2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Visibility Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the visibility system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Visibility reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

. I bought this truck for my husband as a birthday present & it has been a nightmare. My husband is a [XXX] & I wanted a vehicle that he would be comfortable in to take him to his numerous medical appointments. The first indication was the check engine light came on. I took to to O'Reillys & they scanned the vehicle & no issue was detected. I then had several instances where the vehicle would not start & one instance when it would not go into reverse & the truck was making a noise from the underbody. The windshield washer unit also was not working. I then took it back to the Ford dealership where it was purchased. They ran a scan at the dealership & said there was nothing wrong. They then indicated that I should take it to a Chevy dealer which I did. They stated that Chevy has a special scan that the previous scans cannot access. I documented all the issues and the Chevy dealership found 8 issues including the transmission, holes in the struts, software issues, washer pump, grille shutter & loose battery cables. The Ford dealership agreed to fix the struts & the washer pump as well as the diagnostic testing. I thought we were going to be able to resolve the transmission and the grille shutter issue but that has not happened. The defective grille shutter is what is activating the check engine light. The Ford dealership charged me for fixing the battery cables and yet they were needed to be done again. They also told me that the grille shutter was not necessary as I could drive with it but I would never know when I had an actual problem. They wanted to replace the torque converter. I submitted a request to Carvana & they offered me 5,000 and I paid double that plus. I don't feel safe driving the vehicle and GM is well aware of the issues with this make and Model. Let's not wait until someone is killed or hurt before action is taken. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The back windshield on my Silverado leaks water every time it rains causing the back window to smell of smoke like electrical burning. It also creates a visibility issue out the back window when I've called three different dealerships in the area and each one of them say it is a known issue with this vehicle and it's going to cost almost $3,000 to fix. I have contacted GMC only for them to say that I needed to contact this department I feel like this is a safety issue that GMC should have to help their customers with not just be like oh well your truck may or may not be on fire while it rains

Sliding rear window leaks in 3 spots. Leak poses the safety risk of mold growth inside the vehicle along with the potential of water getting inside of electrical components and air bag device compartments. The problem was reproduced and confirmed at the dealership, to which the plastic seal at the top of the rear window was confirmed to have failed in 3 locations. Dealership recommended replacing the entire back window and assembly with what they believe to be the same window assembly that failed. The only inspection completed on the vehicle to date has been the dealership GM certified technicians. Musty smell after rain and observed staining on the headliner is when the issue was first identified.

Rear sliding glass on 19’ + model silverados. Water has entered into the cabin specifically to the left back passenger side. My vehicle to include multiple other people across the nation have been effected by this also. Specifically to mine, water has entered and stained the interior cabin panel. This is a safety/health concern to people experiencing this as it can cause asthmatic individuals and immuno compromised personnel to get deathly ill. I have my babies ride back there and it concerns me that they will get sick due to the negligence of GM not wanting to correct the issue to standard. The answer to the problem is a reseal, however, when that seal does not hold due to faulty back panel glass it is now your obligation to pay for a whole new back panel. Chevrolet has resealed the issue but I have also reached back out to them with no response due to the window not being aligned and portions of the seal being exposed to the weather.

My vehicle has a rear window leak. The dealer looked at it and said this is a common problem with the new body styles. Dealer confirmed it is a crack in window seal and window frame. Although there isn’t any immediate safety issues. There may be long term including mold that passengers will breathe in and also the water leaks down window on the interior and creates streaks and hard to see through rear window if not cleaned often. GM knows about this issue and has released a technical service bulletin (Chevrolet TSB 18-NA-383)

Today March 25 2022 around 07:20 driving to work, the passenger side stationary panel of a 3 panel sliding window exploded with a loud noise. The window is totally shattered, but stayed in place. Little cubed glass is starting to fall from around the bottom edge. A month ago, I had experienced a crackling arcing sound coming from the defrost on that same panel. I took it into Quirk Chevrolet, Manchester NH to have it looked at. they stopped the arcing and released the vehicle back to me and fixed under "service bulletin". I am finding many other individuals experiencing this same exploding glass issue. There is a bulletin out concerning this particular model and yr truck for sliding glass window defroster overheating issues. I am hearing that the dealer is not addressing this as an issue and not remedying this under warranty. I have only 28500 miles on the truck.

