Loss of Motive Power
On June 8, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened PE23011 to investigate allegations of loss of motor power on model year (MY) 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles. Some consumers reported loss of motor power immediately after a warning lamp illumination or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. This investigation found that the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) may be subject to various conditions such as overcurrent, overvoltage induced at the end of charging, and certain thermal loading during operation that can damage its internal components and open the ICCU fuse, resulting in an inability to charge the 12-volt battery. The vehicle could eventually lose all motive power, increasing the risk of a crash. In July 2023, Hyundai issued a service campaign to address certain MY 2022-2023 Ioniq 5 and MY 2023 Ioniq 6 vehicles that may have low 12V auxiliary battery charging occurrences due to an ICCU fault and may set the DTC P1A9096 “DC/DC Converter Input Voltage Sensor Fault”. On March 15, 2024, Hyundai filed Safety Recall 24V-204 for 98,878 MY 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles and MY 2023-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 “Electrified” and Genesis G80 “Electrified” vehicles. The recall remedy provides an inspection, and if necessary, a replacement of the ICCU and the associated fuse. The ICCU software reduces the risk of overcurrent and implements voltage peak reduction at the end of EV battery charging. The recall also includes a software update that revises the electric water pump operational threshold to reduce thermal loading during charging and driving. In view of the recall action being taken by Hyundai, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. Was driving to vegas, it was 103-107 degrees After fast DC charging drivetrain had issues that when pressing acceleration the car would have almost a loss in power that caused a stuttering movement. If forcefully driven, the error message drivetrain electrical system would pop up. Issue can be resolved but only after letting the car stay in park for 10-15 minutes after finished charging. Issue was repeatable but only if weather was hot enough. This shouldn't happen or at least warn the driver to not drive for a certain period instead of guessing the issue.

Going thru a parking lot to a drive thru at a fast food place, rounding a small curve at a very low speed then trying go to 1 st lane out of 2 lanes the car suddenly went out of control and accelerated to center pole. The pole was a barrier protecting the support pole for the canopy. The car front center hit the pole so hard that the front collapsed. The hood buckled in the center and the pole went half way to the windscreen. The air bags did not deploy. The driver got hit with steering or something in the chest and caused lot of pain for about 10 days. No internal injury was detected. The car was totalled. The car did not complain of any incident except the dash reported something binding when tried to back off from the pole. The car repair company declared it as write off including the auto insurance company. Police was called and they did not take any data no other investigation was done. We feel the car computer malfunctioned and caused the accident.

The car engine shutdown mid drive. One minute before the complete stop, the car was stalling every 20 sec or so, then the acceleration stop responding to the drive pedal. The car was gliding to a stopping point. The "Engine " warning was on the display. Afterward, the car was towed to the Earnhardt Hyundai North Scottsdale, where the service center could not recreate the problem. They concluded that is a non issue since they did not observe the same issue during the test and diagnostic.

Vehicle steering or at least power steering failed catastrophically. Started with some electronic sounds at extremes of turning radius but subsequently failed completely and rendered car undriveable. Hyundai repair center attributed this to "excessive dirt and dust" or some external force, but was unable to substantiate or demonstrate any damage to parts they say need replacing. Ultimately this remains undiagnosed with regards to cause but dealer clearly identifies need to replace P/S motor and rack and pinion assembly. Insurance inspection documents no sign of external involvement in the failure. No warning lights/messages. Problem is repeatable. While failure would have been a safety risk at higher speed, it went from "noise at edge of turning radius" to "cannot steer the car" at a point in time where the car was moving at low speeds.

On 5/27/26, when the car was parked in parking lot, received an alert on dashboard, "check electric vehicle system", when the car was turned on. The car would not shift in to drive or reverse so had to get towed to nearby Hyundai dealership. The EV system was recalibrated and test driven 122 miles to verify proper operation. Then on 6/23/26, when driving on road received an alert on dashboard "power limited". The car would not accelerate and had to get it towed again to same dealership. The dealership performed tests on ICCU and 12V battery but came back negative.

