2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

My vehicle in the last 2 days has randomly shutoff completely while driving on the highway. I was able to place in neutral, then restart the vehicle thank goodness without being rear-ended or a collision. The vehicle has been repaired before (NHTSA Campaign ID: 19V813000) and (Chrysler's recall number V62). The vehicle at this point I fear is too dangerous to drive. I am going to have the car towed to the dealership in hopes of reinstalling the fuel pump relay hack. There are many of the same complaints online from other drivers with the same vehicle. Something else needs to be done about this soon before someone gets killed.

There was a recall on my car for the brake booster water shield, water could get into the brake booster and cause corrosion and can cause the brakes to stop working. The recall was "fixed" about a month ago, but the brake booster still failed - my best guess is because water already got inside of the booster and already caused corrosion. My brakes began to fail while driving on the highway. When the brake booster blew out it also caused so much pressure that it blew out the master cylinder. The master cylinder is not part of the recall - according to JEEP No damage caused by the recall of the brake booster is under the recall and warranty EXCEPT the brake booster. The supposed fix itself here is faulty. This could have had a way worse outcome if I could not get my car to a stop. The other part of this is that the piece to fix this is on national back order with no estimated ship date.

SUV stalls when coming to a stop while making a right turn or while stopping at a light. Power steering and brakes quit working. There are no diagnostic codes thrown for the dealer to check into. This occurs at least three to four times a week. I only commute 4 miles a day. Fortunately everytime this occurs I have been able to come to a stop and no other cars have been near. But if a car was on the street I am turning onto I would have hit their car. The dealer has replaced a few things that could possibly be wrong but the issue does not give diagnostic code to investigate. This is a known issue with Chrysler for this year model and several other years but my Jeep Grand cherokee has no recalls for it.

Wife was driving car off the highway, around a rightward curving offramp, and she noticed that the steering was handling differently, as if the power steering was off, and the brakes were not responding normally either. She could not stop the car where she intended to and was lucky that there was not cross traffic in the immediate intersection. No lights on the dash were lit up. She turned the car off and on again, and the steering and braking was normal again. We brought it to a trusted independent mechanic and described the issue, and they could not reproduce the issue but looked it up and found multiple reports of this occurring with 2010s Grand Cherokees. They were very concerned about the safety of the car and recommended bringing it to a dealer. One local dealer wanted $1000 to begin diagnosing. The other dealer charged $250 to look around but could not find anything that would explain loss of steering and brakes. We do not feel safe driving the car, as we live in a busy urban setting and any loss of control of the car would likely mean injuring or killing one of our neighbors.

The vehicle randomly stalls without warning while driving, causing the power steering and brakes to fail. It occurs randomly every 7-14 days, usually when it's first driven for the day and usually within the first 5-10 miles when slowing down to make a turn. Occasionally it will occur at a stop sign and a few times it has occurred in traffic. It can be restarted by putting it in Neutral or Park. It has been doing this ever since I purchased the vehicle in 2017 with 68,000 miles on it. It now has 195,000 miles and the stalling has become more frequent. I hoped the recall for the fuel relay would fix it, but it has not. I have read that it is a TIPM problem. There are several hundred similar complaints on the NHTSA website. The problem is discussed in Jeep forums on the web. This is a serious safety issue because of potential rear-end collisions. Why won't Jeep or NHTSA address it?

ON MORE THAN 1 DOZEN OCCASIONS MY JEEP HAS STALLED WHILE DRIVING ANYWHERE FM 20 TO 40 MILES AN HOUR. I LOST STEERING CONTROL AND BRAKES WHILE THE REST OF GAGES STAYED ON. AFTER THE FIRST FEW TIMES I FIGURED OUT I COULD THROW IN NEUTRAL , HIT THE IGNITION BUTTON AND IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP. CHRYSLER JEEP TOLD ME THIS WAS A "RELAY " RECALL FOR OVER 1 1/2 YEARS THAT THEY HAD NO REPAIR FOR. SO THEY JUST KEPT REPLACING TRHE PART. I WOULD GET ANYWHERE FM 2 WKS TO FEW MONTHS WITH THE "NEW, BAD PART" THE REALL REPAIR CAME IN LAST WEEK. AFTER REPLACING IT, I MADE IT 2 DAYS BEFORE I STALLED AGAIN. THIS TIME ON AN EXIT RAMP DOING 30 MILES AN HOUR AROUND A SHARP TURN .I (AND MY 13 YEAR OLD SON) WENT OFF THE ROAD INTO A DITCH. I HAD TO USE 4 WHEEL DRIVE TO GET OUT. I CASUED MINOR F=DAMAGE ASWELL. THIS TIME! I KEEP TELLING THEM IT;S ONLY MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I DIE OR KILL SOMEONE WHEN THIS STALL HAPPENS. I HAVE HAD A RENTAL OR BEEN WITH OUT A CAR FOR AT LEAST 5 WEEKS OF THIS LAST YEAR ALONE FOR THIS RECALL FAILURE. I LOOK ONLINE AND THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF WEBSITES AND LINKS TO JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES THAT HAVE DONE THIS. HOW MANY PPL HAVE TO WREAK OR DIE TO GET SOMEONES ATTENTION?? THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON A TRADITIONAL TWO LANE COUNTRY ROAD. AS I APPROACHED A LEFT HANDED TURN, I PRESSED THE BREAK PEDAL AND INSTANTANEOUSLY LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BREAKS. THE VEHICLE BECAME DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AND DROVE OFF THE ROAD INTO A SMALL GRASS FIELD. AFTER COMING TO A STOP, I LOOKED AT THE DASH AND REALIZED THE TACHOMETER SHOWED 0 RPM INDICATING THE ENGINE HAD STALLED. AT FIRST, I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE SHIFTER WAS STILL IN DRIVE. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED WITH NO HESITATION ONCE THE SHIFTER WAS MOVED TO PARK. THE P54 RECALL HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN COMPLETED. FCA HAS BEEN INFORMED AND THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A JEEP DEALER. THE RECALL FOR V62 IS STILL IN DEVELOPMENT AND THE VEHICLE HAS SINCE RECEIVED THE TEMPORARY INTERIM REPAIR. I HAVE DECIDED TO PARK THE VEHICLE UNTIL FCA CAN REASSURE THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE.

