGINE SEIZED UP AND NO LONGER RAN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND GOT A ENGINE AND SUPERCHARGER REPLACEMENT. FROM THAT POINT ON, THE STRUCTURE IS BEEN NOTHING. BUT PROBLEMS AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK FOR THE SOLE REASON OF IT ACCELERATING BY ITSELF. AND ME ONLY BEING ABLE TO STOP IT BY HOLDING THE BREAKDOWN. ALSO UPON THEN REPLACING THE ENGINE AND SUPERCHARGER. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THEY DID A THOROUGH INSPECTION OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. AND POWERTRAIN SYSTEM HAD THEY DONE THAT AT 43000 MILES WITH A BRAND NEW POWERTRAIN SYSTEM. MIND YOU CATALYTIC CONVERTERS WOULD NOT BE FULL OF SOOT. THIS IS DEFINITELY A DEFECT IN THE WORK THAT WAS DONE. I AM ASKING FOR A BUYBACK OR A REPLACEMENT TRUCK. Also, there are several. They are kind of saved in the truck, validating this issue.Amongst many others. This vehicle is no longer safe. I think that this vehicle is a liability.

The major, widely reported, 1.4-million-vehicle Ram recall regarding malfunctioning tailgates that may open while driving primarily affects 2019–2022 model year Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks, not the 2023 model year. The issue stems from misaligned striker plates that can cause the tailgate to unlatch.

The dash board showed the (A)auto start stop amd the (P) parking brake after hitting a puddle in rain. I brought the vehicle into the dealership for service on 4/18/2025 . They replaced the right rear caliper and EPB actuator and it temporarily fixed it. The lights still came on but would go off in rainy conditions. They came back on and didn’t go off so I brought it back to the dealership in again on 3/2/2026. First said they would fix the same part now after having my truck for 2 weeks claim it’s not the parking brake actuator but the main wiring harness and refuse to fix it under warranty of their work. I am now told by them they have to replace the entire wiring harness on my expense. Called customer support at ram truck and still haven’t heard back if they would do anything

* Sudden shutdown while driving * Dash failure * “Vehicle not in park” message * RF hub failure * Recall references While driving at highway speeds and without warning the entire dashboard shut off and the vehicle lost power. The message “Vehicle Not in Park” appeared. My son was forced to coast off the highway to safety. Once the vehicle stopped, it shifted itself into park. The truck restarted briefly but failed again shortly after. Luckily this time he was able to drift into a nearby gas station. At that point the vehicle had no dashboard lights, no ignition response, and no electrical power to the drivetrain, though interior lights still worked. Vehicle would not start and needed to be towed to the dealership where is sat for 12 days before they replaced a water damaged RF hub. There was no cracks or leaks located but there was water damage. Weather conditions: Sunny and dry, temperatures in the mid-50s. This failure created a dangerous situation. While driving at highway speed. This incident placed my sons life and the lives of others on the road in danger. Since this frightening event, we have conducted extensive research and discovered that this appears to be a well-documented issue affecting Dodge Ram trucks, specifically involving moisture entering the cab and damaging the RF hub, which can cause electrical failures and loss of drive power. The dash shutting off and truck losing power while driving — is a major safety issue. Situations like this are known to fall under sudden loss of power / drive power investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). I' am requesting a formal investigation into the moisture intrusion issue affecting Ram trucks, consideration for a recall or technical service bulletin addressing this defect and invoice reimbursement.

My 2023 Ram 1500 TRX has recurring safety-related failures of the infotainment system affecting both Uconnect 5 (12” screen) and earlier Uconnect 4 units. These issues are widespread in 2021–2024 Ram TRX and Ram 1500 models and began or worsened after forced over-the-air updates. The primary defect is screen failures while driving. When the screen goes black or freezes, the truck loses all functions controlled through the display, including HVAC/defrost, backup camera, vehicle settings, seat controls, and performance gauges. This creates an immediate safety hazard: I cannot adjust climate/defrost, cannot see the required rear-view camera when shifting to reverse, and cannot access key vehicle information. Owners across multiple years consistently report: • Black screens, freezes, and reboots • Loss of HVAC control and dual-zone functions • Backup camera not displaying • Vehicle/Apps tabs failing to open • Uconnect error messages • Smaller, harder-to-read gauges after updates • Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto failures • No option to decline or roll back OTA updates These failures distract the driver, remove access to federally required equipment (rear camera), and eliminate visibility and climate controls that directly affect safe operation. The system becomes unpredictable and unstable despite the vehicle being in motion. My vehicle experiences the same issues, including a frozen screen while driving, loss of HVAC, camera not available, etc. Because this affects essential safety-related controls and visibility, I believe this is a safety defect in Ram/Stellantis Uconnect 4 and Uconnect 5 systems. I request NHTSA open a defect investigation and require Ram to correct these failures.

