Safety investigations
NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
Frame/Body Structure Corrosion
In their Defect Information Report (DIR) of April 20, 2011, Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified NHTSA that it would conduct a safety recall of certain 1996-2004 Nissan Pathfinder and 1997-2003 Infinity QX4 vehicles to repair corrosion damage to the driver's side front strut tower. The vehicles included in the recall are those that were originally sold, or are currently registered in salt belt states including Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The DIR states in part, ...the strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. This could lead to the strut housing panel separating and contacting the steering column lower shaft.Contact with the steering column lower shaft can cause steering difficulties and may require an increase in steering effort by the driver. If the steering column lower shaft completely fractured it would result in a total loss of steering control. In some cases, the strut housing panel can contact or affect adjacent brake system components.Complainants reported experiencing either steering or brake system issues, and in some cases, both.Nissan dealer's will inspect the strut housing and, based on the level of corrosion found, make an assessment as to how to remedy the vehicle (see defect information report for additional details). Brake system components adjacent to, and in the area of, the strut tower (i.e., brake master cylinder, left front brake line, ABS wire harness, etc.) will also be inspected.
Recent owner complaints
Reports submitted to NHTSA, shown in the owner's own words
The vehicle is completely rusting underneath and running boards. I was told by Infiniti customer affairs that the recalls had closed for rusted out struts. This impacts driving and can become a safety concern if the struts completely rust away. I'm concerned for my safety or the safety of my family if this failure occurs. The dealerships will not honor a recall that is no longer valid or closed. This is a potential life safety issue.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 INFINITI QX4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S FRAME WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AND THE FUEL TANK DID NOT INDICATE WHEN IT WAS AT FULL CAPACITY. AS A RESULT, FUEL WOULD OVERFLOW. THE RUST FAILURE WAS REMEDIED IN 2012. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO INFINITI OF NORTHERN KENTUCKY (1945 DIXIE HWY, FORT WRIGHT, KY 41011) FOR OTHER REPAIRS; HOWEVER, IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED FOR THE FUEL FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

SERIOUS CORROSION ON THE FRAME. THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHERE THE CONTROL ARM ATTACHES TO THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT JUST BEYOND THE STRUT MOUNT RECALL LOCATION. THE DEALERSHIP DEEMED IT NOT ABLE TO BE FIXED AND WAS TOLD BY BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS THAT ITS NOT THEIR PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH I STARTED HEARING A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE RIGHT FRONT. SOON AFTER THE WHEEL STARTED SHAKING WHILE TURNING LEFT. KNOCKING GOT WORSE AND IT STARTED TO SWAY UNCONTROLLABLY WHILE TURNING. HAD IT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP WHERE IT IS STILL SITTING AND NOT ABLE TO BE DRIVEN. UPDATED 08/29/2017*JS

I WAS TOLD ABOUT A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE DUE TO FRAME BODY STRUT HOUSING CORROSION, I'M HEARING A CLICKING SOUND AS I PROCEED TO MAKE TURNS NOW. I TOOK IT IN TO BE LOOKED AT TO SEE IF NOISE I WAS HEARING COULD BE REPAIRED, UPON THE MECHANIC PLACING THE VEHICLE ON THE LIFT HE NOTICED THE CORROSION ON FRONT END OF THE STRUT HOUSING.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 INFINITI QX4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REFUELING THE VEHICLE, FUEL SPEWED BACK FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V435000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY INSPECTED AND NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER WAS INSTRUCTED BY THE MANUFACTURER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLES FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY FOR COATING AND MAKE REPAIRS IF NECESSARY. HOWEVER, THE RECALL NOTICE REMEDY INDICATED THAT DEALERS WOULD REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 183,000.

MY 2000 INFINITI QX4 HAD A VISUAL INSPECTION DONE AT THE INFINITI OF BELLEVUE WA ON AUG 4, 2008 AND DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS ENOUGH COATING TO PREVENT CORROSION FROM OCCURRING DUE TO A RECALL. THE VEHICLE IS NOW LEAKING FUEL DURING FILL UPS AND WHEN IT IS TOPPED OFF. A VISUAL IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE PRACTICE OF MEASURING THICKNESS OF A CONVERSION COATING. THE DEALERSHIP VERIFIED THE ISSUE ON OCTOBER 27 2015 AND THE INFINITI CORP WILL NOT HONOR THE RECALL BECAUSE IT DOES NOT WANT TO OPEN THE RECALL. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ISSUE WHEN FUELING THE CAR IT IS SPILLING ON TO THE GROUND AT THE GAS STATION AND COULD IGNITE. THERE IS NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS FUEL FILLER AND A LACK OF PRODUCT TO FIX IT. DUE TO THIS INADEQUATE INSPECTION THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC HAS NOT BEEN ACHIEVED, THE RECALL SHOULD BE REOPENED. RECALL NUMBER: 07V435000 RECALL DATE: 09/18/2007 COMPONENT: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP PROBLEM SUMMARY: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE COATING PROCESS OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COATING MAY HAVE BEEN APPLIED AT THE LOWER MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN OPENING IN THE COATING WHICH CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL OF THE TUBE. CONSEQUENCE: XXX CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
