Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Dutch Star, Mountain Aire, London Aire, Essex, and 2016 London Aire motorhomes. The pedestal mounting plate may be improperly welded, causing the plate to separate and the seat assembly to loosen or detach. As such, these seat assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, “Seating Systems,", and number 210, "Seat belt assembly anchorages."
The risk: A loose or detached seat assembly increases the risk of injury.
The remedy: Dealers will inspect for a missing weld, and replace the pedestal as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 31, 2024. Owners may contact Newmar customer service at 1-800-731-8300. Newmar's number for this recall is 608 RSB.

The defect: Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling certain 2023 Dutch Star motorhomes. The adjustable brake pedal may come into contact with the dash panel, resulting in unintentional brake engagement, which can cause the brakes to overheat and fail.
The risk: Brake failure can increase the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Dealers will trim the dash panel to add more clearance at the brake pedal and dash panel, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 1, 2022. Owners may contact Newmar's customer service at 1-800-731-8300.

The defect: Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling certain 2022 Super Star, Ventana, 2022-2023 New Aire, Essex, Dutch Star, and Mountain Aire motorhomes equipped with International Thermal Research powered heaters. These heaters could have an incorrect fuel line installed that may leak.
The risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
The remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel line as needed, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 30, 2022. Owners may contact Newmar's customer service at 1-800-731-8300.

I experienced unintended collision braking with dash warnings flashing. I was trying to accelerate from a side street onto a two-lane state highway. The motorhome came to a complete stop after getting up to about 30-35 MPH. After an extraordinarily long minute or so I was able to accelerate a second time and the motorhome did unintended braking a second time! It was very scary because I was blocking a busy highway in one direction, and I was not sure what to do. I finally turned the engine off, turned the ignition key on, and waited to make sure the engine and dash system completely rebooted before starting the engine (this is what I normally do). I was then able to accelerate up to speed. The vehicles behind me had to brake hard to avoid running into my motorhome during the collision braking, they then had a challenging time passing me safely due to my generous size, and my stress level was extremely high. By coincidence I was taking the motorhome to be serviced for other items that morning. While on my way to the dealership a CMS Fault warning was displayed for the first time. I safely stopped the motorhome at a rest stop and restarted the engine. This turned the CMS Fault warning off. The Newmar dealer is to diagnosis the problem with Newmar's technical support. I have not picked up my motorhome as of July 5, 2024, so I do not know if the CMS Fault is fixed. I did not get any warnings before the unintended braking, only the CMS Fault warning afterwards. I do not know what fault codes the dealership may have read in the CMS control module, and I do not know if the dealership has replaced or adjusted any components at this time.

The 2023 Newmar Dutch Star 4326 with a Freightliner Custom Chassis was built without an exterior temperature gauge. This is the first vehicle I've seen like this in many years. I'm on our first trip with my family onboard and we're driving thru the NC mountains in a wintery mix with temperatures varying from above to below freezing. I'm very nervous not knowing when the roads will begin to ice over on treacherous roads. I've discussed with Newmar and Freightliner and they both just say they don't know why it's not there and that they cannot add it. I see this as a major safety issue and recommend a recall to have them installed. There are many people driving these 52,000 lb rigs who do not have much experience. Please help us save lives.

SEATS

Newmar Corporation Service Department was made aware of a Captain Chair Pedestal manufactured by Villa International that had the welds break at the pedestal-to-base plate connection. The weld breaking would cause the seat to no longer comply with FMVSS 207 and 210. Villa filed NHTSA recall # 23E098. In response, Newmar has filed NHTSA # 24V 019 and TC# 2024-016.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Due to ITR releasing a technical bulletin MTB-229-20, Newmar has released a recall bulletin NHTSA # 22V 583 and TC# 2022-436. On certain Newmar motorhomes equipped with International Thermal Research powered heaters, ITR may have installed an incorrect fuel line on the heater, which may leak fuel.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
