Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling various 2003-2018 Crossroads, Dutchmen, and Keystone recreational trailers equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V755-5127.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
The risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
The remedy: Keystone will notify owners and instruct them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2018. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-574-535-2100, or Kidde customer service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. Keystone's number for this recall is 17-307.

The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Alpine fifth-wheel recreational trailers manufactured August 10, 2015, to December 1, 2016, and Avalanche fifth-wheel recreational trailers manufactured September 11, 2015, to December 1, 2016. The Federal Placard on the affected vehicles may have incorrect spare tire load range information. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
The risk: If the operator inflates the spare tire using the information on the Federal Certification label information, the tire may be overinflated, increasing the risk of tire failure.
The remedy: Keystone has notified owners, and dealers will replace the Federal Placard, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2017. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 17-275.

The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Keystone Avalanche recreational vehicles, model 355RK, manufactured from May 6, 2013, through April 24, 2014; model year 2015-2016 Keystone Alpine, models 3100RL, 3101RL, 3555RL, 3556RL, 3590RS, 3591RS, 3600RS, 3601RS, and 3730RS, manufactured from October 8, 2014, through July 28, 2015; and model year 2016 Keystone Laredo, models 325RL, 350FB, and 355RL, manufactured from July 13, 2015, through July 21, 2015. The affected vehicles may be equipped with a rear window that has a sticker labeling it as an emergency exit sticker. However, this window may be partially blocked by the rear ladder and was not intended to be a secondary emergency exit.
The risk: In the event of an emergency, occupants could try to escape through the rear window, but would not be able to. This delay in their escape may increase the risk of injury.
The remedy: Keystone has notified owners, and dealers will remove the emergency exit sticker, free of charge. The recall began on August 17, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 15-233.

SHORTLY AFTER PICKING UP OUR NEW RV , WE NOTICED THE TWO CENTER SLIDEOUTS WOULD CREEP OUT WHILE TOWING RV ON HIGHWAY. WE HAVE NOTIFIED KEYSTONE OF THIS PROB AND HAVE HAD THE RV IN THE SHOP 2 TIMES AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A HYDRAULIC LEAK , AND STILL TO THIS DAY IT IS STILL THE SAME PROBLEM, SLIDEOUT ARE COMING OUT GOING DOWN HIGHWAY. I AM TAKING THE RV BACK IN AGAIN TO ANOTHER REPAIR SHOP. THIS IS A HIGHWAY HAZARD WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION ON ANY ROAD OR HIGHWAY SLIDEOUT OUT COULD HIT ANYTHING IN ITS PATH. NOW AS WE TRAVEL WE HAVE TO STOP EVERY 40 MILES TO GET TO RV CONTROLS TO SLIDE THEM BACK IN. IT IS GETTING WORSE THEY ARE COMING OUT MORE OFTEN. WE HAVE ALL RECORDS OF THIS PROBLEM , WHEN WE REPORTED IT TO KEYSTONE, AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT WAS A COMPUTER GLITCH. IS THERE ANY CORRESPONDENCE YOU CAN SEND TO KEYSTONE TO GET THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED BEFORE IT CAUSES AN ACCIDENT? *TR

THE TIGHT REAR SHACKLE BOLTS FAILED ON THE LIPPERT AUTO ALIGNMENT SUSPENSION, CAUSING THE TRAILER WHEELS TO BECOME MISALIGNED FORCING THE TRAILER TO FORCE THE SUSPENSION TO TRACK TO THE LEFT. THE SHACKLE BOLTS FAILED TO THE NUTS BECAME LOOSE CAUSING THE SHACKLE PLATES TO FALL OFF THE TRAILER. THE CONDITION WAS DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE TRAILER COULD HAVE FLIPPED WHEN TOWED. I HAD TO HAVE THE TRAILER SUSPENSION REPAIRED. THE SHACKLE BOLTS WERE DETERMINED TO BE UNDERSIZED FOR THE TRAILER AND THE CORES HAD BEEN BORED TO ALLOW GREASE FITTING TO BE INSTALLED IN THE HEADS OF THE BOLTS WEAKENING THE STRUCTURAL STRNGTH. THE BOLTS WERE REPLACED WITH SOLID BOLTS AT ALL POINTS OF THE SUSPENSION TO PREVENT FURTHER FAILURE. I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY MY DEALER THAT FOREST RIVER HAS RECALLED TRAILERS USING THE LIPPERT SELF-ALIGNING SUSPENSION BECAUSE THE SHACKLE BOLTS SHEAR OFF. THIS ISSUE WOULD BE EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE AS MINE. MORE IMAGES AVAILABLE!

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

15-244

STRUCTURE:BODY:ROOF AND PILLARS

THIS ADVISORY 15-244 INVOLVES UNITS MANUFACTURED WITH A POTENTIAL SLIT IN THE ROOF MEMBRANE THAT MAY HAVE OCCURRED BEHIND THE FRONT CAP. IF THE ROOF MEMBRANE IS NOT REPLACED, THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR WATER DAMAGE.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
