2018 RAM 2500 Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The electronic throttle control light and check engine light are on. I took it to a mechanic and had the accelerator pedal replaced. The lights remained on and the truck remains in "limp mode" and will not go over 59mph. The mechanic stated that this is due to the unresolved recall problems with the traction control and anti lock braking system, and the HCU needing replaced. These components and labor are over 2-3 thousand dollars! I have called NHTSA and the manufacturer with questions and asked for a timeframe for a fix and have received nothing.

Vehicle has not has cruise control, abs, traction/stability control for over 2 years. No traction control or stability in the winter is horrible. Not being able to control speed when traveling is inconvenient. The warning lamps illuminated and went away for weeks. Then randomly just stayed illuminated. Abs hydraulic pump has failed. The recall has been open for over a year and a half and no parts or remedy to fix it.

Vehicle is unsafe to drive due to the loss of ABS and traction control. The constant dinging of the warning is very distracting. Stellantis, Ram Trucks, and local dealers do not seem to care that this has been an ongoing issue for over a year and still do not have any parts for the recall.

There has been an open recall on my vehicle for over 2 YEARS ! even the recall states "...may cause a vehicle crash without prior warning." This has negatively affected and is a safety issue which involves: 1) Electronic Stability Control - turns off and on - doesn't work 2) Cruise control - cannot use, turns off on on on it's own 3) Steering - affects the steering wheel when turning the wheel, the wheel vibrates and wobbles 4) Traction control - turns off and on 5) Anti lock braking - turns off on on It is my only vehicle which FCA/Ram knows is unsafe to drive but I must drive to work etc. I cannot resell or trade this vehicle in because of the enormous loss in value since it is not repaired by FCA or who ever owns Dodge Ram at this time. I have on multiple occasions contacted FCA/ Chrysler/ and the dealership about the issue, opened numerous cases about the unresolved issues and attempted to get a status with no remedy or timeline provided by the manufacturer. If my family is in the vehicle and we crash... who can I sue? Chrysler? the dealership? or the NHSTA for allowing an open SAFETY recall to continue for over 2 YEARS!!

I traded my 2001 F250 for this yard art with intentions pf pulling our fifth wheel all over the country. It has sat un-usable for two years. I would happily pay for the parts if they were available. They are not at least that is what the dealer keeps telling me. Milton Ruben in Augusta. The recall is about two years old now and nothing is happening. I can't sell it, I can't trade it,, This is complete BS. And as I understand, there are around 36,000 affected by this??? You can't drive it because of the constant chiming and no cruise control on trips,,

My vehicle has an open safety recall (24V896000) with no available remedy for over a year. I'm not sure why you guys aren't seeing it. The ABS warning light is illuminated, indicating a failure of a critical safety system. I reside in [XXX] where annual safety inspections are required and that date is now here. Despite the defect, the vehicle was passed by a Dodge dealership knowing the ABS system is not functioning properly as there isn't a fix. The manufacturer, Stellantis, has no repair available and no timeline and I've only gotten the run around from their recall department and corporate. I am being forced to operate a vehicle with a known safety defect or not use it at all. This situation leaves consumers without a remedy for a federally recognized safety issue. Manufacturer Recall C4B and NHTSA Recall Number 24V-896 have not been addressed by the manufacturer. Both recall notices were issued Nov. 27, 2024. The following conditions have occurred in the 2018 Ram 2500 I own. "Vehicles may have been built with a brake hydraulic control unit ("HCU") that is susceptible to failure or malfunction which may result in a reduction or change of Anti-Lock Brake System ("ABS")/Electronic Stability Control ("ESC") /Traction Control performance. A failing HCU will initially result in the intermittent loss of ABS/Traction control progressing to permanent loss." The HCU failure causes the failure of the ABS function, the Traction Control function and the failure of the Cruise Control feature. The failure of these integrated safety features dramatically increase the risk of accident, injury or death. The warning lights associated with the system failure are ABS, Traction Control, and Service Electronic Braking System. The indication for this failure have been occurring since Feb 12, 2025.

No incident has happened yet but I don’t want an incident to happen to get this fixed. The HCU and ABS are not working properly or at all I’m not too sure. The sensors on the truck don’t work. The 4x4 don’t work either. The cruise control doesn’t work either. I need my truck fixed asap.

The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while attempting to tow a trailer, the electronic braking system became inoperable with the ABS, ESC, and EBS warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the electric braking system failed to function properly while towing, preventing the trailer brakes from operating as needed. Additionally, the cruise control feature was inoperable. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the parts for the recall repair were not yet available. The vehicle was taken to several dealers but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealers confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,121.

Was towing with my 2018 Ram 2500 ... truck ABS failed to engage under emergency stopping narrowly missing stopped car in front of me... truck took substantially longer to stop and brakes locked up... There is an outstanding recall on this but RAM says parts are not available... there appear to be in excess of 317,000 large heavy duty Ram trucks on the road, probably most towing heavy loads, with failing ABS and Hydraulic Control Units (HCU). At what point will Ram be made to actually fix the problem and make parts available to their service dealers versus just ignoring the issue??? Now the truck has permanent ABS light on but no parts from Ram to fix???

