When retracting our 22' awning, the pin going from the awning tube to the awning motor sheared completely and allowed the awning tube to fall. It remained connected on the other end. If there had been a person sitting under the awning, they most likely have been struck by the awning tube. I had a failure analysis expert inspect the pin and his findings were that the groove in this pin was machined incorrectly and created a stress riser which contributed to the failure. He also stated that the pin should have some type of sleeve that in the event of the failure, would keep the awning tube from dropping. There was no load (wind or water) on the awning at the time of the failure and the pin snapped when the awning was almost completely retracted. I have reported this issue to Lippert Components (awning manufacturer) and Jayco (RV manufacturer). Lippert instructed me to contact Jayco and Jayco instructed me to contact my dealer. I am waiting on our Dealer (Bish's RV) to advise us as to whether or not this will be covered under warranty. The dealer has inspected the awning and is communicating with Jayco. I have requested that all of the failed components be returned to me once the awning is repaired.
