The defect: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Yaris vehicles manufactured August 31, 2011, to February 9, 2015, and sold or registered in Puerto Rico. The affected vehicles may have been manufactured with a roof headliner that does not provide the proper occupant protection in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 201, " Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
The risk: If the vehicles are equipped with a headliner that does not meet the impact requirements, there is an increased risk of occupantl injury in the event of a crash.
The remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headliner, free of charge. The recall began on June 22, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Tire size: P 175 / 65R 15 84 H I purchased these tires through Walmart in 2022. Now, all 4 of my tires have had multiple cracks in the sidewalls. The front passenger tire was flat when I went to drive, and was replaced with a new tire of the same kind on XXX. I don’t feel safe driving with these tires knowing they can deflate at any given moment. There should be a recall issued by the manufacturer. The mechanics at Walmart Auto said that this is not normal for [XXX] tires, and I’m looking for a way I can be refunded. I RENTED THIS VEHICLE AT A MAJOR AIRPORT 2 DAYS BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. IT WAS CLOSE TO 4 PM WHEN I ENTERED THE HOTEL PARKING LOT AT 5 MPH AND SLOWED EVEN MORE WHEN I ENTERED THE PARKING SPACE IN FRONT OF MY HOTEL ROOM. I WAS ALMOST PARKED AND HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO MAKE A COMPLETE STOP JUST ABOUT 3 FEET AWAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS A SOUND IN THE ENGINE LIKE THE TURBINE OF AN AIRPLANE AND THE CAR TOOK OFF FAST SPEED. INSTINCTIVELY I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE EVEN DEEPER BUT THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND: IT WENT OVER THE WALK WAY AND ALTHOUGH I TRIED I COULD NOT CONTROL IT. IT STOPPED WHEN IT REACHED THE WALL OF THE ROOM RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO MINE AND BROKE INTO IT. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED IT OFF. THE ENGINE WAS STILL MAKING THE SAME TURBINE SOUND WHEN I TURNED IT OFF. IT WAS AN APPARENT CASE OF SELF ACCELERATION. EVERYTHING HAPPENED SO SUDDENLY AND SO FAST! THERE WAS A MAJOR PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING CAUSED BY THIS MALFUNCTION. FORTUNATELY NO BODILY INJURIES RESULTED FROM THIS ACCIDENT. THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS TOTALLY DAMAGED. IT WAS PULLED OUT OF THE ROOM WITH POLICE HELP AND LATER TOWED FROM THAT LOCATION. THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT WAS 3:55 PM, THESE FACTS ARE TRUE AND CORRECT EXACTLY AS THEY HAPPENED AND I HAVE A WITNESS.

I RENTED A 2014 TOYOTA YARIS FROM FOX RENT A CAR AT THE ORLANDO, FL AIRPORT ON 2/26/14. THE CAR HAD SEVEN MILES ON IT. AFTER DRIVING TWO BLOCKS THE CAR JUST STARED TO COAST. I PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BUT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. THE ENGINE DIDN'T SPEED UP, THE CAR JUST KEPT COASTING. WHEN THE SPEED DROPPED TO APPROX. FIVE MILES AN HOUR THE TRANSMISSION CAUSED THE CAR TO JERK FORWARD AS IF IT WAS ENGAGING AND THE CAR DROVE AS IT SHOULD. AFTER DRIVING ANOTHER TWO OR THREE BLOCKS THE SAME THING HAPPENED. BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY HAZARD OF ENTERING AN INTERSECTION OR ENTERING A FREEWAY WITH NO POWER I CALL FOX RANT A CAR AND TOLD THEM OF THE PROBLEM. A WOMAN IN THE ROADSIDE SERVICE OFFICE TOLD ME THE CAR PROBABLY HAD A TRANSMISSION WHICH COULD BE SHIFTED FROM AUTOMATIC MODE INTO A MANUAL MODE AND I PROBABLY DONE THAT BY MISTAKE. I TOLD HER THIS WAS A BARE-BONES CAR WITH NO OPTIONS AND THE CAR DID NOT HAVE THAT TYPE OF TRANSMISSION. THE NEXT DAY WHEN WE TRIED TO DRIVE IT, IT CONSTANTLY WENT INTO THIS MODE WHERE THE CAR WENT INTO THE COAST MODE AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT REENGAGE UNTIL THE CAR SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT FIVE MILES AN HOUR. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER IN MELBOURNE AND THEY CONDUCTED COMPUTER TESTS AND EVEN TOOK IT ON A TEST DRIVE WITH THE COMPUTER ON BOARD. THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. I CALLED FOX RENT A CAR AND AFTER MUCH HASSLE THEY DELIVERED ANOTHER 2014 YARIS WITH 1049 MILES ON IT TO ME. THIS CAR DOES THE SAME THING.THE VIN NUMBER GIVEN ABOVE IS FOR THE SECOND CAR. APPARENTLY THERE IS SOME ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT CAUSES THIS MODEL TO DISENGAGE THE POWER TRAIN AND GO INTO THE COAST MODE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN THE CAR WILL DO THIS. Acid rain results from rainwater or other airborne moisture that become acidic due to industrial chemical impurities in the atmosphere. If these acidic compounds settle on an exposed vehicle, especially the horizontal areas such as the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage to the painted surfaces can occur. Acid rain damage can typically be identified on vehicles by the presence of stains on the paint surface that resemble hard water spots. Unlike water spots however, acid rain damage cannot be removed by regular washing procedures. Also, because acid rain can etch and soften the paint, normal buffing or polishing repair procedures should not be attempted. This can cause further damage and result in visible depressions in the paint surface. The following are the three major categories of acid rain damage: •Minor damage: requires only buffing to repair. •Moderate damage: usually requires neutralizing, color sanding, and buffing. •Severe damage: extending beyond 1/2 mil of clearcoat on a pearl, metallic, or solid color, requires neutralization, sanding, and repainting. In cases where acid rain damage is minor, neutralization and buffing with a liquid-type paint finessing product may provide an adequate repair. Only specially formulated products outlined in this bulletin should be used for that purpose. Unfortunately, other than minor damage, there is no simple method of determining the actual extent (depth) of acid penetration other than color sanding a representative affected area until there is no visible etching or depressions, followed by measuring the amount of paint removed with either a magnetic or digital-type film thickness gauge. The procedures in this bulletin are intended for use by qualified body/paint technicians and should not be attempted by inexperienced personnel. It is the dealer’s responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicle’s paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.

To prevent brake rotor rust from forming during transportation and storage, wheel film will be used instead of a cardboard type of anti-rust cover. The purpose of the wheel film is to shield the disc brake rotor from weather elements and initial rust before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. Consequently, the film should remain on the wheel for as long as possible.

The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds. If these contaminants settle and remain on a painted vehicle surface, especially the horizonal areas of the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage can occur. This damage is the result of actual etching of the paint and appears as pitting or water spots. As acid rain droplets on the vehicle surface evaporate, the concentration strength of the acid increases, causing deeper and more rapid damage. This evaporation and corrosive action also occur more rapidly on dark colored cars as direct sun heat increases. It is the dealer’s responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicle’s paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. In areas known for high frequency and/or concentration of acid rain, frequent vehicle washing during high heat or humidity periods will minimize the potential for paint damage caused by acid rain. It is further recommended that either reverse osmosis or deionized water be used to prevent water spotting.

Toyota vehicles are currently protected with RapgardTM protective film designed to protect the horizontal painted surfaces. This material protects from acid rain, environmental fallout, and rail contamination. Follow the Removal Procedure in this bulletin to remove the RapgardTM protective film within 90 days from initial application.
