Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

The defect: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Entourage vehicles manufactured February 16, 2006, to June 30, 2008. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may corrode and bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.
The risk: If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
The remedy: Hyundai will notify all of the owners. For vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia, dealers will replace the secondary latch. The contact's cousin owns a 2008 Hyundai Entourage. The contact stated that while driving 60-65 MPH at nighttime under snowy and icy conditions, the hood flew open and struck and shattered the windshield. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road, and the hood was closed but failed to latch securely. The vehicle was driven to the residence, where the contact became aware that the hood pistons were bent, and other unknown hood assembly parts were damaged. Additionally, the owner informed the contact that prior to the failure, the hood needed to be closed with excessive force to latch securely. The vehicle was taken to Safelite Auto Glass, where the windshield was replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V843000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages). The dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

I had an appointment at the dealer for the recall only. Upon completion of scheduled appointment, I assumed the vehicle recall had been rectified. After my vehicle was at the dealership for several hours, the dealer did not complete the recall. The mechanic said the part was on backorder. They would contact me once it was in stock and available for installation. That was March 12, 2022 at Boch Hyundai in Norwood, Massachusetts. I WAS TAKING MY FAMILY FOR SHOPPING, AND AFTER MY KIDS (5 KIDS) WERE SEATED IN THE CAR AND MAKING SURE THE SEAT BELTS WAS WORN. I WALKED TO THE DRIVER DOOR TO START THE CAR AND DRIVE TO THE DESTINATION; A THICK WHITE SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF UNDERNEATH THE ENGINE HOOD EVEN THOUGH THE CAR'S ENGINE WAS STILL OFF! I WAS SHOCKED AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO FIRST! SHOULD I SAFE MY FAMILY AND HELP THE KIDS TO RUN OUT OF THE CAR OR CHECK THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE! SINCE I AM AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH CARS, I KNEW THE PROBLEM WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND IF I UNPLUG THE BATTERY THIS SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM FASTER! WITH A LOT OF SMOKE, I WAS ABLE TO UNPLUG THE CABLES OF THE BATTERY. THEN, I DID HELP MY KIDS TO GET OUT OF THE VAN' THEY WERE VERY SCARED AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO HELP! I CHECKED ON THE CAR AND I DID FIND THE SMOKE WAS LESS AND AFTER COUPLE MINUTES STOPPED COMPLETELY. SITUATION COULD BE WORSE THAN THAT, THE VAN WAS FULL OF GAS PARKED IN MIDDLE OF OTHER 4 CARS, 15 FT FROM OUR HOMES. I DID SEE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (ABS) MODULE WAS BURNED-OUT! I DID ORDER A USED ABS MODULE FROM EBAY (SEE ATTACHED FILE) AND REPLACED THE OLD ONE. UNFORTUNATELY, IT DID NOT WORK! MANY LIGHTS IN THE DASHBOARD APPEARED (BREAK, ABS, ENGINE) AND LOST SOME FUNCTIONS OF THE DRIVING LIKE CRUISE AND SMOOTH ENGINE SOUND! AFTER VISITING MANY LOCAL REPAIRERS, I DID CALL THE LOCAL DEALER AND ASKED FOR NEW MODULE AND GOT QUOTE ON NEW ABS MODULE (PART ONLY COSTS ABOUT $2500). AFTER ABOUT A MONTH FROM THE ACCIDENT DAY, I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM HYUNDAI COMPANY IN USA WITH TWO RECALLS IN WHICH ONE OF THEM SAID ABS MODULE MAY SHORT CIRCUIT AN ELECTRICAL SHORT WITHIN THE ABS MODULE MAY CAUSE AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE, EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF, INCREASING THE RISK OF AN INJURY. CONTACTED THE COMPANY BUT THEY DID NOT SOLVE MY PROBLEMS.

DTN DL

AIR BAGS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the presence of substandard and dangerous driver’s-side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN). These inflators were not supplied, approved, or authorized by the vehicle manufacturers and have primarily been found in vehicles that previously experienced a crash and underwent airbag replacement using non-genuine parts. These dangerous inflators have ruptured during deployment, posing a serious risk of injury or death due to metal fragments entering the vehicle cabin. To date, Hyundai is aware of three people who have died while driving a Hyundai vehicle with one of these substandard replacement airbag inflators that deployed in what likely would have been a survivable crash. NHTSA has issued a public advisory urging vehicle owners and service professionals to have vehicles inspected if there is reason to believe that a non-genuine replacement airbag may have been installed. Vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles, prior airbag deployments, or unknown repair histories may present a higher risk. NHTSA strongly cautions against self-inspection by vehicle owners and recommends inspection by trained technicians.

DTN DCS

AIR BAGS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an urgent safety advisory regarding dangerous, counterfeit driver‑side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN), that have been identified in U.S. vehicles following prior crashes, theft, or non‑certified airbag replacements. These inflators are not approved for use, may rupture during deployment, and have caused serious injuries and fatalities. Please see attached announcement, provided by NHTSA, for more details.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

This bulletin provides information regarding condensation related to the accumulated moisture in the headlamp, rear combination lamp, daytime running lamp (DRL), or fog lamp. This TSB illustrates the various causes of condensation inside the lamp assembly. Lamp assembly replacement is NOT necessary in most cases. This condition can be eliminated by turning on the lamps with the engine running for several minutes or during normal driving operation.

24-BD-001H

VISIBILITY; VISIBILITY/WIPER

This bulletin contains information about the proper removal of the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all models. If the protective cover is not removed correctly, there is a possibility of the rubber insert and rail spring becoming partially separated on the inner side of the wiper blade, which could lead to poor wiping performance and/or possible scratching of the windshield glass. Follow the procedure in this bulletin to properly remove the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all new wiper blades.

23-EM-005H

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

This bulletin provides important checkpoint guidelines when performing engine oil and filter change services.

STRUCTURE:BODY

Hyundai applies a Paint Protection Film (PPF) on new vehicles before delivery to dealerships. It provides a barrier between the paint and contaminants, such as rail dust, acid rain, and industrial fallout. In rare cases, the paint can become clouded under the PPF. These spots are the result of moisture trapped between the PPF and the paint.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
