Vehicle Commanded Engine Shutdown
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this RQ to investigate allegations that the scope and remedy of safety recall 13V-535 were inadequate. Recall 13V-535 was limited to a relatively small population of Ambulance Package vehicles and ODI received complaints of pickup trucks and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles being affected by the same defect. Ford manufactured approximately 555,985 subject vehicles between February 22, 2010 and January 30, 2015 that may be affected by defective EGT sensors and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software calibration. The subject vehicles are equipped with four (4) EGT sensors to monitor engine operating conditions. An EGT sensor fault may produce false exhaust over-temperature signals. If these signals are produced, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) implements a Failure Management Effects Mode (FMEM) and the driver receives a Stop Safely Now (SSN) system warning on the instrument cluster message center. The FMEM triggers a 70% reduction in available engine power over a period of no more than 45 seconds, during which it may not be possible to accelerate or maintain vehicle speed. The PCM then commands the engine to shut down when vehicle speed reaches approximately 1 mph. There is no immediate restart capability. Depending on the PCM software calibration, ignition key position and ambient temperature conditions, the engine may not restart until the end of a 10-60 minute cool down period.Ford and its component supplier(s) made numerous changes to the PCM software calibration and the design, material and manufacture of the EGT sensors over the period of subject vehicle production. This continuous product improvement affected vehicle performance regarding the alleged defect. Ford acknowledges the defect condition in the subject vehicles but argues that an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety is limited to Ambulance Package and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles where commanded shutdown could impact emergency response and patient care. Ford also argues that the defect trend is in decline. Ford also initiated a new safety recall (15V-175) to address the 13V-535 remedy concerns in the Ambulance Package vehicles and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles. The 15V-175 remedy reprograms the PCM with a new software calibration that stops a single EGT sensor fault to cause the vehicle to enter the FMEM shutdown mode.Ford also initiated an EPA emissions recall (14E03) for all subject vehicles that reprograms the PCM with the software calibration employed in safety recall 15V-175. Finally, Ford initiated a Customer Satisfaction Program (15M01) providing extended warranty coverage of 8 years or 80,000 miles for the the EGT sensors on certain MY2011-2012 subject vehicles.Due to the EPA emissions recall, that had a 66.6% completion rate in Ford's December 2015 progress report to the EPA, the defect trend is in decline. ODI is not aware of any crashes, deaths or injuries related to the alleged defect.ODI believes the alleged defect poses a safety risk but notes that the EPA emissions recall is addressing the safety problem.Compelling issuance of a duplicate recall would not represent a wise use of agency resources.Accordingly, this Recall Query is closed.This action is not a finding that no defect exists and NHTSA will take further action if such action is warranted.

