2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner Complaints

Reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers, shown in full

Data refreshed

Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Car has died while driving 4 times in the last 3 years. Complete loss of power WHILE driving. Lost of power steering, loss of brakes while driving. Chrystler is saying recall was resolved by previous owner but it is still happening. EXTREMELY dangerous. I have paid out of pocket to replace the TIPM (over $3000) and I was not told about the fuel pump relay issue associated and connected with this recall.

Fire reported

On February 3, Tuesday drove home from work. The battery light came on. I Drove to AutoZone and they placed it on Diagnostic reader. The diagnostic reader said that the battery had no charge. They told me I need a new battery. I replaced the battery. The next morning, I placed the jeep into auto start. So the Jeep can warm up. When I went outside, there was smoke coming from underneath the hood of the Jeep. I quickly turn off the Jeep and pop the hood. My husband open the hood and can see smoke coming from the alternator. He turned around to turn off his vehicle that was running. I started to video recording the incident and stopped it right away when I started to see flames coming out of the alternator. My husband and I quick action was to grab snow that was next to the Jeep to throw it onto the alternator to put the fire out. It took multiple piles of snow that the husband went and grabbed the fire extinguisher and sprayed the alternator to extinguish the fire. Once the fire was extinguished. We kept an eye out to make sure everything was good. We left the hood up to cool things down. We called morgan Towing to have the Jeep towed to their location to look at the situation. Morgan Towing picked the jeep up on February 4 Wednesday. They replaced the serpentine belt and the alternator. They called us to let us know the Jeep was done. Picked up the Jeep today, February 5 Thursday. I Drove it literally down the street and I can smell strong odor of smoke along with the battery light came back on. I turned back around and brought it back to Morgan Towing. I called my auto insurance and waiting to hear back from them. I am going to call the Dodge Jeep dealership and see what they have to say if if there’s was any recall on the Jeep. Upon my research so far, I didn’t see no recall but again I’m gonna call the dealership.

Started Jeep and after driver info cycled through on dash, the battery warning light came on. Battery had been replaced by local Jeep dealer within last 12 months. Contacted dealer, Keller Motors, while sitting in vehicle and made arrangements to drop off. Drove 3 miles to town with light still on. Then seat belt warning light came on and vehicle electrical system suffered complete shut down and would not restart. Got out and detected a smoke smell. Vehicle would not restart. Had vehicle towed to local Jeep dealer and reported issues to service manager. They will look at Jeep next week. Have there been similar incidents reported? My Jeep 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was repaired under Recall P54 (NHTSA 14V-530) on October 20, 2016, which was supposed to fix a fuel-pump relay defect that could cause engine stalling. Despite the recall repair, stalling continued and worsened, forcing me to pay $573.56 for an independent repair on July 16, 2024 to restore safe operation. Jeep later issued Recall V62 (NHTSA 19V-813) in 2019, acknowledging that the earlier P54 recall fix was defective and could fail due to silicon contamination. I did not receive notice of V62 until late summer 2025, long after paying for repairs. Jeep denied my reimbursement request, citing lack of prior contact and the fact that repairs were done by an independent shop. This is unfair and contrary to federal recall reimbursement policy, since the defect was safety-related, the original recall fix failed, and Jeep admitted that V62 was issued to correct P54’s failure. I request that NHTSA review this case and ensure Stellantis/Jeep complies with recall reimbursement obligations under 49 CFR §573.13.

The engine oil filter housing cooler (part number is: 5184294AE) are made of dissimilar materials (plastic and aluminum) and with normal hot oil temperatures the materials expand and contract at different rates causing failure of the part and leaks. The leak causes loss of engine oil and engine coolant that can sudden engine damage while driving putting the driver and passengers at risk. This seems to affect not only this 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicle with a 3.6 Liter engine, but almost all 3.6 Liter engines in other Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram vehicles.
