Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY

Apr 25, 2022
592 units potentially affected
The defect: Gillig, LLC (Gillig) is recalling certain 2014-2021 Low Floor transit buses. The rear-mounted ultracapacitors may allow the engine to be started when the master battery disconnect switch is in the "OFF" position.
The risk: The engine may be started unexpectedly, increasing the risk of injury to anyone nearby the engine compartment during maintenance operations.
The remedy: Dealers will update the software for the buses equipped with the Vanner Ultracapacitor system, and conduct a hard rewire for the buses equipped with the KBI system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 22, 2022. Owners may contact Gillig's customer service at 1-510-264-5073 for 1-800-735-1500.

STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:PUMP

Jul 2, 2020
531 units potentially affected
The defect: Gillig, LLC. (Gillig) is recalling certain 2013-2020 hybrid and all-electric Low Floor buses equipped with a steering system that uses a high-voltage electric motor and hydraulic pump assembly to provide power steering assist. The shaft coupling between the motor and pump may fail and cause a loss of hydraulic power steering assist.
The risk: A loss of power steering assist may increase the risk of crash.
The remedy: Gillig will notify owners, and dealers will replace the motor-pump assemblies, free of charge. The recall began August 13, 2020. Owners may contact Gillig customer service at 1-800-735-1500.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Mar 25, 2020
8,224 units potentially affected
The defect: Gillig LLC (Gillig) is recalling certain 2012-2020 Low Floor buses. The circuit breaker ratings on the DEF Line Heater circuit and the Aftertreatment-Ignition circuit may be higher than the rating for the wire and connector.
The risk: With the improper circuit breaker rating, an electrical short in either of these circuits may increase the risk of a fire.
The remedy: Gillig will notify owners, and dealers will replace the circuit breakers, free of charge. The recall began April 24, 2020. Owners may contact Gillig customer service at 1-510-264-5073 or 1-800-735-1500.

Filed May 21, 2021

We have approximately 495 buses that we found out can be started even though the battery disconnect switch is in the "disconnected" position. It will start and run for several minutes until the super capacitor is drained. This is hazardous to maintenance personnel who disconnect the batteries to work on the vehicle, then someone else may start it while that other person is in a dangerous position in the engine compartment.

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

FS-2019-03

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

After a review of the fuse selection in some of your 2013 through 2015 Hybrid buses, Gillig determined that the fuses in the battery fuse box need to be changed.

FS-2019-02

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:HOSES/LINES/PIPING/FITTINGS

Because of a supply issue with the blue hose covering, Eaton is temporarily making FC-300 hose using black covering. FC-300 hose assemblies made between October 2018 to May 2019 will be affected by this change.

FS-2018-02

STEERING

A procedure to properly adjust the draglink so the socket won't over articulate, causing increased wear.

FS-2018-01

STEERING; STEERING:GEAR BOX (OTHER THAN RACK AND PINION)

It was found that an earlier Bulletin spec'd bolts that could be too long due to variances in bolt shoulder length, so this bulletin was written to make sure bolt attachments were correct.

FS-2017-05

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY

This field service bulletin is instructing vehicle owners and aftermarket part purchasers to remove the "Duck Bill" valves in the rear run box to prevent water intrapment, which can contribute to corrosion of some components. Owners are asked to permanently remove the duck bill valves from the rear run box in each bus (and units in parts inventory) per the included instructions.

Upgrade_Letter

STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

This field service bulletin informs vehicle owners and aftermarket part purchasers that Gillig will be sending them parts and service instructions to upgrade the electric power steering pump systems on certain BAE Hybrid Low Floor buses. The bulletin details how a new pump-motor "swing unit" will be provided so that fleets can iteratively upgrade one bus at a time by replacing and shipping the existing unit (and units in parts inventory) to an Eaton-authorized service center for upgrade.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
