2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia

On January 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE24003) to assess allegations of loss of motive power resulting from low-pressure fuel pump failures in certain MY 2017–2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles.  The subject vehicles are equipped with 2.0L 4-cylinder and 2.9L 6-cylinder turbocharged engines and manufactured by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC (FCA US).  Reports received by ODI alleged stall and loss of motive power at speeds above 25 mph, with several reporting that the condition resulted in permanent disablement of the vehicle.  Many reports described recurrence of the failure after an initial repair. During the investigation, ODI determined that the subject vehicles were equipped with fuel delivery pumps supplied by Vitesco Technologies Germany GmbH.  ODI also confirmed that MY 2018–2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles were equipped with the same pump.  ODI’s analysis identified an elevated failure rate associated with the original pumps installed in the subject vehicles.  The failure mode involves interruption of fuel flow, resulting in fuel starvation and an unexpected loss of motive power, typically with little to no advance warning. In responses to ODI Information Requests submitted in April and June 2024, FCA US reported 2,162 customer reports (complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 464 warranty claims related to the alleged defect.  Combined with ODI’s data, the investigation identified 1,900 unique VIN experiencing failures.  Review of the combined data confirmed one crash and no injuries, fatalities, or fires. On September 9, 2025, FCA US filed recall 25V-586, covering 29,467 MY 2017–2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles and 24,382 MY 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles, all equipped with the suspect Vitesco fuel delivery pump.  FCA US reported that the remedy is under development, with dealer notifications planned on or about September 16, 2025, and owner notifications scheduled to begin on or about October 29, 2025. The recall action initiated by FCA US addresses the alleged defect identified in this PE. Accordingly, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances, including an evaluation of the remedy once available. I own a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia that recently received a fuel-pump-related recall repair under FCA Recall 93C / NHTSA Campaign 25V-586 at an authorized Alfa Romeo dealership. Approximately three days after the recall repair was completed, I was driving the vehicle in active traffic with my daughter when the vehicle unexpectedly began decelerating and lost drive power. I had to shut the vehicle off, and afterward the vehicle would not restart. The vehicle had to be towed back to the Alfa Romeo dealership. The service advisor subsequently advised me that the current problem was related to the fuel system and that the fuel-related component was being replaced again. The vehicle remains at the dealership while the repair is being completed. This is also the second time this vehicle has completely shut down while I was driving. During a prior incident, the vehicle became disabled on a busy roadway and police responded and blocked traffic around the vehicle because of the danger posed by its location. I am concerned that the Recall 93C repair did not adequately remedy the fuel-system defect, that the replacement component failed, or that the recall repair was otherwise connected to the subsequent loss-of-drive-power event. I have repair records, towing documentation and video relating to the current repair and will retain the dealership's final diagnostic report when it becomes available.

My 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia lost motive power and was disabled multiple times the most recent on August 3, 2026 due to failure of the fuel delivery module — the same component and failure mode covered by Safety Recall 93C / NHTSA Campaign 25V-586. When I contacted the dealership, they confirmed the recall applied to my vehicle but advised that replacement parts were not available. No loaner or alternate transportation was offered. I was without my vehicle for 8 days and had to rent a vehicle at my own expense. FCA US filed this recall on September 9, 2025 stating that the remedy was still under development. Owners were left without a repair path for an extended period on a defect the manufacturer's own chronology shows it had been evaluating since 2023, and which had produced 437 complaints, 5 crashes, and 3 injuries by the time the defect was determined. Stellantis has twice declined to reimburse my transportation costs, citing that the visit was "recall work only" and that my factory warranty expired in 2021. My vehicle was not brought in for preventive recall service — it failed on the road because of the recalled part. I am reporting this so the delay between recall announcement and parts availability, and its cost to owners, is on the record for this campaign.

After driving my vehicle for about 40 min with the AC blower at full speed, the relay located in the trunk power distribution box melted, affecting sections of the female plug and wire ends. Right after the event, the blower stopped working and I found out many owners have reported this same issue. Upon inspection at the dealership, they recommended to replace the blower motor, power module (modern resistor) and for my surprise, the entire power distribution box and wire loom all the way to the BCM. They said wires and connections have been compromised by the excessive heat. At the dealership, the service department was convinced the root cause of the problem was the blower motor, normally those bearings tend to fail and consume more current but nothing beyond that was discussed. After exchanging with the dealership about part numbers, I realized that the AC blower part number for my car was superseded (68320172AA was replaced by 68353201AA) to eliminate that known problem. Stellantis introduced a superseded blower motor assembly with improved internal mechanics to prevent this excessive current draw. Interestingly, industry parts data shows the redesigned motor is not only more robust, but it is actually significantly cheaper to replace than the flawed 2017-2019 OEM units. Although Stellantis is aware of this flaw, there is no TSB or warranty coverage for this problem. Each 2017-2019 owner has to pay out of pocket for this expensive repairs or like in my case charge the Mopar service plan (thanks god I paid for it). I would ask the Agency to investigate the actual fire risk of this problem, I'm pretty sure there are many drivers out there completely unaware of this, running very hot relays. The fuse in the circuit won't work prior to the relays melting allowing wires to overheat. Others drivers have reported this in forums but most just change the relay only. My car is still at the dealership waiting on the power module (it has been there since June 15th)