TWICE ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, WHEN GOING ABOUT 25 MILES AN HOUR ON A TOWN ROAD AND BREAKING AND TURNING TO THE RIGHT (ONE TIME WAS MORE RIGHT THAN THE OTHER), MY CAR LOSES POWER OUT OF NO WHERE. MY ENGINE SHUTS OFF, I LOSE POWER STEERING, AND I LOSE MY BREAK ASSIST. IT IS VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS AND COULD CAUSE A LIFE THREATENING ACCIDENT. I CROSSED OVER INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE OF TRAFFIC WITH LITTLE TO NO CONTROL. FORTUNATELY BOTH TIMES NO ONE WAS NEAR ME AND I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A STOP. I CAN THEN RESTART THE CAR AND DRIVE AWAY. I DONT KNOW HOW TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE. I HAVE SEEN OTHER REPORTS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH OTHER GRAND CHEROKEES ON THE INTERNET. I DONT KNOW IF THE CURRENT RECALL THAT I NEED IS SUPPOSED TO ADDRESS IT OR NOT BUT I PLAN ON CALLING MY DEALER ABOUT IT ASAP. MY CAR IS ABOUT 149K MILES. I THINK THE LIGHTS STAY ON WHEN THIS HAPPENS.

TWO RECENT EVENTS, WHEN BRAKING IN SLOW TRAFFIC THERE WAS SUDDEN ACCELERATION WITH FOOT ON BRAKE. EVEN WITH STRONGER AND FORCEFUL BRAKE PRESSURE THE JEEP WAS STILL MOVING AND WANTING TO KEEP GOING WITH ENGINE REVVING. HAD TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND THEN ENGINE QUIT REVVING AND THINGS RETURNED TO NORMAL. I HAVE THIS JEEP 10 YEARS AND AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH IT. NEVER ANY WRECKS. NO MEDICAL PROBLEMS. THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT INTERFERING WITH ANY PEDALS. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY RECALLS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY SERVICED THE THROTTLE-BODY AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT. THIS APPARENTLY WAS NOT THE PROBLEM AS THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHEN BRAKING OCCURRED A SECOND TIME. IN GOOGLING THIS PROBLEM A BLOG MENTIONED THIS COULD BE THE JEEP BRAKE-BOOSTER WHICH HAS BEEN RECALLED AND WAS REPLACED ON MY JEEP 2 YEARS AGO. GOOGLE BRINGS UP THIS SUDDEN ACCELERATION AS A COMMON SEARCH BUT NO CLEAR ANSWERS. I KNOW ABOUT THE TOYOTA ACCELERATION PROBLEM IN THE 1990'S, THAT THEY NEVER FOUND OR ADMITTED ANYTHING MECHANICAL AND ASSUMED IT WAS GRANNY USING TWO FEET. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A MECHANICAL PROBLEM WITH MY 2011 JEEP. WILL TAKE TO DEALERSHIP BUT THEY ALREADY SAID THEY AREN'T AWARE OF THIS BEING A JEEP DEFECT. I REGISTERED THIS COMPLAINT WITH JEEP CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY SAID IF THE DEALERSHIP CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM TO CALL THEM BACK AND THEY WILL WORK WITH THE DEALERSHIP TO RESOLVE THIS. THEY WORRISOME THING IS THEY WILL DO SOMETHING FOR $1000 AND THEN I HAVE THIS BRAKE/ACCELERATION OCCUR A 3RD TIME AND IT CAUSES A CRASH!
