I just replaced the battery in my 2004 chevy Silverado 1500 with only 97,000 miles on it, and i went to drive it down the road and the vehicle now loses power and cuts off making a left turn.. It did this twice and i parked it.. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE in my opinion.. PLEASE investigate the issue and report back to me please..
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
I just replaced the battery in my 2004 chevy Silverado 1500 with only 97,000 miles on it, and i went to drive it down the road and the vehicle now loses power and cuts off making a left turn.. It did this twice and i parked it.. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE in my opinion.. PLEASE investigate the issue and report back to me please..
I STARTED TO NOTICE MY BRAKES AND STEERING COMPONENTS ARE VERY UNSAFE, MY STEERING WHEEL HAS TO MUCH PLAY, SOMETHING INSIDE THE STEERING MAKES A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WHEN I HIT A BUMP, THE BRAKES DON?T OPERATE CORRECTLY, THE TRUCK SHAKES AND MAKES THE STEERING VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES DUE TO THE SHAKING AND VIBRATION. I WAS TOLD IT MIGHT BE LEAKING HYDRAULIC FLUID. BUT TO SUM IT ALL UP TODAY ON 06-02-2020, I REALIZED THE TRUCK IS ONLY GETTING WORSE AND GETTING HARDER TO STEER AND THE BRAKES CAUSE THE STEERING TO MAKE IT EVEN HARDER TO DRIVE WITH ALL THE SHAKING AND PULLING TO THE SIDE AND ALSO I NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL BE REALLY HARD AT TIMES AND THEN REALLY LIGHT AT TIMES. *TR
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHILE DRIVING, ENGINE POWER DROPS IMMEDIATELY, NO POWER AT ALL. I GET A MESSAGE THAT SAYS ENGINE POWER FAILURE. I CAN STOP AND SHUT TRUCK OFF WAIT ABOUT 10-20 MINUTES, CRANK TRUCK, LIGHT GOES OUT AND ENGINE HAS POWER. THIS HAS HAPPENED 4 TIMES WITHIN THE LAST 2 MONTHS. TWICE THIS HAPPENED IN THE CITY LIMITS AND TWICE ON THE HIGHWAY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE BATTERY INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER WHEN HE OBSERVED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL HAD SEIZED AND TOOK GREAT EFFORT TO TURN. ALSO, THE BRAKES FAILED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP USING THE FIFTH WHEEL CAMPING TRAILER THAT WAS HITCHED WITH ELECTRONIC BRAKES TO SLOW AND EVENTUALLY STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN UNKNOWN DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SERPENTINE BELT AND IDLER PULLEY FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED OR MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 151,041.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Abs system is failing light comes on then brakes don’t catch, airbags message keeps coming on . Pulling in to store when it done it end up hitting the metal pipe in from of store to stop
Collided with a bear at 55mph with significant front end damage. Air bags were commanded to deploy and never did. I have contacted GM about the problem and have been told to wait for a claim advisor as no recalls are active on my vehicle.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
My dash Cluster quit working, the only part that works I can read my miles but I don't have the PRND321.
