2019 Honda CR-V Steering Problems

I an experiencing "sticky steering" notably at freeway speeds on warmer days. The steering wheel will catch when I attempt lane corrections and suddenly release with a small clunk causing the vehicle to lurch in the direction of the steer. I see that 2022-2024 Honda CRVs are covered under a recall for "sticky steering" but not the 2018-2021 model years even though there is the same problem as evidenced by numerous complaints on the Honda forum. Can Honda be persuaded to include these earlier model CRVs experiencing the same problem? Luckily I have an Honda Motor Company extended warranty which I hope will cover the cost of repairs as this is an unsafe situation, especially for my petite wife.

The steering on my 2019 Honda CRV is sticking at highway speeds. When making micro corrections to stay in my lane I experienced resistance or sticking of the steering wheel causing me to use a slight force to overpower the wheel, which then causes jerking of the wheel and vehicle. This could cause an increase in the likelihood of a crash and causing injury. This started happening in XXX and XXX while traveling from [XXX] to [XXX] and back, for a total of 3000 miles. There were no warning lights. The car only has 52,600 miles on it. My car is at the Honda dealership in [XXX] today, XXX. They are trying to replicate the issue. There is a recall on the 2023-2025 Honda CRV for this issue, but not for the 2019, although this same problem has been and is being reported across other years. When turning left, steering fails to correct to neutral, resulting in the driver having to force the vehicle to the right to maintain a straight path. Steering wheel sticks. Honda dealership confirmed the issue and problem needed steering gearbox replacement. Issue is related to recalls in other SAME MODEL vehicles, however was not the SAME YEAR.

Although my vehicle is a 2019 model year and technically excluded from the current 2022–2025 recall scope, it is experiencing the identical manufacturing flaw involving excessive internal friction within the electronic power steering gearbox assembly.

I Have notchy and sticky steering situation with this vehicle since approximately 60000 miles, vehicle has now approximately 96000 miles.The vehicle will almost over correct in a curve on interstate, almost feels like steering is stuck and you -must add to much pressure to turn it. I have been to dealership and they say I need a new steering rack. Honda doesn’t have a recall on this year model (2019) like other models. The dealership told me to file a complaint with the NHTSA. They said Honda is very , very , very aware of the issues with this model. Because his dealership has had several 2019 CRV s with this same issue and Honda has refused to recall it. Dealership said if enough people would contact NHTSA then Honda may do something. But right now I will have to pay the $4700 to fix it.

"sticky steering" - After turning the steering wheel a few degrees to the left, there is some resistance when turning it back to the center. It happens mostly at highway speeds, and happens more in hot weather. The safety issue is that it makes it harder to keep a straight course on the highway because the small adjustments a driver normally makes are more difficult. And, when overcoming resistance to turn the wheel back to center, it is easy to overcorrect and turn the wheel too far to the right.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and attempting to make a left or right turn, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver, with an abnormal clicking sound coming from the steering wheel. No warning light was illuminated. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed; however, the result was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. 2019 Honda CR-V, 74,429 miles. Steering wheel exhibits stickiness/notchiness when turning or making slight corrections and does not return to center on its own. Matches other CR-V owner reports of "sticky steering," the subject of an NHTSA investigation/recall on related model years and Honda/Acura platforms sharing the same EPS rack/gearbox. COMPONENT: Electric power steering (EPS) rack/steering column is suspected. Vehicle is in my possession and available for inspection upon request. RISK: Steering failing to self-center, plus intermittent stickiness during turns/corrections, risks needing sudden extra force to move the wheel, which could cause overcorrection and loss of control, especially at highway speed or during lane changes. DEALER CONFIRMATION: Honda Lisle, ILtest drove the vehicle on 7/22/26 and verbally confirmed notchiness. He later left a voicemail stating the only fix is full power steering rack replacement, verbally quoted at $5,500. Nothing was documented in writing on the repair order; no diagnostic findings or formal quote provided despite my request. OTHER INSPECTIONS: Vehicle was at Honda Lisle, IL on 7/22/26 for an unrelated grille-shutter code that set off all of the dash lights. No inspection by police, insurance, or other parties. WARNING LAMPS/MESSAGES: None. No dashboard warnings appeared. Symptom noticed during normal driving.

While driving, most noticeable at highway speeds and after 30 or more minutes, especially during hot temperatures, the steering wheel experiences sudden momentary binding,sticking, or catching when making small lane corrections. It requires a distinct, manual force to break the wheel free from this sticky point. This resistance frequently results in an abrupt over correction, causing the vehicle to jerk within the lane. This frightening unpredictable behavior creates an immediate, severe safety hazard for myself and other drivers on the road. This is a constant daily driving issue and would appreciate a investigation into this and be assigned a registered complaint reference number. The steering gearbox failed. Once we have the car fixed we will be able to submit the part if needed. Yes, our safety and the safety of others was very much at risk. We were told the steering could have binded at any moment, leaving the wheel completely stuck in place. This would likely have resulted in a very serious crash. Yes, the vehicle had a diagnostic ran at a Honda dealership. There were no warning lights at all.

