Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling various 1995-2018 motorhomes. A list of the affected vehicles available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V809-2309.pdf. These motorhomes are equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers that may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
The risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
The remedy: Newmar will notify owners, and instruct them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on February 7, 2018. Owners may contact Kidde customer service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information or owners may contact Newmar customer service at 1-574-773-7791. WHILE ON A DOWNGRADE WITH THE ENGINE BRAKE ENGAGED AND IN 4TH GEAR, AT ABOUT 1900 RPM, THE SIDE MOUNTED FAN EXPLODED SENDING PLASTIC AND METAL PARTS OUT THE REAR OF THE MOTORHOME SHOWERING THE VEHICLE BEING TOWED AND ANOTHER VEHICLE FOLLOWING BEHIND. UPON INSPECTION THE FAN, WHICH IS DRIVEN BY A HYDRAULIC PUMP, WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ATTACHED BY TWO BOLTS TO A CROSS BAR BETWEEN THE RADIATOR AND THE ENGINE. THE BOLT HOLES IN THE HYDRAULIC PUMP WERE ELONGATED AND BOTH BOLTS HAD SHEARED OFF ALLOWING THE PUMP TO FALL DOWN WHICH RESULTED IN THE FAN BLADES HITTING THE CHASSIS FRAME AND CAUSING THE FAN TO BOUNCE AROUND THE COMPARTMENT HITTING THE RADIATOR AND PIPING AND THE INTERCOOLER PIPING. THIS HYDRAULIC SYSTEM IS ALSO PART OF THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. UPON BEING TOWED BACK TO RAPID CITY, SD THERE WAS ANOTHER DUTCHSTAR (A 2000) AT THE FREIGHTLINER DEALER WITH THE SAME FAILURE. REPLACEMENT PARTS CONSISTED OF A HYDRAULIC DRIVE MOTOR, RADIATOR AND INTERCOOLER PLUS ALL THE REPLACEMENT FLUIDS FOR BOTH. I RETAINED THE HYDRAULIC DRIVE MOTOR IF NEEDED. IF THE FAN HAD SEVERED THE HYDRAULIC LINE THAT WOULD HAVE DISABLED THE STEERING SYSTEM WITH LOSS OF THE ABILITY TO STEER. ALSO IF THERE WERE NOT A VEHICLE BEING TOWED THAT TOOK THE BLOW OF MOST OF THE PARTS COMING OFF THE ENGINE THE VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN AND FOLLOWING BEHIND COULD HAVE RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT.

DRIVING ON I-90 IN SOME RAINY WEATHER, ERROR CODE LIGHT CAME ON. I STOPPED CHECKED ALL FLUID LEVELS & CONTINUED ON. A FEW HOURS LATER THE ENGINE BEGAN TO INCREASE IN SPEED ON ITS OWN .RPM'S WERE AT 2000 & THE COACH WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP. THE CHASSIS CONNECTOR ( CONNECTS COACH TO ENGINE AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE) FILLED WITH WATER AND CAUSED SHORTS,CROSSES,AND GROUNDS IN THE WIRING AND CAUSED THE MOTORHOME TO INCREASE IN SPEED ON ITS OWN. THE BRAKES WERE HOT AND SMOKING WHEN WE FINALLY GOT STOPPED. TECHNICIAN PULLED CONNECTOR APART, USED COMPRESSED AIR TO REMOVE THE WATER & A CONTACT CLEANER TO CLEAN THE PROBES & CONTACTS IN THE CONNECTOR. CONNECTOR WAS PLUGGED BACK TOGETHER, ALL SHORTS, GROUNDS, AND CROSSES WERE GONE. TECHNICIAN CLEARED ALL ERROR CODES, PUT SILICONE ON CONNECTOR TO KEEP WATER OUT UNTIL CONNECTOR CAN BE REPLACED. UPON LEAVING THE SHOP TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT UP UNTIL RPM'S WERE AT 2000. IT WILL NOT SHIFT INTO 6TH UNLESS IT IS DONE MANUALLY. *NM