Vehicle brake pedal is not fully depressing to normal state after use. This is causing the break lights to remain on until you pull the pedal itself back to resting state. If you do not do this the cruise control will not work. The ESC error light and Service Trailer Brake System error continue to come on.

This creates an immediate safety hazard: I cannot adjust climate/defrost, cannot see the required rear-view camera when shifting to reverse, and cannot access key vehicle information. The Connected Services system in my 2023 Ram TRX regularly displays large, full-screen alerts for emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and lane closures — often when there is no actual hazard present. These alerts are extremely distracting and dangerous. They: Block the entire screen, hiding navigation, camera, and HVAC controls and leaving the screen black until the user interacts with it multiple times to put it back on navigation. Require multiple presses to clear, forcing interaction while driving. Often reactivate within seconds, creating a loop of screen interference. Have triggered during merging, construction zones, heavy traffic, and when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks, where focus is critical and lives are at risk. Occur falsely 80%+ of the time — no hazard is nearby. Cannot be disabled, according to Stellantis. These alerts violate basic safety interface principles by forcing unnecessary, repeated interaction in active driving conditions, forcing distracted driving. The system is overly aggressive, not user-configurable, and poses a significant distraction risk. Numerous owners on Ram forums have reported similar experiences, including repeated false triggers in the same areas. I am requesting NHTSA investigate this system. Stellantis should be required to: Offer a toggle to disable or limit alert pop-ups. Redesign the alerts to be non-obstructive and passive, or limit them to actual verified hazards. Until addressed, this is a serious safety issue affecting many drivers. I have video evidence of the issue occurring that I can provide.

In two separate instances, after coming to a stop while driving (traffic light/stop sign) when attempting to accelerate the engine revved but car did not move. The car remained in the “run” position and the emergency parking brake engaged. Similarly the display alerted that safety parking brake was activated. Vehicle would not shift out of drive. Issue was remedied by turning engine off and then back on and disengaging the parking brake. This does not happen every time I stop the car and has happened only twice in the past 100 miles.

This is the second time I am filing a complaint in regard to this issue. I was driving on a very busy road, when my vehicle had come to a complete stop. The dashboard read: “EMERGENCY BRAKE” in red, then the emergency brake had turned on by itself. After trying to turn off the brake, the vehicle completely turned off. I had to restart the vehicle, in which case it turned on in neutral. This was extremely dangerous for myself, and the people around me in the intersection. I can only hope this problem is resolved quickly.

On [XXX] at 6:15 PM approximately my brakes failed to engage and caused a rear end collision on [XXX] . This accident was caused by my brakes not responding at all when pressed fully to the ground and causing a collision and damage to two vehicles Loss of vehicle usage, property damage, and loss of work, After the collision I received an email from Dodge Fiat Chrysler at 2:01 AM on November 26th 2024 saying that there was a safety recall regarding the electronic braking system A B S module ESC system that states it can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. This email came in after the accident, and I and the other party suffered multiple damages due to the malfunction of the braking system in my 2023 Dodge Ram. We were going approximately 10- 15 miles per hour, When the woman in front of me broke very hardly, and she claimed she was talking to her child, and I was unable to use the brake as it was not working and pressed to the floor and complete loss of control of the braking system. i was unaware of this issue prior to this email after the accident at 2:01 am the following day, In opinion Dodge Chrysler should be responsible for the damages caused to both vehicles including property damages as we are all out of a car and out of work currently. When I was driving on a very busy road, the emergency/ parking brake immediately turned on while the truck was returning back in motion, which made the car come to a complete stop. I had to manually turn off the parking brake, even though I was not the one to turn it on in the first place. This could have put the people behind me in serious danger, as they could have hit me and then been seriously injured. The problem was brought to the attention of the manufacturer, and they had just asked me if I had turned on the brake with my knee. After being met with an apology, I was asked to bring the truck into the servicer the following morning. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and they only appeared after this had happened.

Check engine light blinks on and off intermittently, vehicle shakes and feels as if it’s going to stall. From time to time when going to accelerate I pulled out on a main roads and the vehicle lost all power my kids and I flew forward. While idling at a red light, the vehicle started to shake as if it was going to stall and jerked forward and hit the car in front of me. I brought this to the attention of the dealer. I purchased it from and They stated they cannot find any issues. I have pictures and videos of the check engine light coming on in intermittently. I also called when it lost power, pulling into the intersection. This all should be recorded with Jerry Ulm dealer in Tampa.
