Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

Component Structure: Equipment Summary: While driving when the weather is raining the water is dripping inside the SUV. A leaking, separating roof/windshield on the Range Rover often indicates a faulty windshield seal or, more commonly, clogged/disconnected sunroof so it appears to be separating parts or removing the glue. At this point its a matter of time there will be a separation or gap between the windshield and the roof and it will be unsafe and a disaster. I am the owner of a 2017 Range Rover Evoque (VIN: [XXX] ) purchased from Star Auto Works in March 2025 with approximately 56,000 miles. Within months of purchase, the vehicle suffered a catastrophic turbocharger failure, a critical powertrain component that renders the vehicle unreliable and potentially unsafe to operate. A turbocharger is engineered to last significantly longer than the mileage at failure. This type of premature breakdown strongly indicates a manufacturing defect rather than normal wear. As such, the circumstances raise substantial concerns regarding: Breach of the Implied Warranty of Merchantability — The vehicle was not reasonably fit for its ordinary purpose at the time of sale. Breach of Manufacturer Warranty Obligations — A failure of this magnitude warrants immediate manufacturer participation. Sale of a Vehicle Containing a Likely Pre-Existing Defect — The timing of the failure supports the conclusion that the condition existed prior to my purchase. I have made good-faith efforts to resolve this matter cooperatively. However, the financial burden of a major engine repair resulting from a premature failure is not one I am willing to absorb. Noticed a fuel odor around the vehicle. Then it started to smell in the cabin also. I took it in to the dealership and the fuel flange has a leak and needs to be replaced.

My vehicle has a push button to start the vehicle, the gear shift suppose to rise upward from the console in order to turn for you proceed to travel and it never comes up. Making you stranded wherever you are. This has caused a great amount of stress. Having to call road side assistance, and waiting hours to get help, this feature on the 2017 Range Rover need great support and attention.

The contact owns a 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed through an intersection, another vehicle ran the red light, causing the contact's vehicle to collide head-on with the other vehicle's passenger side. The air bags did not deploy. The contact suffered minor injuries but did not receive medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was first towed to an unknown dealer, then to a body shop, where unknown repairs were made. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

The timing chain went out, and it is a common problem with this same make and model of vehicle, and no recall has been issued. My safety was at risk because my car showed no warnings of breaking down, it was well maintained, and there was a manufacturing error that caused me to suddenly lose all power on a highway. I couldn’t make it to a safe area to pull over, and was stuck on the side of the highway for hours not understand why my car was not running

At just a little over 58k miles the vehicle started making metal noises while driving. The vehicle will jump into neutral while driving and this was very scary! There are no warning lights or any error codes. This was checked and confirmed by a LandRover dealership in Roanoke- no fault codes. I didnt drive for another few months. Next drive was from VA to KY and the vehicle did the same thing on the highway, I was able to pull over after having a panic attack and almost being hit by other vehicles that were moving! I didnt drive it for another few months. Drove the vehicle 3 weeks ago, the noises and the shift in neutral happened again and I had to pull off the side of the road. This time gearbox fault light came on. This is very scary, this vehicle should be high tech enough to show error codes or warning lights and absolutley nothing from diagnostic check. Now, I am nowhere close to a land rover dealership, called the manufacturer several times about recalls and or problems. I was brushed off and told there is nothing they can do. This is not only frustrating: This is dangerous! I had my family in this car and we could have been in a terrible accident due to no warning. The local mechanic still shows no stored error codes or issues. This is a danger and I have found this same issue in many forums. This should be a recall and the manufacturer should stand behind their work.

A few months ago, started smelling faint fuel, the smell gradually increased. Took it to Land Rover dealership was told there was a problem with fuel tank fiange and gasket that sits on top of the gas tank. Was advised there was a recall for the same problem on other models but not mine. Due to the nature of potential hazard (fire, explosion), I wanted to make sure this was documented.