MY DASH STARTED OUT WITH A SMALL CRACK AND CONTINUED TO GET WORSE. NOW MY WHOLE DASH IS ABOUT TO FALL IN. WHEN IT FIRST HAPPENED AND TOLD CHEVY THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. VERY DISAPPOINTED SINCE I HAVE BEEN DRIVING CHEVROLET'S ALL MY LIFE. I THOUGHT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED.CRACKED WHILE DRIVING AND SITTING STILL. *TR
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Front Suspension repaired fixed but did not fixed the vibration in front tires. Front Driver Side Hub and Bearing Assembly Failed since I had truck(used). Had front end redone but wheel still vibrated and took it too dealership July 3, 2021 and stated the Hub and Bearing grinding and growling and activates abs lights. Fuel line needs replace due to rust problems and dealership stated that the pump and retaining cam are very rusted and has a spot on the pump that is wet but not soaking wet(fail dealership looking for lawsuit for fire hazard). Fuel lines are rusted so whole truck needs repair. I spent $5400 on used truck and putting more money into it with repairs due to rust, parts and labor which is stupid as some parts do not take long if dealership have tools. I don't know incident as there no accident or anything.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. DURING AN OIL CHANGE, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE FUEL LINE WAS RUSTED OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ROCKET CHEVROLET (567-275-0023, LOCATED AT 233 MANSFIELD AVE, SHELBY, OH 44875) WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL LINE WAS RUSTED OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CALLED, BUT NO ONE ANSWERED THE PHONE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 54,000. *BF

Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving the right front factory steel wheel rusted out to the point where the wheel center separated from the outer part of the rim on 4 of the 5 spokes, this caused a dangerous wobble to occur and if the vehicle wasn't being driven in the city I believe this would have resulted in a crash since the wheel was only being held on by 1 of the 5 spokes. Due to the design of these chrome clad wheels you can't see the corrosion that is occuring behind the chrome cladding. I put a spare tire on the vehicle and have since parked it until such time as I can replace all 4 of the wheels since I don't believe this vehicle is safe to be driven at this time. The chrome cladding was thrown off the right front wheel when this occured
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 800. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THERE WAS A WOBBLE AND AN ABNORMAL SOUND COMING FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE WHEEL HUB DETACHED FROM THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO THE RESIDENCE AND REPLACED THE WHEEL HUB AS NEEDED. THE CONTACT PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE WITH THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL HUB AND REPLACED THE WHEEL HUB AS NEEDED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO VALLEY CHEVROLET, 180 FLETCHER AVE, SPENCER, IN 47460, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 243,000. *DT*JB*DT CONSUMER STATED RETAINER RING FELL OUT AND STARTED TO MAKE GRINDING NOISE. AFTER THAT THE FRONT END DROPPED AND THE TIRE FELL OFF AS WELL AS BREAKING THE BRAKE LINE HOSE, STABLIZER BAR AND CALIPER BRACKET.*JB
I WAS DRIVING ON I-16 RUNNING ABOUT 65 MPH ALL OF A SUDDEN L HEAR SOMETHING LIKE A CANNON GOING OFF. MY TRUCK STARTED WEAVING IT TOOK ALL I HAD TO STAY IN CONTROL. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD LOOKING IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR SEEING A BIG TRANSFER TRUCK COMING MY WAY TRYING TO DODGE THE HUGE PIECE OF TIRE THAT CAME OFF MY TRUCK. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GET OUT BECAUSE OF THE TRAFFIC. THE BACK LEFT SIDE OF MY TRUCK WAS ALL CRUNCHED IN WHERE THE TIRE HAD BEATEN IT TO DEATH THANK THE GOOD LORD I WAS AHEAD OF THE TRAFFIC SO THEY HAD TIME TO SLOW DOWN. IT WAS A BFGOODRICH LT.287 75 R16 T/A K/O. I'VE BEEN DOING SOME RESEARCH AND FINDING OUT THIS IS HAPPENING A LOT WITH THIS TIRE WHY ON EARTH HAS BFGOODRICH NOT PUT A RECALL ON THIS TIRE BECAUSE OF THE COMPLETE TIRE SEPARATION. I AM DEATHLY AFRAID OF THE OTHER 3 TIRES ON MY TRUCK NOW. THESE TIRES ARE NOT CHEAP BY ANY MEANS. *TR
