Safety investigations
NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
Trailer Hitch Receiver Structure May Crack and Separate
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Preliminary Evaluation, PE24023, on August 14, 2024, to investigate allegations of Thor Motor Coach motorhome frame or trailer hitch structure cracking and separating. The hitch was manufactured by Lippert and installed by Thor as standard original equipment. ODI received eight Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) describing the hitch structure cracking. If not caught in time, a cracked hitch can fully fracture and separate from the vehicle. ODI sent information requests to Thor and Lippert on September 6, 2024 and September 27, 2024, respectively. Thor's full response was received October 31, 2024, and Lippert's full response was received December 6, 2024. ODI reviewed the responses and learned of improvements introduced to increase the overall strength of the system. The manufacturers reported 32 total incidents, and ODI is aware of 37 non-duplicative subject vehicle incidents in total, including four crash incidents where the towed vehicle separated and struck a roadside feature. The overall failure rate for all subject vehicles is low, and ODI isnot aware of any failures on vehicles produced in the last 30 months. Although a defect has not been identified, the manufacturers understand the seriousness of a potential hitch receiver structure failure. As a result, Thor, supported by Lippert, is conducting a customer satisfaction campaign that instructs consumers to inspect their hitch structure and informs what to look for and what to do if issues are found. If consumers areuncomfortable performing this inspection, Thor dealers can inspect the trailer hitch for them. The inspection and repair will be done at no expense to the consumer. ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) with this manufacturer action. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. Trimark 060-1650 Door Latch Failures
On November 23, 2020, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE20021 to investigate allegations of inoperative Trimark THP 060-1650 door lock/latches originally equipped on model years (MY) 2015-2017 Class A and Class C motorhomes.ODI received forty-six Vehicle Owner’s Questionnaires (VOQs) describing consumers being locked in or out of their vehicles. The door latch, containing a die-cast zinc plunger, was produced by Equality during calendar years 2014-2016. The die-cast may become porous and brittle over time and can break without warning, causing the vehicle owner to be unable to open the recreational vehicle door equipped with the latch. If the motorhome does not have any other doors such as some Class A models, occupants could be trapped inside, needing to climb out using the emergency exits. If locked out, owners would be unable to easily get in and retrieve children and pets. ODI analyzed the data provided by Trimark in response to its January 27, 2021 information request letter.Although an elevated failure rate was evident on a specific combination of plunger bolt, door lock/latch assembly and door, the data showed that most failures occurred within the first two years of service on the affected 2015-2017 vehicles. This data suggests that component failures generally would have already occurred.Further, ODI data reflects a downward trend in complaints after calendar year 2018 and for post- MY 2016 vehicles. This downward trend may be attributed Trimark's actions in 2016 such as changes in the manufacturing process of its zinc plunger component for the relevant population and its 2016 decision to switch to a steel plunger. In view of the nature of early-life failure, and failure rate trending downward for model years 2017 and newer, this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
Recent owner complaints
Reports submitted to NHTSA, shown in the owner's own words
The rear frame that the trailer hitch is attached to has cracked and trailer hitch began to fail.the hitch metal also cracked and the hitch started to fall down, dropping the front of the trailer.if the trailer hitch dropped of completely, the safety devices of the trailer would not have worked. Since the safety chains and emergency brake cable are attached to the hitch, the trailer would be free wheeling down the highway. This would then probably hit another vehicle possibly causing injury or death. The is a Lippert brand hitch. Tag on hitch states 8000 GVW and 500 lb tongue weight. Trailer was less than 4000lbs. And less then 500 tongue weight.

Manufacturer communications
A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.
Thor Motor Coach (TMC) has been made aware of several incidents involving trailer hitch receivers installed on motorhomes, similar to yours. These issues were caused by the use of drop hitches and hitch extensions that placed higher-than-expected forces on the hitch receiver assembly. If you use your motorhome to tow, please follow the recommended instructions in your owner’s manual. THE USE OF DROP HITCHES AND/OR HITCH EXTENSIONS WHILE TOWING WILL PLACE LARGER STRESSES ON THE HITCH AND CAN LEAD TO FAILURE. TMC is requesting that you inspect your motorhome’s hitch receiver at your earliest convenience. Inspection instructions are enclosed with this letter. If you are unable or uncomfortable performing this inspection, contact your nearest TMC authorized dealer and they will inspect the trailer hitch for you. If any issues are found with your hitch or the mounting surfaces, please contact TMC Customer Service at 877-855-2867. TMC will coordinate and direct you to the nearest TMC authorized dealer for inspection and repair. The inspection and repair will be done at no expense to you.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
Compare model years
Complaint and recall counts across every year of this model
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
