Safety investigations
NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
No Restart After Auto Start/Stop Engages
On June 3, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE22005 after the agency received VOQs and several field reports concerning the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On January 6, 2023, Honda released service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. These service bulletins address the failure to restart issue in the 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles, as well as the 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The repair outlined in the service bulletins is a two-stage countermeasure to remedy the issue. The first stage is a Programmed Fuel Injection (“PGM-FI”) software update. The second stage is only deployed if the software update fails to remedy the issue. The second stage, depending on the model and model year, consists of replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment. Additionally, Honda extended the warranty coverage to 10 years with unlimited mileage for vehicles requiring the second stage component replacement. ODI continues to receive complaints of the AIS failure to restart, with many complainants alleging the campaign countermeasures had been completed.NHTSA has reviewed Honda's Information Request Letter responses involving warranty claims, lawsuits, and consumer complaints in addition to ODI's own data. This Engineering Analysis is being opened to further consider the potential safety defect, including gathering additional data regarding Honda’s service campaign efficacy. ODI is additionally expanding the scope to encompass all vehicles addressed in Honda’s service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009 as well as newer model year vehicles, which are substantially similar to the vehicles covered by the service campaign. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
Rear-View Camera Failure
On February 13, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24004 to assess alleged failures of the rear-view camera (RVC) in 2020-2023 Model Year (MY) Honda Ridgeline vehicles. At this time, ODI has received a total of 50 complaints with allegations of the RVC image failing to display when the vehicle was in reverse. The RVC wire harness is routed near the hinge in the tailgate, in a location where frequent opening and closing of the tailgate causes bending stress on the harness. Honda determined the wire harness was manufactured with a material which is permeable to water and salt, which when it freezes and thaws, combined with tailgate usage, ultimately leads to breakage of the wiring in the tailgate harness. This results in a failure to display the RVC image. On May 9, 2024, Honda filed a Part 573 Safety Recall Report recalling all 2020-2024 MY Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The dealer will replace the RVC tailgate harness with a wire harness that is manufactured by a new supplier and has improved material properties to withstand wear from bending. In view of Honda filing recall 24V-321 addressing the subject of this investigation, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Car failed to restart engine after auto stop/start, battery is fairly new and was replaced because a few incidents like this and assumed it was a faulty battery. It becomes a very dangerous situation when trying to join traffic while exiting a parking lot or when stopped at a traffic light and the car does nor restart. It has to be placed in park, turned off, open a door, close it and then press the ignition button to start again.

just got on the freeway when car lost power, slowed down, check engine light turns on, and more lights start flashing. Potentially could have caused an accident if I was going faster on road. Went to mechanic, Code P0301, after diagnosis, fuel injectors failing. Mechanic was able to reproduce incident. Similar to recall for previous models, but not recalled on 2022 model. Need to replace fuel injectors. Had minor loss of power a few days prior, but not as severe

The windshield camera for the cruise control malfunctioned. Excessive warning lights is a distraction. Not using cruise control on long trips is stressful. Seems like a common problem on these vehicles.

I took the truck to Dover Hona Dealer down here in [XXX]. They said 'they tested battery, ("battery is testing okay") scanned trouble codes found none, test drove 3 times, started 20 times next morning and it seemed to start every time with no issues'" could not find anything wrong. They wrote , " No repair for the time being - customer to monitor for the being" But the truck got stalled again on XXX at [XXX] and [XXX] cross-section in [XXX]. I will be taking the truck to Stratham Honda Dealer in [XXX] this Friday for another check-up. Every time , the truck stalled all warning lights were lit on the dashboard. I brake was stiff. It went black when pressing P button. And it a couple seconds it started and ran just fine. I have now begun to disengage the auto-idle-stop. It's runnig good. Part 573 Safety Recall Report for the Seat Weight Sensor recall for Honda includes 2017-2021 and certain cars in 2023. Mine Ridgeline is a 2022. My curtain airbags on the drivers side spontaneously deployed while I was driving along a 4-lane highway. I was stunned, but I was able to pull of the road safely, but I am bruised on my shoulder, hip, and thigh due to the impact of the airbags. The 2022 Ridgelines should have been included in the recall. Honda has so far not taken responsibility for the air bag deployment. Because an actual accident did not occur, but a 'mechanical failure', my insurance agency has refused to file and pay for the damage.

Manufacturer communications
A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Service Bulletin - The wireless charger starts charging the phone and then stops charging, even when the phone remains in the correct position on the charger due to software specifications that can cause some phones to have issues charging.
STRUCTURE:BODY
Service Bulletin - One or more accessory running board lights are flickering or not working due to a faulty running board light assembly.
STRUCTURE:BODY
Service Bulletin - The AWD warning light is on potentially due to water intrusion into the rear differential pump motor connector area that corrodes the terminals.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Service Bulletin - The wireless charger starts charging the phone and then stops charging, even when the phone remains in the correct position on the charger.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Service Bulletin - The wireless charger starts charging the phone and then stops charging, even when the phone remains in the correct position on the charger.
ENGINE
Service Bulletin - MIL flashes and vehicle will not accelerate, low power. After cycling the ignition, the symptom does not return with no stored DTCs. This issue is more common in regions with cold weather (specifically near or below freezing temperatures). Usually after a long drive (around 2 hours) and accelerating while cornering.
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
