2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Body & structure Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the body or structure system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Body & structure reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

RE: The Power Liftgate Module Malfunction Approximately 45 days ago I began to see water build up inside the well where the liftgate locks. After seeing this twice - after it rained - I was at the dealership for an oil change and asked them to take a look. After review they suspected water intrusion, as there was a recall but not specifically on my VIN. Dealership indicated water tests were needed and I needed to drop my car off for the day or 2. They also indicated to seek your help because of the recall. I couldn't leave my car there that day. On 3/28/26 I did several water tests on the hatchback, using a hose and controlled the flow over the different sections of the hatchback in grid fashion of 6 sections. Each section I sprinkled water like a light rain and then waited 60 mins to see if the water would make it into the lock well. After checking I dried the lock well and then waited another hour to be sure no additional water came into the lock well, before continuing the process over the course of that day and the next. Each time water intruded, entered the inside of the vehicle into the lock well. After conducting research on this issue, the recall stated that this could cause a fire, and not to park the car inside of the garage or near other vehicles. As a result, the hatchback is malfunctioning, it opens and then automatically reverses, and it closes. It will not stay open and is not usable. I'd like to bring it back to the dealership for further testing however, I'd also like to get this resolved in the same visit as I'm sure they will find the same outcome of water intruding causing the electrical issues with the liftgate. Due to it being a fire hazard, I'm afraid to use my vehicle. Can you assist so I don't need to leave my one and only vehicle with the dealership for more than a day or two?

The dashboard has bubbles and is delaminating from the dash. This problem exists in many of the jeeps and a secret service bulletin was issue for only a 6 month period back in December 2019 to June of 2020. Jeep owners were not contacted about this and a recall should be declared for this defective part.

WHILE PARKED THE REAR HATCH HAS RECENTLY STARTED TO GO UP ALMOST ALL THE WAY AND THEN COME BACK DOWN, SOMETIMES VERY FAST OTHER TIMES SLOWLY. IT HIT ME IN THE BACK THE FIRST TIME. I CALLED THE DEALER TO INQUIRE ABOUT RECALL R27 / NHTSA 15V-393, THEY SAID IT WAS NOT LISTED FOR MY VIN, THE VEHICLE WAS BUILT IN 3/14 AND DISPLAYS ALL OF THE ISSUES LISTED IN THAT RECALL.

Crash reported

ON 9/23/20 MY 2014 GRAND JEEP CHEROKEE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN CAUSING ME TO CRASH INTO A FOUNTAIN WALL. I WAS PARKING AND ALMOST AT A COMPLETE STOP WHEN MY CAR WENT HAYWIRE. IT FELT AS IF I GOT HIT FROM BEHIND, MY DASH LIT UP, MY ENGINE REVVED REAL LOUD AND MY CAR LUNGED FORWARD. THERE WAS ENOUGH FORCE TO LIFT MY FRONT END AND PLACE IT ON THE 2ND TIER OF THE FOUNTAIN WALL. I WAS IN A TIGHT PARKING AREA AT THE HIALEAH GARDENS BUILDING DEPARTMENT. PLEASE GOOGLE EARTH THE PARKING LOT TO UNDERSTAND THE PARKING LOT AND HOW COMPACT IT IS. I HAD AN INVESTIGATION DONE ON MY CAR AND RECEIVED A VERY GENERIC RESPONSE VIA EMAIL REGARDING THE FINDINGS AND THAT CHRYSLER / JEEP WERE NOT LED TO BELIEVE THAT THE INCIDENT WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURING RESPONSIBILITY. NOT ONE PERSON HAS CALLED ME TO DISCUSS. JEEP IS VERY LUCKY MY KIDS WERE NOT IN THE CAR AND THAT I DIDN'T KILL ANYONE OR MYSELF. CUSTOMER CARE HAS BEEN A JOKE. THEY TOLD ME THAT I CAN REQUEST CALL BACKS BUT IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. I HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT THE INVESTIGATION SHOWED ON MY CAR. MY CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN! I CANNOT GET ANY RESPONSE FROM THE CHRYSLER / JEEP ON THE INVESTIGATION OF THE LITTLE BLACK BOX AND HOW THEY CAME UP WITH THEIR DECISION. I BELIEVE THEY SEND THESE GENERIC EMAILS OUT TO SHUT YOU UP AND HOPE NOTHING FURTHER COMES ABOUT. THEY KNOW WE HAVE NO MEANS OF TALKING TO ANYONE AND GET AWAY WITH HAVING DEFAULTED SUV'S. THEY GET AWAY WITH LYING AND BEING UNOBTAINABLE. I HAVE ADDITIONAL PICTURES IF YOU NEED TO SEE THEM