The steering started glitching in December 2025. The steering became increasingly difficult and did not respond normally, causing concern that I could lose the ability to control the vehicle. Because steering is essential to maintaining control of a vehicle, I believe this failure created a serious risk of a crash, injury or death. The problem has been inspected and confirmed by Walsh Honda in Macon, Georgia. There were not warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem before December 2025. My car is still at Walsh Honda awaiting repair. The costs is $5,195. The car only has 43,000 miles on it.

I am submitting this complaint regarding a steering system defect on my 2019 Honda CR-V, which currently has fewer than 55,000 miles. Over the past few weeks, I have been experiencing a grinding/creaking noise when turning the steering wheel, particularly during low-speed right turns and when the steering wheel is turned while reversing. The noise also occurs occasionally steering forward and has become progressively louder and more frequent. In addition to the noise, the steering wheel intermittently catches or sticks while driving straight and then making a slight steering correction and also when turning in a fixed position. When this occurs, the steering wheel requires noticeably more force than normal to move, especially to the right. This creates inconsistent steering feel and raises concerns about vehicle control and safety. I had the vehicle inspected by my mechanic, who diagnosed the issue as a defective steering rack worm gear. Based on this diagnosis, the recommended repair is replacement of the complete steering rack assembly. Given the relatively low mileage of this vehicle and the potential safety implications of intermittent steering binding, I believe this represents a defect in the steering system that should be investigated.

2019 Honda CRV steering problem -- steering binding at highway speeds; ratcheting feeling. Possibly worm gear spring defect. I must constantly tug at my steering wheel to keep the SUV in my lane at speeds over 50 mph. I've mentioned this to my dealer two times now and they don't seem to know about the problem. There is a recall for this on other Honda models -- why hasn't a recall been announced for the 2019 CRV???

The highly documented sticky steering issue has caused multiple dangerous issues of steering overcorrection on 2 lane highways in rural Arkansas and Missouri where I live. Seems worse on returning to straight ahead from a slight left curve. It makes my very nervous to drive and the dealer ignored it for years saying it was probably a knocked loose sensor. Estimated cost of out of warranty repair for the some issue the latest models have a recall on is about $5000. I cannot afford this and makes me tend to drive this vehicle in a dangerous condition.

The steering sticks, i.e. binds, when centered and requires excessive force to move it off center. The force/movement required to "unstick" the steering could inadvertently cause a lane or possibly a roadway departure as well as a crash into another vehicle. This issue, and its cause, have been diagnosed by Honda of San Marcos (Texas): "Verified concern, found internal failure in the power steering rack, Technician found power steering gear binding when turning" by technician Keith Arche.

When driving my 2019 Honda CRV it is very difficult to drive at speeds 55 or higher. The steering frequently becomes stiff, jerky and notching feeling requiring both hands be on the steering wheel at all times. It is exhausing and feels unsafe. It will not stay straight. You have to constantly attempt to pull it back in your lane. I have turned off lane assist and it still does it. Other Honda CRVs are included in a recall for this issue but mine is not. It causes severe driver anxiety and fatigue. Passengers even question my driving but when we trade places they see how frustrating it is. Something is definitely not right. The mechanical failure I am experiencing is the same as the 2023-2025 recall. I called the Honda dealership where I bought my vehicle and other Honda dealerships and they confirmed my vehicle is not currently included in the recall.

I'm concern with the possible safety issue while driving my 2019 CRV on the expressway at 60 mph. The steering has a sticking moment when trying to adjust the wheel back to straight alignment. I'm not sure if this is going to continue or can this get more serious. in my research, I noticed that there is a recall for this issue on other year models but not 2019. I find that interesting. Shouldn't Honda be responsible for this safety issue on all CRVs. Are other 2019 CRV owners having this issue. I'm taking my CRV into the dealer on Thursday 6/18 to address this issue.

Vehicle (31,000 miles) exhibits sticky steering or notchy steering near the straight-ahead position. At highway speeds, the steering wheel resists small steering corrections and then breaks free, causing overcorrection. The condition requires constant micro-corrections to maintain lane position. I first noticed the problem around 10,000 miles. I turned off the LKAS system off. It appears to be getting worse. I called the Honda of Ft Myers dealer service dept (Adrian) and he informed there was a recall on this issue in later models that did not include my year. His only advice was to bring it in. Tires are new, properly inflated, and vehicle has recently been aligned. The symptom appears to originate within the electric power steering system. Vehicle is available for inspection. Safety will be at risk if issue continues to worsen. No warning lamps. Thank You

Since the first day of owing this 2019 CR V, the steering wheel did not smoothly turn. It would turn in small increments, somewhat jerking. As the years have gone by, the situation is worsened. I am afraid we will be in an accident along the highway. Today, I decided to check on what might be the cause, thinking something simple such as hydraulic fluid. Oh my gosh! I found 122 NHTSA complaints of exactly the same problem. And not only that! This EXACT situation was the subject of a recall of earlier versions of the same model. This is not my first rodeo with this specific car. Honda AND NHTSA should both be concerned about the safefy of its customers. Brake systems and steering systems ought to top the list for recall considerations. What is the correct number of complaints to cause a recall? How many of those affected actually file a complaint? I suspect a very small number. Do people have to first be in an accident or be killed as a result of the problems identified by both the customers and their mechanics and dealerships?
