Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
3
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

Crash reported3 injuries reported

WE WERE GIVEN A 1992 GMC JIMMY BY MY FATHER, AND ALONG WITH THE CAR CAME ALL THE CORRESPONDING PAPERWORK. INCLUDED IN THE PAPERWORK WAS A "SAFETY RECALL NOTICE" FROM GMC DATED MAY 2000, RECALL # G99041-S. THIS LETTER DESCRIBES AN ABS BRAKE FAILURE RESULTING IN ABNORMAL STOPPING DISTANCES AND THE REQUIRED REPAIRS. WHEN WE GOT THE CAR, I ASKED MY FATHER IF THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED AND HE STATED "THAT WHEN HE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP FOR AN APPOINTMENT THEY HAD NO RECORD OF THE RECALL SO THE REPAIR WAS NOT PERFORMED". SINCE WE'VE TAKEN OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE, WE'VE EXPERIENCED A BRAKE FAILURE AS DESCRIBED IN THIS LETTER AND WISH TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM THAT GMC HAS INDICATED. I'VE TRIED CALLING OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND HAVE RECEIVED THE SAME RESPONSE AS MY FATHER DID, "THERE'S NO RECALL WITH THAT NUMBER AND OUR VIN DOESN'T SHOW ANY RECALL NOTICES". I'VE ALSO CALLED GMC @ 1800-462-8782 AND SPOKE TO A TYHESSIA SMITH (1-866-542-4368 EXTENSION 45904, SERVICE REQUEST # 1-283317144), SHE ALSO HAS NO RECORD OF THE RECALL. HAVING THIS RECALL NOTICE ALONG WITH A BRAKE FAILURE SEEMS TO REQUIRE PROMPT ACTION FROM GMC, BUT IT SEEMS I'M GETTING LITTLE ASSISTANCE FROM THEM. *AK

THIS 1992 GMC JIMMY WAS GIVEN TO ME BY MY PARENTS MR AND MRS R E DEARRINGTON. FROM THE FIRST DAY THAT I RECIEVED IT AND WASHED IT FOR THE FIRST TIME THE BACK WINDOW WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER ENCLOSURE IS A PAIN IN THE BUTT. VERY ANNOYING, INDEED. WHEN IT RAINS OR THE VEHICLE IS WASHED THE ENCLOSER OF THE WIPERS HOLDS WATER AND THE MOMENT THADT YOU OPEN THE BACK WINDOW IT DUMPS THE WATER RIGHT INTO THE VEHICLE ONTO THE CARPET, AND IT STAYS WET UNTIL IT STINKS UP THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE WITH MILDEW ROT OR IT DRIES OUT, STILL LEAVING THAT MILDEW ORDER IN THE VEHICLE. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THEY HAD A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE AND HAD SOME WAY OF CORRECTING THE PROBLEM. SINCERELY, BOBBY L DEARRINGTON. *AK

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
