2019 Honda CR-V Body & structure Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the body or structure system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Body & structure reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

On Wednesday, [XXX], the sunroof glass of my 2019 Honda Cr-V Ex spontaneously exploded while driving on the highway. There was a startling loud sound that rendered me shocked while driving! It caused me to take my eyes off the road to look around my vehicle and in the rear-view mirror to see what had happened. Nothing hit the vehicle! Luckily, there were no other vehicles nor pedestrians nearby. I maintained staying in my lane, but I was completely distracted by the sound, this could have been dangerous! Also luckily, the interior sunroof shade was closed or I'd have been showered in broken glass. The service manager at the dealer I called, Greensboro Honda, said "I'm not going to lie, I have heard of this happening before". There are many reports of this happening online and, according to news station reports, an NHTSA investigation that was closed in 2021 citing that it “has not identified sufficient evidence of a safety-related defect in the subject sunroof.” On the same day the incident occurred, my vehicle was inspected by the Service employees of Honda of Greensboro, NC. They refused to fix the problem b/c the 'Area Manager", against the recommendation of the 'Service Manager', stated that "something must have hit the vehicle". I repeatedly insisted that nothing hit the vehicle. I have filed a claim with Nationwide Insurance. Greensboro of Honda did take photos and they taped the hole in the sunroof at no charge which was kind yet suspicious since I bought this 'Certified Pre-owned" vehicle at Leith Honda of Aberdeen. The Greensboro Honda dealership is not owned by Leith. Twice, once by phone message and once via email, I requested the email, denying the issue be fixed by Honda, between the 'Service Manager' and the 'Area Manager' at Greensboro Honda be forwarded to me, to no avail. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. Note: the shape of the fractured glass hole look almost identical to others. The paint under the rear hatch at the top where the roof meets the rear is gone and rust is already coming thru. I have reached out to Honda Corporation of America as well as Hendrick Honda in Concord, NC where I purchased the vehicle, however both have refused to help me. I leased the vehicle new and purchased it last April as a certified pre owned. It has a 5 year rust warranty as well as 1 year added to the new car warranty when I purchased it.

The paint under the rear tailgate at the top is gone and surface rust has already started to come thru. Honda has had issues with several models of CRV’s with different model years resulting in recalls. This model is having the same issue. The owners manual does show a 5 year warranty no mileage for surface rust if it is a “ lack of craftsmanship “ but Honda is not wanting to stand behind this. I leased this vehicle new and bought it last year as a “certified pre owned “ which was supposed to start the new vehicle warranty over. Vehicle has never been in an accident. I know of at least one other person at my workplace with the same issue with his CRV.

I've raised two tickets with ticket numbers 13709173 and 13719701to Honda customer care, the issue is a rust spot on the trunk, there has been no external damage on the trunk and the issues seems to have originated from under the panel. I have been receiving no support from the Honda customer care team and the dealership the dealership was interested in knowing that if I bought this vehicle from them which I did not because I bought this vehicle from Pennsylvania and I moved cross country last year. I took the vehicle to the workshop and the service advisor was too keen on proving me wrong that this is an external damage to which I proved to him that it is not. Honda corporate customer care is also making excuses citing that I am the second owner, which I am not I'm raising this concern on behalf of my wife who is the first owner of this vehicle. Honda restaurant warranty clearly states that if the rust Originates from under the paint it is going to be covered under the rust and corrosion warranty. I'll attach some pictures here and NHTSA be the judge of if this resp what is caused by external damage or the rust originated from within?

The summer of 2021 my back windshield broke spontaneously reasons unknown. I had the window replaced shortly after, but I have noticed an odd unaligned shift in my back end lift gate/hitch. My hitch loses a tad off and there is a bigger gap difference between the driver side and the passenger side. My vehicle has not been in an incident that would cause this issue.

The contact owns 2019 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while she was driving 75 MPH, she heard a noise coming from under the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. As she continued to drive, she heard a metal plate hitting the freeway and dragging. The contact stated she was able to pull over into the emergency lane and was able to get help with securing the skid plates with a wire. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed her that the skid plates were damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that while she was driving 65 MPH, she heard the sound of the metal plate hitting the roadway underneath the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the skid plates needed to be removed and that the clamps were loosened. Additionally, there was damage to the flash guard. The contact stated that the vehicle was not repaired due to the parts not being available. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,500.

My 2019 Honda CR-V just had it's rear glass exploded all of a sudden. It was a 85F degree day and condition seemed normal and nothing out of the ordinary. The rear window left and right sides had a huge fault crack all along the edges. The middle of the windshield popped a hole and then upon lifting the trunk because I was unaware of the glass, the hole increased in size and chunks of glass just rained everywhere. Honda claims an object struck the glass, but that would mean the main damage would concentrate around that area. Judging from the damage to the left and right edges, it would indicate the glass internally failed all together.

The passenger and driver doors do not line up to the body of the vehicle which is causing the paint to chip when the doors are opened and closed. The weather seals on the doors are rolling as a result.