REAR VIEW CAMERA ON MY 2019 SILVERADO WT GOES IN AND OUT WHEN IN REVERSE. IT PUTS SEVERAL LINES WHICH CREATING A FUZZY VIEW ON THE SCREEN. THE PICTURE ON THE SCREEN PREVENTS A CLEAR PICTURE OF WHAT'S GOING ON. WHEN THE BREAKS ARE APPLIED THE IMAGE CLEARS UP AND ONCE THE BREAKS ARE RELEASE THE FUZZY IMAGE RETURNS.ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP GM IS WORKING TO FIX THE PROBLEM BUT HAS NOT COME UP WITH A SOLUTION. AFTER READING SEVERAL FORUMS SEVERAL OTHER CUSTOMERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. MY KIDS DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND THIS IS MAJOR CONCERN

WHEN PLACING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND WATCHING THE REAR VIEW CAMERA, WHILE IN MOTION, AS YOU GET CLOSER TO AN OBJECT THE CAMERA WILL GO BLACK FOR A FEW SECONDS, DISTURBING THE DRIVERS IMMEDIATE VIEW OF ANYTHING BEHIND THEM AND NOT VIEWABLE BY THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. THIS PRESENTS THE POSSIBLY OF CRASHING INTO AN OBJECT BEHIND YOU UNEXPECTEDLY AND UNKNOWINGLY; WHETHER IT BE REVERSING IN A PARKING LOT OR INTO A SPOT NEAR OTHERS PERSONAL PROPERTY. IT HAS HAPPENED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION.

I BOUGHT A NEW 2019 CHEVY SILVERADO AT THE END OF 2019. THE BACKUP CAMERA FLICKERS AND CUTS OUT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THERE IS NO SOLUTION FOR IT. THIS CANNOT BE THE RIGHT ANSWER. I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN AND WITH A LARGE TRUCK I DEPEND ON THE CAMERA WORKING. ALSO WITH PARKING I HAVE COME CLOSE TO DAMAGING THE TRUCK.

WHEN THE BACK UP CAMERA IS ACTIVATED BY BEING PUT IN REVERSE IT IS SO BRIGHT THAT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE OUT THE PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR AT NIGHT. THIS IS A NON HD MONITOR AND THERE IS NO WAY TO ADJUST BRIGHTNESS OR TO TURN OFF THER SCREEN. IT COULD RESULT IN SCRAPING THE SIDE OF THE TRUCK OR HITTING SOMETHING. BACK UP CAMERAS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A REPLACEMENT FOR MIRRORS

WHEN THE TRUCK IS IN REVERSE AT NIGHT, THE DATA SYSTEM ON THE DASHBOARD SHINES TOO BRIGHTLY AND MAKES IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO USE. YOU CANNOT LOOK ACROSS THE TRUCK TO USE YOUR PASSENGER SIDEVIEW MIRROR, NOR USE YOUR REARVIEW MIRROR. THIS CAUSED ME TO BACK OVER A MAILBOX, AND HAD CAUSED A FEW NEAR- MISSES WHILE BACKING AT NIGHT. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO.

REAR CAMERA WAY TOO BRIGHT. GOING INTO REVERSE GEAR, THE REAR CAMERA GOES TO FULL BRIGHTNESS AND MAKES SEEING OUTSIDE OF THE CAR NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE AND VERY DANGEROUS. THE CAMERA NEEDS TO EITHER A) HAVE THE ABILITY TO TURN DOWN BRIGHTNESS OR B) SET AT A LOWER LEVEL OF BRIGHTNESS CONSISTENT WITH SEEING OUTSIDE IN THE DARK.

THE CHROME SURROUNDING THE AIR VENTS CAN REFLECT THE SUN IN A MANNER THAT BLINDS THE DRIVER. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WHEN DRIVING NORTH IN THE AFTERNOON. IT FORCES ME TO LOOK AWAY FROM THE ROAD, AND CAUSES IMPRINTING IN MY VISION, WHICH REDUCES MY ABILITY TO SEE WHEN DRIVING.