I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK 3 MONTHS AGO, AND EXACTLY FOUR DAYS FROM THE PURCHASE DATE THE TRUCK HAS BEEN MALFUNCTIONING, I BOUGHT A WARRANTY FROM DEALER, BUT WHEN I TOOK THE TRUCK IN FOR SERVICE TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOTHING AND THEY TOOK THE ENGINE LIGHT THAT WAS ON OFF. A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER THE TRUCK STARTED HESITATING SO I TOOK IT IN FOR A SERVICE AND OIL CHANGE AND HAD THE FUEL FILTER CHANGED TO SEE IF THAT WAS THE ISSUE, IT ONLY HELP FOR A SHORT PERIOD, WHEN I WAS TRAVELING IN ALABAMA, THE HOSE BLEW OFF AND BLACK SMOKE CAN OUT THE BACK AND I BARELY WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE, SEVERAL MECHANICS LOOKED AT IT AND NO ONE COULD FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON BECAUSE NO CODES SHOWED UP. BOUGHT A HOSE AND DEALERSHIP IN ALABAMA PUT IT ON, CONTINUED MY TRIP, ANOTHER THREE DAYS PASSED BY AND THE TRUCK STARTED TO JERK AND HESITATE WHEN I WAS ON A STEEP HILL, I PUT IT IN A LOWER GEAR BUT NOTHING HELPED I WENT TO A DIESEL EXPERT AND IT TOOK HIM TWO DAY OF EXAMINING THE ENTIRE TRUCK TO FIND OUT IT WAS THE FUEL SYSTEM , THERE WAS METAL SHAVINGS IN THE SYSTEM AND THE WHOLE SYSTEM WAS BREAKING DOWN, I JUST SPENT 50,000 DOLLARS ON THIS TRUCK AND WAS TOLD THIS WOULD COST 8500.00 TO TRY TO FIX, THE 6.7 POWER STROKE FUEL SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE, A FORD F 250 SHOULD LAST SHOULD NOT BREAK DOWN LIKE THIS. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT BAD WITH THIS TRUCK, DEALERS ARE KNOWING THESE TRUCKS HAVE PROBLEMS AND ARE STILL SELLING THEM. THEY ARE CAMOUFLAGING THE PROBLEM WITH COMPUTER TUNING AND SHUTTING OFF THE EMISSION SYSTEM DEF, THESE ITEMS ARE BEING DELETED AND NO ONE IS TELLING US CONSUMERS UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE. FRONT OIL COVER LEAKAGE. THERE ARE FOUR TRUCKS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AT THE DEALER. THE FRONT COVER BOLT LOOSEN THEMSELVES AND CAUSES A SMALL OIL LEAK THAT COVERS THE FRONT AND BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE. THIS LEADS TO MULTIPLE PARTS BEING REPLACE THAT DO NOT NEED REPLACED. AFTER CLEANING THE ENGINE AND FINDING THE LEAK, IT IS TIGHTENING FOUR BOLTS THAT ONLY THREE CAN BE TIGHTENED BY SIGHT. THE FOURTH BOLT COST $4000 TO TIGHTEN. THIS SEEMS TO BE A KNOWN F250 ISSUE.

I EXPERIENCED DEATH WOBBLE AT 70 MPH GOING OVER A BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINT. HAD TO HOLD THE WHEEL WITH BOTH HANDS AND GET DOWN TO 25 MPH BEFORE I COULD REGAIN CONTROL. MY 2014 HAS 75,500 MILES. JUST ORDERED NEW TIRES AND GOT EXACT REPLACEMENTS AS I DON'T WANT TO GIVE FORD AN EXCUSE. THIS IS MY 12TH FORD AND NOW HAVE A VEHICLE MY FAMILY IS NOT ALLOWED IN FOR $45K. I HAVE HAD MANY STEERING AND SUSPENSION PARTS WEAR OUT AND GET LOOSE IN OTHER FORDS, BUT NEVER HAS ANY WEAR FORCED MY OFF THE ROAD AND NOT ALLOW MY FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE. FRONT SUSPENSION DEATH WOBBLE. I WAS DRIVING 70 MPH HIT A SMALL SERIES OF BUMPS ON THE HIGHWAY THE TRUCK STARTED TO SHAKE SO BAD I COULD NOT KEEP IT IN MY LANE. I ENDED UP CROSSING TWO LANES OF I-70 AND INTO THE MEDIAN BEFORE I COULD GET THE TRUCK BACK UNDER CONTROL. TRUCK WAS NOT DAMAGED BUT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS TRUCK THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS ACTUALLY KILLED. 2014 FORD F-250 6.7L LARIAT SUPER DUTY - 73,000 MILES I PURCHASED IT ABOUT 55,000 MILES. 100% STOCK, NO LIFT OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. IT STARTED A SHIMMER IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WHEN GOING OVER SMALL BUMPS IN THE ROAD GOING OVER 55MPH. I NOW GET A TREMENDOUS SHAKE, IE PROBABLY THE "DEATH WOBBLE" AND HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO 20MPH FOR IT TO STOP SHAKING BEFORE IT TAKES ME OFF THE ROAD. I LOSE FULL CONTROL UNTIL IT STOPS. I ROTATE MY TIRES WITH EACH OIL CHANGE AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE IT IS PROPERLY ALIGNED. ONCE IT HAPPENED WHEN HAULING MY 40FT 5TH WHEEL BUT LUCKILY I HAD A QUIET INTERSTATE AND WAS ABLE TO HOLD ON FOR DEAR LIFE UNTIL I GOT IT ALL SLOWED DOWN, THIS HAPPENED GOING 65MPH DRIVING STRAIGHT. THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED 5 TIMES IN THE LAST 9 MONTHS / 10,000 MILES. MOST MILES ARE PUT ON GOING UNDER 55MPH SO I'M SURE IT WOULD HAPPEN MORE IF I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS. THIS ISSUE IS DEFINITELY NOT NORMAL AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY FORD BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT.