COWL PANEL TRIM IS CRUMBLING AND CAUSES A 'BEE HUMMING' NOISE WHEN VEHICLE REACHES 55 MPH OR MORE. VERY ANNOYING AND DROWNS OUT RADIO/MUSIC. WAS TOLD BY DEALER THAT THEY CAN TAPE IT DOWN BUT THE STRIP CRUMBLES WHEN YOU TOUCH IT. ATTEMPTED TO USE A BONDING SUBSTANCE RECOMMENDED BY PART STORE; STILL CRUMBLES WHEN TOUCHED.

IN MY 30 YEARS OF OWNING MANY DIFFERENT VEHICLES, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCE DOOR POPPING. ALL MY HINGES UPPER AND LOWER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ON MY 2014 GRAND JEEP CHEROKEE LIMITED 4X4. FROM MY RESEARCH, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT MANY JEEP OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT AND ARE LEFT IN DISAPPOINTMENT AS I AM CURRENTLY. THERE IS NO RECALL OR TSB ON FILE WHICH IS MIND-BLOWING CONSIDERING THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IF IT WAS ONE DOOR, I COULD SAY, OK UNDERSTANDABLE 'THINGS HAPPEN. BUT ALL 4 OF MY DOOR HINGES UPPER AND LOWER NEED TO BE REPLACED BE CAUSE ALL MY DOOR POP. JEEP MANUFACTURE HAS DECIDED TO STICK THEIR HEAD IN THE SAND AND IGNORE THE COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE

I HAVE OWNED 5 JEEP CHEROKEES AND THIS HAS TO BE A LEMON.I PURCHASES IT NEW. I HAVE HAD MANY MANY RECALLS, MOST MAJOR. RECENTLY I HEARD WATER SPLASHING UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT, WHICH RESULTED IN WATER COMING INTO THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOODING THE CARPET. I WAS TOLD THAT THE BOX HOLDING THE BATTERY WAS WHERE THE WATER WAS LOCATED. THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR TWO DAYS AND CAN NOT FIND WHERE THE WATER IS ENTERING. NOW THEY ARE PREPARING TO REMOVE THE TRIM FOR A POSSIBLE LOCATION. THEY CHECKED WITH MY EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY AND THEY SAID THIS WAS NOT COVERED. I AM AFRAID THIS ISSUE WILL CAUSE A FIRE IN THE VEHICLE SINCE THE WATER IS ENTERING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. I WAS TOLD NO RECALL FROM CHRYSLER ADDRESSES THIS MAJOR ISSUE WITH JEEPS, EVEN THOUGH IS IS COMMON. I AM AFRAID TO LOOK AT MY BILL IF THEY EVER FIND THE LEAK. WE HAVE BEEN HAVING MAJOR RAIN HERE IN GEORGIA THIS YEAR AND IT IS NOT USED VERY MUCH, SO IT WAS STATIONARY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS A VERY DIFFICULT TASK TO FIND WHERE THE WATER WAS ENTERING THE VEHICLE, AND THEY HAD MANY JEEP VEHICLES WITH SIMILAR ISSUES. I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN I CAN GET MY VEHICLE BACK. I CANNOT UPLOAD PHOTOS AS THEY HAVE THE VEHICLE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LEATHER ON THE DASHBOARD WAS STARTING TO BUBBLE. THE ADHESIVE WAS NOT HOLDING THE MATERIAL PROPERLY. THERE WERE NO CRACKS IN THE DASHBOARD AND THERE WERE NO AIR BAG INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE SEPARATION OF THE LEATHER ON THE DASHBOARD CREATED A GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD, WHICH OBSTRUCTED THE CONTACT'S VISION WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SCHLOSSMANN DODGE CITY CHRYSLER JEEP RAM FIAT (19100 W CAPITOL DR, BROOKFIELD, WI 53045, (262) 790-9000) WHO STATED THAT THEY DID NOT SEE A RECALL AND ADVISED HIM TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND RESTATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

