2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Exterior lighting Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the exterior lighting system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Exterior lighting reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at night, it was difficult to see the roadway clearly. The contact stated that she had issues with cataracts and attributed the lack of illumination on the road to her condition. The contact stated that she avoided driving at night until she had to attend an event at night and asked her son to drive. The contact’s son also witnessed the lack of illumination on the roadway from the headlights. The contact stated that after returning to the residence, the contact’s son parked the vehicle facing a wall, and both observed that the passenger’s side headlamp was illuminating the driveway directly below and in front of the vehicle, and the driver's side headlight was illuminating the trees. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer, and the headlight assemblies were taken apart and then reinstalled and recalibrated. The contact stated that the dealer was unable to repair the headlights and stated that there was a fault in the headlamp assemblies that could not be repaired. The contact stated that the same dealer had replaced both headlamps in 2019 due to a failure to operate as needed. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,875.

Turn signal malfunction. Right turn signal will not reset. Vehicle indicates a continuous right turn signal when in operation. Have had at least two instances where traffic has pulled out in front of me assuming I was intending to make a right turn. Dealer has diagnosed the problem to be a defective AIR BAG CLOCKSPRING (Jeep part number 1NJ70DX9AI). Copy of dealer inspection and repair report attached

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the contact became aware that the headlights illumination was very dim. The contact checked to verify that the headlight was in the on position. The contact stated the high beam was activated and the vehicle then lost headlights functionality temporarily before regaining headlights functionality. On another occasion, she drove over a speed bump and the high beam headlights turned on independently. The vehicle was taking to the dealer several times but no cause for the failure was found. The manufacturer was contacted and a complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 59,000. The contact stated that the solution was to replace the headlight bulbs and repairs have been made.

Over the course of several years' use, the OEM HID headlights lenses have been burnt by the OEM headlights which has incrementally diminished the headlight effectiveness. There is a frost like haze that has been burnt into the interior of the lens. This should be covered by the manufacturer given that the headlight cover lenses used on the headlight assembly were not adequate. I have experienced this diminishing visibility over the last several years, but it has reached a point now that it is a safety concern while driving at night.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the driver’s side headlight had become defective while in operation. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer where he had both headlights replaced. After the repair, the new headlights were not adjusted to the proper calibration and the headlight would only illuminate on the side of each headlight and not forward as needed. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer on numerous occasions and was informed that the new headlights could only illuminate vertically and not horizontally as needed. The contact then called Larry H. Miller Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Riverdale (1481 W Riverdale Rd, Riverdale, UT 84405) to schedule an appointment to attempt to correct the failure. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

HID headlight bulbs were replaced by dealer. Upon return of the vehicle I tested the light pattern at night on an unlit road and the results were not stellar. There are 2 noticeable dark areas on the roadway imparting vision and clarity of the roadway. Returned to dealer and let them drive the car at night. They told me that there are two dark areas in the light pattern and that they are caused by “burns” on the inside of both headlight lens. I was informed that they need replacement to the tune of $1300.00 each. The service manger informed me that he could try to disassemble the headlight housing and “polish” the lens with no promise of success. The area of the lens causing the distortion is directly in front of the projector portion of the housing. To me it appears to be a design or material selection issue. Also interesting is that the areas of distortion look differently in each lens, the passenger side is cloudy, whereas the driver’s is granular. Pictures are difficult to take but my best effort are included.

SINCE I PURCHASED MY JEEP IN 2014, I HAVE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE HEADLIGHTS. IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE AT NIGHT, AS THE HEADLIGHTS, EVEN ON BRIGHT ARE NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH TO DRIVE. I MUST USE MY BRIGHT LIGHTS THE ENTIRE TIME WHEN I HAVE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND I HAVE MENTIONED IT TO THE DEALER WHENEVER I HAVE TO TAKE MY CAR IN. I'VE READ SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM. I WAS CONSIDERING PURCHASING ANOTHER JEEP, BUT I'M AFRAID THIS PROBLEM WILL ON ANY OTHER ONE I MAY BUY. IF I AM INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, I WANT TO BE ON RECORD ABOUT THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE.