DT: CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE FRONT TIRES. BEFORE RECEIVING THE RECALL CONSUMER ROTATED THE TIRES ,TAKING THE TWO FRONT TIRES OFF AND PUTTING THEM ON THE BACK INNER REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE RECALL LETTER STATED THAT DEALER WOULD ONLY REPLACE THE TWO FRONT TIRES AND THEY DID. BUT THOSE WERE NOT THE ORIGINAL FRONT TIRES, AND BECAUSE THEY HAD BEEN ROTATED AND PUT T ON THE BACK, DEALER WOULDN'T REPLACE THEM IN THE RECALL. THERE WERE THREE DIFFERENT TIRE BLOW OUTS. THE FIRST ONE OCCURRED BEFORE THE RECALL. CONSUMER HAD TO FIND THAT SIZE TIRE SO HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY SAID TO PUT THE RECALL SIZE ON THE TIRES. MANUFACTURER REIMBURSE CONSUMER FOR THAT TIRE. THE TIRE WAS LOCATED ORIGINALLY ON THE FRONT, BUT IT WAS ROTATED TO INNER REAR AT THE TIME OF THE BLOW OUT. THE SECOND TIME THE TIRE WAS LOCATED ON THE INNER REAR AND IT WAS ROTATED FROM THE FRONT, BUT IT WAS NOT AN ORIGINAL TIRE. IT HAD BEEN ON THE FRONT ABOUT 1500 MILES AFTER IT GOT ROTATED. THE THIRD TIME THE TIRE HAD BEEN ON THE FRONT AT SOME POINT. ALL TOGETHER 3 OF THE 4 TIRES BLEW OUT. ONE OF THE ORIGINAL FRONT TIRES GOT MOVED TO THE INNER REAR, AND IT WAS THE FIRST OF THE THREE BLOW OUTS. THE OTHER ORIGINAL FRONT TIRE WAS USED AS A SPARE TIRE AND IS CURRENTLY LOCATED ON THE INNER REAR.*AK

BOTH FRONT WINDSHIELDS WORKED THEMSELVES OUT OF THE RUBBER GASKET AROUND THE WINDSHIELDS. CONSUMER HAS A CONCERN THAT THE WINDSHIELDS MAY NOT STAY PROPERLY IN PLACE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED AND/OR IN INCLEMENT CONDITIONS. MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. *AK THE RV WAS TAKEN TO A GLASS COMPANY WHO INDICATED THAT THE GLASS WAS TOO LARGE FOR THE OPENING AND REFUSE TO ATTEMPT REPAIR. ANOTHER GLASS COMPANY STATED THAT THE CURVATURE OF THE GLASS DIDN'T MATCH THE CURVATURE OF THE BODY. THEY ALSO REFUSED TO REPAIR THE GLASS. THE MANUFACTURER WILL ONLY PERFORM NO WARRANTY WORK AT THE PLANT DURING WINTER MONTHS (JAN, FEB, MARCH). THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THIS PROBLEM IS A DESIGN FLAW. *NM

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

PIB 494

EQUIPMENT

If the coach's HWH leveling system has intermittent issues when operating, check for corrosion or loose mounting bolts. Torque the mounting bolts (if needed) to 30 ft. pounds. A ground cable may also be installed to improve the overall grounding of the HWH pump assembly.

TSB 439

STEERING

NEWMAR CORPORATION HAS DECIDED THAT A DEFECT RELATING TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY EXISTS IN SPECIFIC MOTOR HOMES BUILT ON SPARTAN CHASSIS. THIS RECALL IS THE RESULT OF INFORMATION PROVIDED TO NEWMAR BY SPARTAN MOTORS. NHTSA # 15V 829 TC # 2015-587 THE STEERING GEAR MOUNTING BRACKET MAY CRACK AND BREAK, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH CAUSING INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
