Frame/Body Structure Corrosion
In their Defect Information Report (DIR) of April 20, 2011, Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified NHTSA that it would conduct a safety recall of certain 1996-2004 Nissan Pathfinder and 1997-2003 Infinity QX4 vehicles to repair corrosion damage to the driver's side front strut tower.The vehicles included in the recall are those that were originally sold, or are currently registered in salt belt states including Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.The DIR states in part, ...the strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly.This could lead to the strut housing panel separating and contacting the steering column lower shaft.Contact with the steering column lower shaft can cause steering difficulties and may require an increase in steering effort by the driver.If the steering column lower shaft completely fractured it would result in a total loss of steering control.In some cases, the strut housing panel can contact or affect adjacent brake system components.Complainants reported experiencing either steering or brake system issues, and in some cases, both.Nissan dealer's will inspect the strut housing and, based on the level of corrosion found, make an assessment as to how to remedy the vehicle (see defect information report for additional details). Brake system components adjacent to, and in the area of, the strut tower (i.e., brake master cylinder, left front brake line, ABS wire harness, etc.) will also be inspected.

1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE FIRE DUE TO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION. *LD THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS FUELED AN HOUR BEFORE THE FIRE AND SMELLED GAS. THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAUGHT FIRE. NISSAN DECLINED TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE VEHICLE BEING OUT OF WARRANTY FOR 19 YEARS AND NO RECENT MAINTENANCE PERFORMED AT THE DEALER.*JS

WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT WITH STEERING WHEEL THERE IS A QUARTER OF A TURN BEFORE THE VEHICLE STARTS TO TURN AND WHEN TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY THIS CAUSES ME TO DRIFT INTO OTHER LANES . TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE STRUT TOWER BRACE WAS SEVERELY RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BYRELY NISSAN (4027 DIXIE HIGHWAY, LOUISVILLE, KY 40216) WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE VIN WAS OLD AND NO LONGER IN THE SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000. THE CONSUMER DID NOT RECIEVE THE RECALL #11V244000 NOTICE. THE VEHICLE BEGAN MAKING A GRINDING NOISE AND BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING RUSTED AND BROKE LOOSE, AND IS RUBBING AGAINST THE STEERING COLUMN. *JS

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS EXTENSIVE RUST AND CORROSION NEAR THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE ASSOCIATED WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE STRUT HOUSING. IN ADDITION, THERE HAD BEEN RUST PROGRESSING OVER TIME ON THE UNDERBODY/FRAMING. THE DEALER (MOUNT HOLLY NISSAN, 1513 NJ-38, HAINESPORT, NJ 08036, (609) 267-2886) INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 11V244000 (STEERING, SUSPENSION) IN 2011. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING COULD CRACK AND CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE CONCERNING THE SUSPENSION AND STEERING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE. **TR CONSUMER STATED THE RUST PROBLEM ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED BY THE RECALL - OBVOUSLY NOT THE CASE. NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 11V-244 RECALL, MANUFACTURER RECALL NUMBER: R1108. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE WHICH WAS IN SEATTLE WA. I LIVE IN ILLINOIS AND TOOK THIS CAR YESTERDAY TO ANDERSON NISSAN IN ROCKFORD, IL FOR THE OPEN RECALL. I WAS TOLD THAT THEIR INSPECTION SHOWED NO RUST AND DUE TO THE LIFE OF THIS CAR, NO FURTHER ACTION WILL BE TAKEN ON THIS RECALL. MY CONCERN IS THAT NOW THAT THIS CAR WILL BE EXPOSED TO SNOW AND SALT, IT WILL RUST!! THIS CAR IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND I HOPE TO GET MANY MORE YEARS OUT OF IT (ODOMETER IS 152,500 MILES). I CONTACTED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS, CASE# 24193883, WHO SAID THAT MY REQUEST TO REMEDY THE STRUT HOUSING (I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE FIX IS REMOVE RUST AND THEN APPLY PAINT) WILL BE REFERRED TO THEIR REGIONAL OFFICE. WHAT RECOURSE DO I HAVE ON THIS ISSUE?

12 VOLT BATTERY TESTING FOR IN-SERVICE VEHICLES SERVICE INFORMATION The following Service Information lists NNA procedural recommendations for establishing good connections while performing 12V battery testing. These recommendations are expected to promote uniformity during the connection process, therefore reducing the number of incorrect âTest with DCAâ and âReplaceâ results. HINT: If 12 volt batteries are allowed to discharge for a prolonged period of time, battery life may be drastically reduced. This condition may lead to premature battery replacement and customer dissatisfaction. IMPORTANT: ï· CPX-900 is now an accepted testing tool to use along with or in place of the DSS-5000 ï· CPX-900 operating instructions are found at: https://nissancpx900.midtronics.com/ ï· DSS-5000 operating instructions are found at: https://nissandss5000.midtronics.com/ ï· DCA-8000 is now a required testing tool to be used for all warranty replacement decisions. The DCA-8000 is also a more efficient charger than previously available, and will charge any available 12 volt lead acid battery safely and accurately as long as all precautions and inputs are made correctly. SILICONE-BASED LUBRICANT OR GREASE CAN DAMAGE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS SERVICE INFORMATION Do not apply Silicone-based lubricants or grease to, or around, any interior electrical components. To avoid the risk of death or severe personal injury, do not directly spray Silicone-based lubricant or grease, or inadvertently overspray Silicone-based lubricant or grease onto any interior electrical components. These types of lubricants can be detrimental to the proper operation of electrical components.