FCA UCONNECT SENDING FORCED UPDATES TO CERTAIN VEHICLES WITH UCONNECT SYSTEMS ONBOARD (SATELLITE SIGNAL SENT DIRECTLY TO VEHICLE). A KNOWN ISSUE BY FCA, IS THAT THE FORCED UPDATE FAILS DURING THE UPDATE RENDERING CERTAIN FEATURES USELESS. IN MY ENCOUNTER THE SYSTEM UPDATE FAILED AND MOST ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL SUCH AS DEFROSTER, CONTROL OF THE POWER SEATS, THE VEHICLES LIGHTING SYSTEMS AMONG OTHER SYSTEMS. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND FCA IS AWARE OF THIS FAILURE YET THEY HAVE FAILED TO NOTIFY CONSUMERS OF SUCH FAILURE AND HOW IT COULD ADVERSELY EFFECT THEIR CONTROL AND ACCESS TO FUNCTION OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE IN OPERATION.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A BURNING ODOR DETECTED FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE HEADLAMPS WERE OVERHEATING. IN ADDITION, THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT FAILED TO ILLUMINATE AND WAS BURNED OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FRED BEANS CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM (858 N EASTON RD, DOYLESTOWN, PA 18902, (215) 348-7500) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THERE WERE MARKINGS ON THE COVERS IN FRONT OF THE BULBS ON EACH HEADLAMP. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT AN UNKNOWN HEADLAMP UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000.

LITHIA CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM OF CONCORD (4901 MARSH DR, CONCORD, CA 94520, (925) 246-2295) RETAINED THE VEHICLE FOR OVER THREE WEEKS BECAUSE THE PART FOR THE HEAD LAMPS WAS ON BACKORDER. WHILE DRIVING MY 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE ONE MORNING WHILE IT WAS STILL DARK I NOTICED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE HEAD LIGHT WENT OUT AND CAME BACK ON INTERMITTENTLY. THE NEXT MORNING I TRIED AGAIN AND ALL THE LIGHTS WENT IN AND OUT COMPLETELY. PROVIDING A VERY DANGEROUS SATIATION NOT ONLY TO ME BUT OTHER DRIVER'S. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER (HAD TO WAIT ONE WEEK TO GET IT IN TO SERVICE). THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND SAID THEY NEEDED TO ORDER A PART AND GAVE THE JEEP BACK AND WOULD CALL WHEN THEY HAD THE PART. WHEN WE TOOK IT BACK FOR THE REPAIRS THEY KEPT THE JEEP FOR THREE WEEKS TRYING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. SAYING THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE FIX AFTER CHRYSLER TOLD THEM TO CHANGE A PART IN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM. WHEN THAT DID NOT WORK THEY CONTACTED CHRYSLER AND GOT A TECHNICIAN WHO ADVISE THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER CHANGE OUT THE HEADLIGHTS AND CHARGED US $917.88 FOR THE REPAIRS SAYING IT WAS NOT COVERED BY MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. I TRULY BELIEVE THIS IS A CHRYSLER PROBLEM WITH ELECTRICAL ISSUES, WIRING OR COMPUTERS AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY CHRYSLER NOT BY INDIVIDUAL OWNERS. THIS IS SUBSTANTIATED BY ALL THE COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM.

EXACTLY FOUR YEARS AGO I PURCHASED A NEW JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED. I ALSO PURCHASED THE LUXURY LL GROUP WHICH INCLUDES BI-XENON HID HEADLIGHTS. I NOW HAVE A HEADLIGHT BURNT OUT AND THE DEALER INSIST ITS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I HAVE SPOKEN TO NUMEROUS GRAND CHEROKEE OWNERS AND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH A PRICE TAG OF OVER $400.00 TO REPLACE. THERE WILL BE MANY JEEPS DRIVING AROUND WITH ONLY ONE HEADLIGHT BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE.

LICENSE PLATE LAMPS CEASED FUNCTIONING. OBVIOUS SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE HEAT BEING GENERATED. ORIGINAL REPLACEMENT LAMPS ARE DISCONTINUED. MANUFACTURER STATES THAT I HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW WIRING HARNESS AND LAMPS FOR AROUND $260 FOR PARTS ONLY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN DEFECT AS THE ORIGINAL LAMPS HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED AND THE MANUFACTURER HAS REDESIGNED THE LAMPS AND HARNESS. ILLUMINATION OF THE LICENSE IS REQUIRED AND THE CONSUMER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT TO FIX THEIR DESIGN PROBLEM. THIS COULD BE A FIRE HAZARD IF THE ORIGINAL LAMPS HEAT UP. I HAVE ATTACHED A PHOTO SHOWING THE DARK BURN MARKS IN THE ORIGINAL LAMPS
