Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL

Apr 20, 2005
659 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARMS WERE INCORRECTLY ASSEMBLED BY THE SUPPLIER. THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE BRAKE PEDAL MAY BE REDUCED. THIS CONDITION CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF BOTH PEDALS BEING OPERATED AT THE SAME TIME BY THE DRIVER.
The risk: THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL COULD BE HELD DOWN BY THE PEDAL STOP ASSEMBLY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY AND REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 11, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT JAGUAR AT 1-800-452-4827.

ON 12/05 I LEASED A 2006 JAGUAR XK8 CONVERTIBLE FROM MADISON NJ AND HAD IT FLAT BEDDED TO MIAMI. WHEN I 1ST DROVE IT I HEARD A TICK TICK NOISE UPON ACCELERATION . CALLED MADISON AND WAS TOLD TO TAKE IT TO A MIAMI JAG DEALER. TOOK IT TO WARREN HENRY JAG . SVCE MANAGER. SAID HE DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING. HAD MAN DRIVE AROUND WITH ME. THEY STILL DENIED HEARING NOISE. THEY PUT IT UP ON A LIFT. COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. I CALLED JAGUAR AMERICA AND THEY CALLED WARREN HENRY- I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY TOLD ME THAT MY CAR NEEDED A WHOLE NEW ENGINE. I CALLED MADISON AND JAG AND TOLD THEM I DIDN'T WANT A REBUILT CAR I WANTED A NEW CAR . THEY ALL DECIDED I SHOULD LET THEM REPLACE THE MOTOR. AFTER THEY DID APPROX 2 WKS AGO (WARREN HENRY) THEY RETURNED IT AND LEFT THE WORK ORDER IN IT. WORK ORDER STATES THAT JAGUAR SENT THE WRONG ENGINE SO MECHANIC ASKED WHAT TO DO. HE WAS TOLD TO STRIP MY OLD ENGINE AND TAKE PARTS OFF NEW AND REBUILD. IT STATES THAT HE DRAINED THE OIL AND "IT WAS BLACK LIKE A 5000 MILE CHANGE HADN'T BEEN DONE". MY CAR IS NEW ---IT ONLY HAD 1000 MILES . THERE WERE ENGINE PARTS LEFT IN THE TRUNK AND THE TRUNK IS ALL RIPPED APART AND THE ENGINE COVER IS MISSING THE BATTERY COVER ISN'T THERE- ITS A WRECK AND IS ALSO SCRATCHED ALL OVER. NOW MADISON SAYS THEY WILL PICK IT UP NEXT WEEK BUT THEY DON'T TELL ME WHAT THEY WILL DO. I'M STILL PAYING THE LEASE PAYMENTS AND I'M SCARED TO EVEN DRIVE THE CAR. PLEASE HELP ME. *JB

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