I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN DEC. 2017 WITH 17,000 MILES ON IT, AND IT NOW HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT. ON FEB 11,12 WHILE DRIVING IN AKRON OHIO AT AROUND 65 MPH I HIT A BUMP AND THE FRONT END STARTED SHAKING SO FIERCELY I COULD HARDLY CONTROL THE TRUCK. MY WIFE WAS WITH ME AND WAS TERRIFIED. IF SHE WAS DRIVING IT SHE WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL IT AND WOULD PROBABLY BEEN INVOLVED IN A HORRIBLE AND MOST LIKELY A FATAL ACCIDENT. MY PROBLEM IS THAT I'M FINDING OUT THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR A WHILE NOW AND FORD ISN'T DOING ANYTHING ABOUT OR AS MY DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID WHEN I DROPPED IT OF THIS MORNING, DOESN'T THINK IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS TRUCK HAS DONE THIS NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE 13,000 MILES SINCE I'VE OWNED IT. I'VE HAD IT LOOKED AT EACH AND THE PLACE I TOOK IT TO CAN'T FIND ANYTHING LOOSE, HOWEVER THE ONE TIME THEY REPLACE THE STEERING DAMPER AND THAT SEEMED TO HELP FOR A LITTLE WHILE. I HAVE A 2014 F250 AND I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AT 106K, WHEN I HAD IT CHECKED IT WAS READING CODE P20BA. I KNOW THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS CODE FOR THE DEF HEATER REDUNDANT ON YEARS BEFORE AND AFTER...WHEN WILL THERE BE A RECALL FOR THIS YEAR AS WELL. I HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED AT THE DEALERSHIP.

ENGINE
Some 2013-2016 Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine and 2015-2019 Transit vehicles equipped with a 3.2L diesel engine may not pass a state smog test due to the exhaust gas system (EGS) monitor that will not run after completing the Exhaust Gas Sensor drive cycle located within Section 2 of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnostics (PC/ED) Manual > Drive Cycles. This may be due to the vehicles diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) age counter being under the 120-minute requirement. Engineering is investigating this issue and working on a solution.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; STRUCTURE:BODY
Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with wired keyless entry keypad systems and accessory wireless keyless entry keypad systems may or may not come with a wallet card containing the master code. Unlike the integrated wired keypad, the accessory wireless keypad master code cannot be retrieved from the vehicle using a diagnostic scan tool or from the label printed on the body control module (BCM). The Factory Keyless Entry Code application within the diagnostic scan tool will not provide an applicable master code for the accessory wireless keypad. If the wallet card for an accessory keypad is not available, the "Wireless RF Keypad Diagnosis Guide" can be referenced and provides direction on how to retrieve the master code. This guide is located under the Workshop Manual tab > Accessories > Installation > Wireless RF Keypad Diagnosis Guide > PPT C > Step C2.<br /><br /> Note: The only available keypad for some vehicles from the assembly plant is the accessory wireless keyless entry keypad. EQUIPMENT
All accessory stick-on keyless entry keypads come with a wallet card containing the master code. If the accessory keypad was factory installed, this card will be placed in the glove box and should be handed to the vehicles owner during initial delivery. Unlike the integrated (wired) factory keypad, the accessory keypad master code cannot be retrieved from the vehicle using a diagnostic scan tool. If the wallet card for an accessory keypad is lost, follow these steps to recover the code. Dealer Key Code access is granted through the Dealer Program Enrollment System (DPES); dealership management can authorize users. The authorized user must go to FMCDealer.com > Parts and Service > Parts Product Line Information > Keys/Entry Devices > Aftermarket Keyless Entry Keypad Code Access. Follow the instructions on the screen to obtain the master code for the accessory keypad.
STEERING
2024 F-Super Duty vehicles are equipped with XL-22 (WSS-M2C184-A1) high temperature power steering fluid that looks like clear hydraulic fluid. This fluid is an improvement in high temperature and thermal oxidative stability compared to Mercon LV. This power steering fluid is also compatible and highly recommended to use when filling or topping off power steering systems of all 2012-2023 F-Super Duty vehicles originally equipped with Mercon LV.