During routine driving, the vehicle suddenly displayed an electrical system. Error code followed several minutes later by a 12-volt battery error. The vehicle was stopped and turned off. When turned back on all warnings disappeared and vehicle was returned to service for approximately 3 MI before warnings appeared again. Vehicle was then parked as it entered limp mode with a maximum speed of 11 mph. manufacturers roadside assistance was called and arrived to jumpstart the 12-volt battery which resulted in the vehicle turning on but not charging despite sufficient charge in the high voltage battery. Vehicle was stranded in a secure parking lot after hours with Windows unable to be closed and doors unable to lock. The vehicle is immobilized due to being unable to put the vehicle into neutral to move it to a suitable location for a tow. Vehicle was certified by dealership as a certified pre-owned vehicle approximately 45 days ago. All listed recalls have been checked and no undue stress has been placed on the vehicle since purchase. Vehicle stranded to adults and one toddler in 80 plus degree heat without any ability to remove the car to a safe location or secure transportation to an appropriate business.

This is an EV . We use the regenerative braking to slow down. This car has both a front and rear dash cam. The car is about two and a half years old and has about 20,800 miles. We were approaching a red traffic light with several vehicles stopped in front of us. My partner was driving and had slowed to 8 mph, with her foot off the accelerator, advancing slowly towards the car in front of us when the vehicle experienced unanticipated, rapid acceleration. With quick reflexes, she was able brake hard and avoided a collision. Ten minutes later she was parking at our house, going 4 mph and it did it again, coming within four feet of the building. Neither time was she touching the accelerator, but the car accelerated like the accelerator was pressed to the floor. This is very dangerous.

On June 13, 2026, my 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 experienced a sudden and dangerous propulsion failure while in active motion. The vehicle had approximately 9,447 miles on it and was at 58% battery charge at the time of the incident. The vehicle was leased in January 2025 and has been serviced exclusively at the Hyundai dealership. While driving with two occupants, the vehicle abruptly lost all ability to accelerate. The dashboard displayed a critical warning: “Stop vehicle and check power supply” along with a red battery icon. This failure occurred without warning and immediately placed us in danger of being struck by surrounding traffic, as the vehicle could no longer maintain speed or respond to throttle input. I was able to coast the vehicle off the roadway. Shortly after stopping, the vehicle issued an additional warning stating that auxiliary functions were draining the battery. Within moments, the vehicle shut itself down completely. This left both occupants stranded in extreme heat (over 100°F) with no air conditioning, no ventilation, and no ability to restart or power the vehicle while waiting for rescue. This created a serious risk of heat-related medical distress in addition to the initial roadway hazard. The vehicle’s complete loss of propulsion followed by a full electrical shutdown represents a severe safety defect. At no point should an electric vehicle with more than half a charge and fewer than 10,000 miles lose propulsion during active driving or shut down all systems while occupants are inside. This incident posed a significant risk of collision, injury, or heat-related harm. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this failure mode, as it may indicate a broader defect affecting the propulsion or battery management systems of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The vehicle is currently at the Hyundai dealership undergoing diagnostics and they confirmed they had difficulty jumping it to move it from where the tow truck had parked it on arrival.

At Hyundai, we are committed to providing vehicles of outstanding quality and value. In an effort to meet this commitment, the warranty coverage for the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) and ICCU Fuse Replacement has been extended to 15 years/ 180,000 miles from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use (whichever occurs first) and is valid for original and subsequent owners.

The changes may vary depending on vehicle type, model, and navigation system. AIR BAGS
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the presence of substandard and dangerous driver’s-side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN). These inflators were not supplied, approved, or authorized by the vehicle manufacturers and have primarily been found in vehicles that previously experienced a crash and underwent airbag replacement using non-genuine parts. These dangerous inflators have ruptured during deployment, posing a serious risk of injury or death due to metal fragments entering the vehicle cabin. To date, Hyundai is aware of three people who have died while driving a Hyundai vehicle with one of these substandard replacement airbag inflators that deployed in what likely would have been a survivable crash. NHTSA has issued a public advisory urging vehicle owners and service professionals to have vehicles inspected if there is reason to believe that a non-genuine replacement airbag may have been installed. Vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles, prior airbag deployments, or unknown repair histories may present a higher risk. NHTSA strongly cautions against self-inspection by vehicle owners and recommends inspection by trained technicians.
