Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

THERE ARE SEVERAL CRACKS IN THE DASH OF MY 2010 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN AS EXPLAINED BELOW. ONE OF THESE CRACK IS IN THE AREA OF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WHICH IS MOUNTED ON TOP OF THE DASH. AS THE DASH EXPANDS IN THE HEAT, TYPICALLY IN THE HOT MONTHS OF THE SUMMER, THE PLASTIC PORTION OF THE DASH WILL COVER THE AIRBAG PORTION OF THE DASH. I AM CONCERNED THAT IF I DO NOT NOTICE THIS AND THE VEHICLE IS INVOLVED IN A CRASH, THE AIRBAG WILL NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. I AM AFRAID VEHICLE OCCUPANTS MIGHT BE INJURED BY THE DASH IF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED UNDER THE PLASTIC PORTION OF THE DASH OR THAT THEY WILL BE INJURED IF THE AIRBAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY PROPERLY. THERE ARE ALSO TWO CRACKS IN THE DASH IN THE AREA OVER THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WHICH ALLOWS A PORTION OF THE DASH TO BE COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM THE MAIN DASHBOARD. THIS PORTION OF THE DASH THAT CAN BE REMOVED CAUSES A PROBLEM ON LONG TRIPS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WILL VIBRATE OUT OF PLACE. MY CONCERN WITH THIS PIECE IS ITS LOCATION IN RELATION TO THE STEERING WHEEL. I AM CONCERNED THAT IF THIS PIECE MOVES OUT OF PLACE, IT COULD MOVE INTO THE OPEN AREA AT THE TOP OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND INTERFERE WITH MY ABILITY TO CONTROL THE STEERING OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS ALSO INFORMED BY A LOCAL DEALERSHIP THAT MY AIRBAG OR AIRBAGS HAVE BEEN RECALLED. IN REGARDS TO BOTH OF THESE ISSUES, THE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED THAT GM IS AWARE OF BOTH PROBLEMS, BUT THAT THEY ARE STILL INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE RESOLUTIONS. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE DASH PROBLEMS? THIS HAS BEEN A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL YEARS THAT AFFECTS MANY VEHICLES, YET GM CLAIMS NOT TO KNOW WHAT CAUSED IT OR TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INFERIOR DASHES THAT WERE PLACED IN QUITE FEW YEAR MODELS OF THEIR VEHICLES. I FEEL THAT THIS BROKEN DASH IS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE.

DASHBOARD IS CRACKED FROM FRONT TO BACK RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER POSITION AS WELL AS AROUND THE AIRBAG RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PASSENGER POSITION. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN DEFECT. HAPPENS NO MATTER WHAT I AM DOING. WINDOWS HAVE REFLECTIVE TINT ON THEM AND A VISOR IS USED TO TRY AND KEEP HEAT DOWN INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE DASH CRACKED ANYWAY.

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE WINDSHIELD HAS UNEXPECTEDLY FOGGED UP WHILE DRIVING. THIS SEVERELY REDUCES VISIBILITY. THE WINDSHIELD TAKES SEVERAL MINUTES TO CLEAR WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS SET TO HIGH HEAT, HIGH FAN AND FULL DEFROST. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM ANYWHERE FROM 5 TO 45 MINUTES AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE. ON EVERY OCCASION IT HAS HAPPENED WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE DROPPED TO 34F AND THE AIR-CONDITIONING SHUT DOWN. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM ON OUR OTHER FLEET VEHICLES OF THE SAME MAKE MODEL AND YEAR. *LN

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

PIT3271Q

This preliminary information communicates information about how to determine if a wheel and tires size change is available.

PIP4902V

This preliminary information advises a dealer on how to email GDS2 session logs into Technical Assistance.

PIP6104

This Preliminary information communicates the steps on how to save a GDS2 Session Log and upload to a Technical Assistance Case in CX Connect.

PIT4506J

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician that some owners of Heavy Duty Trucks and Utilities may ask if they can lower their tire pressures. Tire pressures being set to the "Tire and Loading Label" will ensure the safe handling and ride characteristics of the truck and should not be lowered.

PIP4902U

This preliminary information advises a dealer on how to email GDS2 session logs into Technical Assistance.

PIT5214G

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have had multiple repair attempts that are being performed on customer’s vehicles that exhibit vibration conditions without utilizing the support of General Motors Technical Assistance Center. If valid vibration frequency or Road Force Variation data has been collected and a repair attempt does not correct the customer complaint, contact General Motors Technical Assistance Center for further support. For any vehicles that remains unrepaired after being at the dealer for three days or more and a related bulletin or PI is not found, contact General Motors Technical Assistance Center for further support.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