I am submitting this complaint about Safety Recall C4B / NHTSA 24V‑896 for my 2018 Ram 2500 (VIN: [XXX] ). I am active‑duty military living in Virginia; the truck is registered in Tennessee. FCA’s recall notice says the brake hydraulic control unit (HCU) may fail, causing intermittent then permanent loss of ABS, ESC, and traction control, and that this “may cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.” My truck shows as affected, but I have been unable to get the recall repair. The notice also states that the remedy is “not currently available” and that FCA will contact me when it is. As of February 2026, more than a year after the recall was initiated, I am still being told that parts are unavailable and there is no firm ETA for when the repair can be performed. In the meantime, I continue to drive with a known safety defect FCA has already acknowledged. My truck’s ABS and ESC lights cycle on and off while driving, consistent with the defect description. This creates real concern about whether ABS/ESC will function during emergency braking or low‑traction conditions, especially given that I use the truck for commuting and towing. I am also aware that FCA is reimbursing owners who have already paid out of pocket to replace failed HCUs, which suggests that replacing the HCU is the recognized fix, even as owners like me are told there is “no remedy available” under the recall. This appears to leave many vehicles on the road with a known safety defect and no timely, practical way to obtain the promised free repair. I respectfully request that NHTSA review FCA’s handling of Recall 24V‑896, evaluate whether FCA is providing a remedy within a reasonable time, and consider any enforcement or additional oversight needed to ensure parts are supplied and repairs completed promptly for all affected vehicles. This has been a recall for almost 2 yrs now and the dealer is saying no parts available. There are 1000s of RAM trucks driving around waiting for parts. A simple google search shows there are parts available on line. What is taking so long. This should have been resolved a year ago.

Received a recall letter Jan 2024 concerning C4B/NHTSA24V-896. I have contacted the FCA recall assistance center several times since then. They say there is no parts available for this recall. Yet they have not seemed to have this problem with 2019-2026 models. They say I can have the HCU replaced at my own cost and they will reimburse me for the cost. But there is no guaranty it will fix the problem or how long it may last if it does. This causes me problems because why should I have to pay nd Waite on my money to be returned to me in 60 days. I am retired and on Social security and can only afford to put this on a credit and which I would have to pay interest on. It seems you or FCA has any intentions of coming up with a fix for this recall.

My 2018 Ram 2500 has an active safety recall for the ABS/EBS system that has been open for over two years with no remedy or parts available. The issue was first noticed in August of 2023. I contacted CDJR dealership on how to repair this issue. This is a serious safety defect that directly affects braking stability, trailer brake communication, and emergency handling. Because the ABS module and electronic brake system are malfunctioning, the truck cannot safely perform the heavy towing it was purchased for. When towing a large trailer, the trailer’s electronic braking system does not communicate with the truck, forcing the truck to absorb the full braking load. This has resulted in unstable braking, increased stopping distance, and unsafe emergency handling at highway speeds. The ABS fault also disables cruise control, which significantly increases driver fatigue on long-distance trips. I regularly travel 1,500 miles each way to Florida, and without cruise control I must maintain throttle manually for hours at a time, requiring more frequent stops and reducing alertness. This defect has caused premature brake wear due to the trailer brakes not engaging properly. I was forced to replace the rear rotors and pads at only 32,000 miles, costing me $2,700. This is not normal for a heavy-duty truck and is directly related to the ABS/EBS failure. The unresolved recall has also severely reduced the resale and trade-in value of the vehicle. Dealers discount or refuse vehicles with open safety recalls and no available remedy. I am also paying $138 per month for a Mopar extended warranty that I cannot use to repair this defect because the manufacturer has not supplied the necessary parts for over two years. This is an unreasonable delay for a safety-critical recall. The vehicle is unsafe for its intended purpose, creates financial harm, and exposes me to ongoing risk every time I tow. I am requesting NHTSA intervention to compel Stellantis to provide a timely remedy.

It has been 7months since I bought my truck. STILL I have an open safety recall that hasn’t been fixed since no parts are available. I live in the Midwest and bought a ram truck just for the snow and conditions. I’ve been stuck more this winter than ever due to this abs recall. It takes away traction control, takes away cruise control. It’s not safe at all. I need this figured out IMMEDIATELY

CB4 Recall Some (2017-2018 MY Ram xxx) vehicles may have been built with a brake hydraulic control unit ("HCU") that is susceptible to failure or malfunction which may result in a reduction or change of Anti-Lock Brake System ("ABS")/Electronic Stability Control ("ESC") /Traction Control performance. A failing HCU will initially result in the intermittent loss of ABS/Traction control progressing to permanent loss. Been dealing with this issue since the recall got initiated back in November 2024. I call Mopar every month to check on the status and still no parts available. I haven't had any brake failures in my truck or scares, but whoever has this issue has to understand how annoying the constant chime is. Can't use cruise control and worst thing is if you are considering selling your truck outside of a Ram dealer, they won't take it in because of the open recall and privately, who would really consider buying a truck with this issue. My fear is that Mopar (Stellantis) is just putting this in the backburner with no plans on fixing it.
