2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Interior & seats Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the interior system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Interior & seats reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle shut off inadvertently. The contact was able to pull over to an open lane, where the vehicle stopped. The vehicle failed to restart. The contact's husband charged the battery with a portable charger, and the vehicle restarted. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact's husband replaced both the battery and the alternator; however, the failure recurred a week later. The battery warning light was illuminated. The contact's husband replaced the alternator; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contacted stated that the check engine warning light and the brake warning light were illuminated. The contact later became aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 15V879000 (Electrical System, Interior Lighting), 19V813000 (Electrical System) and 17V572000 (Service Brakes, Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The local dealer and two other dealers were contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

When I went out to my car the morning of [XXX], 2024, I noticed that the passenger headrest was disconnected from the back and had been deployed without reason overnight. There was no accident or contact with the car it just did it on it's own. Luckily no one was in the car so there was no injury caused. I was advised by the local Jerry Ulm Jeep dealership in Tampa that their was an extended warranty for this issue that expired in 2021. I did not receive any correspondence so this was the first time hearing of this issue. From looking online it looks like it is a very widespread safety issue. I contacted Jeep directly to request approval for reimbursement before getting the car repaired but was denied. As mentioned, this problem occurred out of nowhere and is clearly due to faulty manufacturing and could have caused serious injury if someone was in the passengers seat. I would like for Jeep to be held accountable for this and to be reimbursed for the associated cost to get this fixed. Fire reported

While driving, an electric fire started in my Jeep due to a vanity lamp short (NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V879000) which is a known issue: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) recalled certain model year 2011-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured December 3, 2009, to September 1, 2012. "In the affected vehicles, the wiring for the vanity lamp in the sun visor may short circuit, after having been remedied for a prior recall for the vanity lamp wiring." I had this recall completed in November of 2017, which was confirmed by the manufacturer during my phone conversation today. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. My safety and others was at extreme risk as I was driving when this fire occurred above my head and I had to quickly pull over and exit my vehicle in a very busy area. There was also melting material dripping from the visor that nearly reached me in the driver's seat, but thankfully I was able to move out of the way and it melted my driver seat instead (as shown in picture). The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle has not been inspected yet by the manufacturer or insurance representatives or any others, it is at the Jeep dealership and I am waiting to hear back from the manufacturer on next steps for the extensive damage before anything is done.

WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, UNOCCUPIED, LOCKED, AND THE MOTOR WAS NOT RUNNING, APPARENTLY THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT CAUGHT FIRE. I DID NOT SEE THE ACTUAL FLAMES, BUT I DID OPEN THE DRIVER DOOR TO FIND THE BOTTOM CUSHION AND MOST OF THE ELECTRICAL WIRING IN THE DRIVER SEAT MELTED AND CHARRED AND A THICK LAYER OF SOOT ON EVERYTHING IN THE VEHICLE.

IS THERE A REMEDY FROM JEEP THAT ADDRESSES THE BUCKLING LEATHER DASH AND DRIVER BACK PANEL? I WOULD LIKE REPLACEMENT OF THE DASH AND A NEW SEAT. I BELIEVE THE SEAT PROBLEM IS NOT THE PANEL, BUT THE SEAT ITSELF. THE DASH BUCKLING IS A HAZARD TO OBSTRUCTING THE DRIVERS VISION OF THE ROADWAY AND THE SEAT BACK FALLING OFF CAN HURT A BACKSEAT PASSENGER. AS A CHILD ACIDENTALY GRABS IT TO CLIMB INTO THE BACKSEAT HE WOULD FALL.