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
A MONTH OR TWO AGO THE HEATING SYSTEM STAYED BLOWING WHILE IN OFF POSITION AND EVEN WHILE THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF, KEPT KILLING THE BATTERY SO IT HAD TO BE DISCONNECTED. REAR WINDOW WILL ROLL DOWN AT START UP. RADIO WILL SQUEAL AT START UP AND HAD TO BE TURNED ON OR OFF FROM THE CENTER CONSOLE. THIS WEEK THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND CHECK TIRE. PERIODICALLY THE SERVICE STABILITY LIGHT WILL BLINK ON. TODAY THE WIPERS WILL NOT TURN OFF. VERY WORRIED THAT IT WILL ACCELERATE, CATCH FIRE OR SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. WE HAVE AN APT FOR REPAIR ON MONDAY. IS THE ELECTRICAL PANEL A CATEGORY INCLUDED INT HE RECALLS? *TR
I BOUGHT MY 2004 USED WITH 116,159 MILES ON IT. I NOTICED THE BLOWER MOTOR FOR THE A/C AND HEATER WOULD ACT UP ON ITS OWN AND THOUGHT IT WAS JUST THE AUTO CLIMATE CONTROL IT HAS. I SMELLED ELECTRICAL WIRING BURNING AT DIFFERENT TIMES BUT COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING BURNT IN THE WIRING AFTER INSPECTING THE WIRING UNDER THE DASH AND HOOD. ON FEB. 25,2014 I WENT TO THE GROCERY STORE AND WHEN I SHUT MY SUBURBAN OFF THE BLOWER MOTOR STAYED ON. I TRIED TURN THE KEY ON AND OFF BUT THE MOTOR STAYED ON. I WENT IN THE STORE AND WHEN I CAME OUT 1/2 HOUR LATER THE BLOWER MOTOR WAS STILL RUNNING. NOW EVERY TIME I TURN THE SUBURBAN OFF THE BLOWER KEEPS RUNNING SO I HAD TO PULL THE FUSE OUT SO IT WOULD NOT RUN THE BATTERY DOWN. I GOOGLED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL OTHER VEHICELS. AFTER FINDING OUT THE PART THAT IS DEFECTIVE IS CALLED A BLOWER RELAY RESISTOR MODULE I CALLED THE PARTS STORE TO GET THE PART. THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT GET THE PART AND TO TRY THE DEALERSHIP. THE CHEVROLET DEALER HAD THE PART AND I ASKED IF THERE HAPPENED TO BE A RECALL ON THE PART. THEY WANTED MY VIN. # SO THEY COULD CHECK MY SUBURBAN AND SAID THAT MY SUBURBAN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN 'THAT' RECALL. THAT SOUND ALITTLE WEIRD THE WAY HE SAID IT SO I GOT ON THE WEB AND CHECKED MYSELF. THERE IS A RECALL # 10240 THAT DESCRIBES THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS WITH OTHER 2004 SUBURBANS THAT IS HAPPENING WITH MY SUBURBAN TO THE "T". IT SAID IN THE RECALL THAT THE PROBLEM COULD CAUSE A FIRE. DOES SOMEONE NEED TO DIE BEFORE THE RECALL IS EXPANDED TO VEHICLES,THE SAME MAKE,MODEL AND YEAR IS INCLUDED!!!!!! *TR
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.

UPPER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINTS FAILED IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS
Front Suspension repaired fixed but did not fixed the vibration in front tires. Front Driver Side Hub and Bearing Assembly Failed since I had truck(used). Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE TRUCK, I NOTICED A WEEK LATER THAT THE DRIVER'S HEATED SEAT WOULD NOT STAY ON, WHILE DEPRESSING THE BUTTON. IT ILLUMINATED BUT WENT OFF AS SOON AS I RELEASED IT. CONSEQUENTLY, NO HEAT TO DRIVER'S SEAT. PASSENGER SEAT HEATED AND STILL HEATS PROPERLY. I NOTIFIED DEALER, BUT DID NOT DIGNOSE THE PROBLEM. BUT IT DID NOT BOTHER ME. I FIGURED IT MAY WORK LATER. NOT UNTIL JULY 2013 DID I NOTICE THE POWER SEAT MOTOR CONTINUED TO RUN WHEN I SHUT OFF ENGINE. SO I TAP THE LATCH ON THE SIDE OF THE SEAT TO LISTEN FOR MOTOR TO QUIT. I THOUGHT IT MAY BE RELATED TO MY 1ST PROBLEM WITH THE HEATED SEAT. I CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK DAILY, HAS 153000 MILES. PROBABLY ONE THE FINEST CHEVYS I HAVE OWNED. THANK YOU. *TR
DOOR LATCH/OPENER DOES NOT RETURN TO POSITION AND AS A RESULT DOOR WILL OPEN UNEXPECTEDLY. ALSO TAILGATE LATCH DOES NOT LATCH, TAKES NUMEROUS TIME BEFORE IT CATCHES WHEN TRYING TO CLOSE. *TR
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
1 ISSUE IS THE AC RUNS HOT ON THE LEFT SIDE AND COLD ON THE RIGHT. SOMETIMES IT WILL RUN ALL HOT.. @. THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS GO OFF AFTER I HAVE STARTED DRIVING AND I CAN NOT SEE THE SPEED OR ANYTHING ON IT. WE HAD A RECALL ON THE HARNESS A FEW YEAR AGO, AROUND APRIL 2011 OR 2012 THE TRUCK WOULD NOT PASS STATE INSPECTION AT THE TIME. I HAVE REPLACED IT TWICE ALREADY. CHEVROLET MANUFACTURE REIMBURSED US.
INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER AND LIGHTS, SPEEDOMETER ,FUEL,TEMP ....DO NOT WORK! VERY UNSAFE!
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH AND DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH, THE CLUTCH DROPPED TO THE FLOOR BOARD. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE INTO A PARKING LOT AND HAULED THE VEHICLE HOME WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT A NEW CLUTCH ASSEMBLY BE ORDERED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY WAS MANUFACTURER OUT OF PLASTIC AND NOT METAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
I WAS GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY ABOUT 50 MILES PER HOUR.HEARD A POP AND MY TRUCK WHEELS KIND OF LOCKED AND THEN ROLLED ON. I PULLED OVER AND GOT OUT AND LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND FOUND NOTHING. WENT ON TO MY LOCATION AND WHEN GETTING BACK IN MY TRUCK I HAD NO REVERSE. HAD I HAD AN 18 WHEELER BEHIND BE THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER. HAVE NOT PUT IT IN THE SHOP YET. 2004 CHEVY Z71 SILVERADO. *TR

Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
I HEAR CLUNKS IN THE MOTOR COMPARTMENT AND I FEEL THEM IN THE STEERING COLUMN
A FEW MONTHS AGO 2 OF THE SEAT BELTS ON THE MIDDLE ROW SEATS OF MY VEHICLE BECAME STUCK SO THEY ARE UNABLE TO BE PULLED OUT LONG ENOUGH TO REACH TO BE CLIPPED IN. AROUND 2010 SEVERAL OF THE GAUGE NEEDLES ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL OF MY 2004 CHEVY TAHOE STARTED TO STOP WORKING. FROM 2010 TILL 2015 I TRIED TO TAKE TO A DEALERSHIP 2 TIMES TO GET IT LOOK AT BUT BY THE TIME I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP IT WOULD START WORKING AGAIN SO I WAS ADVISE TO BRING IT IN WHEN IT WAS NOT WORKING. A COUPLE MONTHS AGO WHEN HAVING THE SAME ISSUE I DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO A LOCAL SHOP WHERE I HAVE PAID $300 TO TRY TO GET IT FIX, HOWEVER THE ELECTRICIAN FOUND A REPORT IN REGARDS TO MY CAR'S PROBLEM AND ADVISE ME TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP TO SEEK REPAIRS AT NO COST. I THEN TOOK IT TO RON TONKIN CHEVROLET ON 8/10/2015 LOCATED AT 122ND AVE AND WAS TOLD THAT NO RECALLS WERE FOUND FOR THIS ISSUE JUST A NOTICE AND ADVISED ME TO CONTACT GM TO SEEK COST ASSISTANCE. ON 8/11/2015 I CALLED GM AT (800)630-2438 AND TALKED TO A REP, THEN A SENIOR ADVISOR AND WAS TOLD THAT MY REQUEST WAS DENIED AND SO I REQUESTED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOVE THE SENIOR ADVISOR. I WAS TOLD THAT I WILL GET A CALL IN THE NEXT 24-48 HRS BUT SINCE I DIDN'T GET A CALL I CALLED THEM BACK ON 8/17/2014 AND WAS TOLD BY A SUPERVISOR THAT MY REQUEST IS DENIED BECAUSE THE SMART CARE COVERAGE ENDED IN 2011 AND I SHOULD HAD FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE NOTICE SENT TO VEHICLE OWNER BEFORE 2011 TO GET MY INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES AND SEAT BELTS REPAIR. I EXPLAINED THEM THAT I DID NOT RECEIVED THAT NOTICE BUT THEY CLAIMED THAT IT WAS SENT TO ME AND FOR THAT REASON NOTHING ELSE THEY CAN DO. I CONSIDER THAT THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY MATTER AND THAT GM SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE TO COVER THE COST FOR THE REPAIRS.