THE CHROME TRIM AROUND THE CUP HOLDER ON THE CENTER CONSOLE IS DE-LAMINATING FROM THE PLASTIC AND HAS CREATED A SHARP AS A RAZOR EDGE ON THE CUP HOLDER WHEN YOU MUST INSERT YOUR FINGERS AND OR HAD TO GRAB YOUR BEVERAGE WHILE DRIVING. THE CUT THAT I GOT WAS QUITE PAINFUL, AND IF TRAFFIC WAS WORSE I COULD HAVE BEEN DISTRACTED ENOUGH BY THE PAIN TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. I CALLED JEEP CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY DID NOT CARE. 34K MILES ON A 50K VEHICLE AND IT IS FALLING APART.

SUNROOF HAS FAILED 6 TIMES AND IS NOW READY FOR IT'S 7TH REPAIR. THE SUNROOF'S AUTOMATIC FUNCTIONS STOP WORKING SO WHEN IT FAILS YOU HAVE TO PUSH THE CLOSE BUTTON REPEATEDLY WHILE THE SUNROOF MOVES MAYBE 1/4" ON EACH DEPRESSION OF THE BUTTON. THE DEALER REPLACED THE MOTOR ONCE AND FOR THE OTHER 4 TIMES I WAS TOLD IT NEEDED TO BE CALIBRATED. THE LAST SUNROOF FAILURE THEY WENT IN AND WENT THROUGH ALL OF THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS AND SAID THEY FOUND SOME ELECTRICAL WIRING PROBLEMS AND FIXED THEM. THE SUNROOF FAILED AGAIN 2 WEEKS LATER. THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT, DUE TO ANOTHER ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR ISSUE. THE ELECTRONICS IN THE VEHICLE MALFUNCTIONS REGULARLY WHICH AFFECT THE RADIO CONTROLS, NAVIGATION, CENTRAL LOCKING, PHONE, AND I GET RANDOM ERRONEOUS ERRORS ON THE DASH DISPLAY. THE RADIO/NAVIGATION UNITS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE NAVIGATION SCREEN LOCKS UP BUT THE VOICE WILL CONTINUE TO GIVE YOU VERBAL INSTRUCTIONS. IF YOU MANUALLY LOCK THE VEHICLE AND START WALKING AWAY THE HORN WILL BEEP TWICE AND THE VEHICLE WILL UNLOCK LIKE THE KEYS HAVE BEEN LOCKED IN THE CAR, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE IN YOUR HAND. I WAS TOLD YOU CANNOT USE THE LOCK BUTTONS ON YOUR DOOR TO LOCK THE VEHICLE. WHEN YOU WALK UP TO THE CAR AND GRAB THE DOOR HANDLE TO UNLOCK THE CAR IT FAILS, AND YOU HAVE TO GRAB THE DOOR HANDLE ALL OVER REPEATEDLY TO GET IT TO UNLOCK. THE DASH DISPLAY WILL GIVE FALSE MESSAGES WHILE DRIVING LIKE ALREADY IN DESIRED GEAR AND NO ONE HAS TOUCHED THE SHIFTER. THE VOICE WILL COME ON RANDOMLY AND ASK YOU WHAT NUMBER YOU WANT TO CALL, AGAIN NO BUTTONS NOR THE DISPLAY HAVE BEEN TOUCHED. ERROR ON DISPLAY MEMORY SYSTEM, THE PROGRAMMED SEAT SWITCHES WERE REPLACED. TRANSMISSION ISSUE, THE MODULE WAS REPLACED. REAR HATCH FAILURE, FINALLY SWITCH WAS REPLACED. REAR TAIL LIGHT LENS REPLACED AS IT WAS FULL OF WATER. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, FAULTY OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. ENGINE VIBRATION, BAD AC COMP.
