Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

On 6/16 we experienced a Freightliner Optiview Dash Flat Panel Delamination with resulted in lines going through the gauges on the Dash. The Dash appears to be functioning with the defect. Initially we thought the flat panel display had cracked. We contacted Freightliner 24/7 Technical Support (Case #15355287) to report the issue. The Representative said that he had not heard of this issue. When in fact Freightliner had a recall on the flat panel units manufactured by Medallion Inc, that our Motorhome was not included based on the 2020 model year. We asked the Freightliner representative if the Dash flat panel could stop working which would present a safety issues while traveling down the highway. The Representative would not offer any guidance. He said we should check our fluid levels and in the event the Dash fails we should monitor our speed with a GPS. The representative indicated that we should contact a local Freightliner Service Center to determine what the replacement cost would be for a new Dash flat panel since we were out of warranty. We contacted our local Freightliner Service Center in Hattiesburg, MS. Freightliner part number 66-02439-000 They quoted the cost at $5133 + Installation A search on the Medallion Delamination issue is wide spread across Trucks and many different Motorhome manufacturers. When we first purchased our Motorhome in 2020 the Dash would blackout while traveling down the highway. Freightliner indicated that is was a firmware issue. Flashed the unit and issue has not repeated itself. This was 1 model year after the Medallion flat panel recall. While we understand that component failures can occur having your Dash fail while underway is not acceptable and a manufacturer who cannot answer whether it will eventually fail and will need to replaced.

The contact stated that the delamination was on the left side of the display screen and was moving across the display and was causing a bubble on the instrument cluster. The contact stated that some of the instrument gauges were blurred out due to the failure. The contact had not taken the RV to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The RV was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.

The contact owns a 2020 Tiffin Allegro Red attached to a 2020 Freightliner XC-M. The contact initially received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V921000 (Tires). The vehicle was taken to an RV dealer to be serviced under recall. Upon return of the motorhome, the contact discovered that the valve stem located on both the rear driver’s and passenger’s tires could not be accessed. The contact noted that the failure could lead to a failure since both rear tires could no longer be checked or inflated to monitor the tire pressure as needed. The manufacturer was notified about the issue and informed the contact that the recall repair was performed correctly; and offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had not experienced the failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

This is in reference to NHTSA #21V-921. We received a recall letter from Daimler Trucks indicating that an inner rear tire support grommet and valve extension needs to be removed due to the possibility that the support grommet will fall out resulting in the potential failure of the inner tire valve extension. Daimler issued a similar recall in 2020 which was related to the same issue but the remedy was to replace and or reinstall the grommet. In our case a service center installed the grommet and used RTV to hold it in place. The recall states that if the grommet is not removed the Owner takes on the liability for a failure. The issue with the removal of the extension and grommet make it impossible to use a cap based tire monitor sensor since the chassis was not equipped with internal tire sensors. This creates another safety issue in that the inner tires cannot be monitored. Daimler has not provided an option to have internal sensors installed along with a means to monitor the pressure.

TIRES; WHEELS

Tiffin Motorhomes was notified by Daimler Trucks North America on behalf of Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation of a defect that exists on specific model year 2017 - 2022 Freightliner Custom Chassis X-Line chassis manufactured February 20, 2017 through November 18, 2021 that are equipped with a valve stem extension and stabilizer configured with a specific tire valve stem and wheel combination. Tiffin Motorhomes built motorhomes on these specific Freightliner chassis between April, 2017 through December 6, 2021. Certain chassis may have been built with the tire valve stem extension for the inner wheel contacting the outer wheel rim opening, potentially damaging the valve stem resulting in a loss of air pressure in the inner tire. A loss of air pressure in the inner tire on a motorhome with a single drive axle may overload the outer tire and increase the risk of a crash.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
