2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

While driving at approximately 45 mph, the steering system suddenly failed without any warning. The steering wheel became extremely stiff and nearly impossible to turn, resulting in a sudden loss of control of the vehicle. I was unable to safely steer, especially when attempting to turn right, which nearly caused a crash. There were no warning lights, alerts, or prior symptoms before this failure. The issue occurred abruptly and without any indication, creating a serious and unexpected safety hazard. Due to the severity of the problem, the vehicle had to be towed and is unsafe to drive. This appears to be a failure of the electronic power steering (EPS) system. A sudden loss of steering assist at driving speed presents a significant risk of injury or death to the driver, passengers, and others on the road. This is a critical safety issue that should be investigated immediately.

Fire reported

The failure occurred in the rear sliding window defroster electrical system, specifically at the left-side electrical connection of the power sliding rear window. The component overheated and ignited, causing fire damage and shattering of the rear left portion of the window. The vehicle and damaged components are currently available for inspection upon request. The defect resulted in an active electrical fire during normal vehicle operation (remote start while warming up). This posed a serious risk of vehicle fire, injury to occupants, and potential spread to nearby vehicles or structures. As a firefighter, I recognized the danger and immediately shut off the vehicle and ventilated it; without trained action, the incident could have resulted in a total vehicle loss or more severe consequences. Yes. Copeland Chevrolet in Hudson, Massachusetts inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the damage was consistent with the known defect in the rear sliding window defroster system, consistent with GM Customer Satisfaction Program XXX. The vehicle has been inspected by an authorized GM dealership (Copeland Chevrolet). No police or insurance inspection has occurred to date. No warning lamps, messages, or prior symptoms were present. The failure occurred suddenly and without warning during normal operation while the vehicle was warming up using the factory-installed remote start. This is a known defect acknowledged by GM under Customer Satisfaction Program XXX (which expired in 2022), which described overheating and fire risk in the rear sliding window defroster electrical connection. That program was limited by state and excluded Massachusetts, so I was never notified despite identical risk. This same defect is currently the subject of an active safety recall in Canada, where it is treated as a fire hazard requiring corrective action. Vehicle has electrical issues with headlamps flickering and power steering loss (which is electronic) at lower speeds. Power and radio intermittently cut out momentarily and on occasion a "stabilitrac loss" warning flashes. Looking online, many consumers experience this issue which appears to be due to faulty ground or battery connections and many have reported complete loss of power at highway speeds resulting in accidents. This appears on several Chevrolet vehicles, but especially on the Silverado and GMC Sierra 2014-2017 models. I am very surprised a recall has not been issued yet for this very dangerous and potentially fatal issue.

I have had a problem with the theft deterrent system which, shuts the truck down and issues a message saying "turn the driver side window down and then up". After 5 minutes the truck starts back up by itself? This has occurred sitting in Popeyes drive thru line in August 2024 in Benton Harbor, Mi. This has occurred 3 times in the past week, 09/25/25 driving on Garrett road it shut down during the entry into a "s curve" 09/26/25 driving into my drive way 09/28/25 driving into my drive way Took the truck into Wimberley Chevy dealer and they searched for error codes and checked some of the ground wires not connected properly and found the negative cable on battery was ok. I don't know if any other wire connectors were checked, however I have had this before and the dealer said they would have to keep the truck as it may take quite some time in confirming all connections were good. the service manage of LeValley Cheverolet stated that they would require a $1,000 deposit for them to start looking into the problem and again require another $1,000 deposit to continue and then another etc. I will not drive my truck on any major highway or in any very busy large city for fear of having a return of another shutdown and no place to pull into as I was only coasting when I entered the "S curves" and had space.

Experienced a problem with electrical theft deterrent system and it shut the vehicle off while driving. I tried to start the vehicle and nothing happened except it said theft deterrent system. I took the key out tried starting again and it turned over immediately. The dash said theft deterrent and I clicked dismiss but the dash icon (a car with a lock light) remained on. I then drove 11 miles home. I turned on my directional proceeded to brake upon approaching my driveway. As I attempted to turn the steering wheel the vehicle completely shut off. The info system stating theft deterrent active. I lost power steering and brakes. I needed to press the brakes with great force because the vehicle was headed towards the sidewalk and a road sign. Steering was virtually unresponsive. Vehicle stopped as the tires reached the curb and approximately 1 ft from the sign. Placed vehicle in park and started it back up. Pulled into my driveway and the info system stated I need to roll the drivers window down and the up to deactivate. I have checked all battery connections are intact and tight. The battery, starter and alternator were all checked and fine. I have no idea what caused this dangerous behavior. The incident happened on MA Rt. 126 988 S. Main st Bellingham MA 02019

On 5 separate occasions during the last week my truck steering wheel became difficult to steer while executing a slow turn and then I lost all power almost causing me to crash. After my vehicle stopped I was able to restart it. I took my vehicle to a repair shop where they were unable to find any codes indicating a problem and suggested taking it to a dealer. I was able to find many people posting similar issues online and a service bulletin PIT5405C from January 2017. 2015 to 2017 Silverados were impacted according to this bulletin. When I contacted the Chevrolet Service department they could not find a recall for my vehicle.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the gauges on the instrument cluster were fluctuating, and the power steering warning light and the stabili-trak warning light lights were illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and allowed the engine to cool down. The contact stated that upon restarting the vehicle, the vehicle responded as needed. The contact stated that the failure had been occurring mainly in hot weather. Additionally, the contact stated that if the vehicle was not pulled over to the side of the road until the vehicle cooled down, the vehicle gradually lost motive power. The contact stated that the failure had been occurring intermittently. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics, where the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the same assessment was made. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V586000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

Fire reported

I remote started my vehicle about 5 minutes prior to getting in. After I got in and placed the key in the ignition, I started to smell smoke. I see in my rear view mirror the entire cab of my truck started to fill with smoke. When I turned my head around the interior of my rear window was on fire and my entire truck cab filled with smoke. I get out of the vehicle and immediately try and look for help as the fire was inside of my vehicle and the smoke smell was overwhelming. The fire then died out and the driver’s side pane on the rear window then shattered. I am now left with a shattered window and a vehicle that is left with unknown damage from a fire inside the pane. After going back and forth with a dealer that contacted Chevy for me, they determined there was no recall for the vehicle. Further research showed that this incident happened one other time in March of 2020 and was repaired once and the original recall was cleared. Chevy states that they have already repaired it once and are not liable to fix it a second time. This is a huge safety hazard and I am left questioning the integrity of my vehicle and the safety after what unknown damage has been done.

I heard a sharp click like metal on metal, then I lost all power from the engine. I was on the highway close to rush hour and I was trying to move to the right side of the road and get off on the shoulder, the engine would start long enough to get off the road and then that was it. The engine was dead. I called for a flatbed tow truck through my insurance. I had no idea as to what had happened. However, I have read many reports of engine failure concerning the 5.3 v8 engine which I have. The Chevrolet Silverado 1/2 ton pickup was towed on a flatbed truck to Chevrolet, They found that the engine had dropped a valve in the #7 cylinder and some rocker arms, etc also had broken. The final billing was $7092.89 I was in traffic going around 60mph when the engine died and put me in an emergency situation. This could have caused a wreck. Several warning lights came on because of a dead engine. I do not believe any rep. has inspected the parts as this has become a common serious problem, it is all over the internet however I have not seen a Recall at this time. I sincerely believe GM should be responsible for this as it has been happening for years and years. Thank you for listening
