Sogefi Secondary Diesel Fuel Filter Leak
The Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) has received 27 complaints alleging diesel fuel leaks due to a fracture in the secondary fuel filter housing in model year (MY) 2015-2021 Ford Motor Company (Ford) F-250, 350, 450, and 550 Super Duty vehicles equipped with 6.7L diesel engines. Of these complaints, 12 describe an engine compartment fire. The proximity of the secondary fuel filter to high heat sources creates a potential for autoignition thermal events and fires. ODI has contacted the vehicle manufacturer, Ford, and the filter manufacturer, Allevard Sogefi USA (Sogefi), and learned that the low-pressure fuel system is capable of a maximum operating pressure of 8.5 Bar, while the secondary fuel filter is only tested to seven (7) Bar during the manufacturing process. Additionally, changes starting in 2022 by both Ford and Sogefi align with a lack of similar complaints on MY 2022 and newer vehicles. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to evaluate the severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related problems. Power Tailgate Release Systems
In January 2021, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ21-001) to assess allegations of post-recall remedy uncommanded tailgate openings in model year (MY) 2017-2019 F-250/350/450 Ford trucks. Besides the recall remedy launched in January 2020, Ford also implemented a production update in November 2019. At the time of the RQ opening, ODI had received eleven (11) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs). ODI sent an Information Request (IR) to Ford in February 2021. In numerous meetings after receiving their IR response, Ford highlighted the drop in claims since the recall and production update and communicated how they were unable to verify the owners’ complaints or replicate the concern. Despite this, Ford began developing ways to prevent uncommanded tailgate openings from various human, mechanical or electrical causes. Based on testing, Ford issued a Customer Satisfaction program, 21M05-S1/S2/S3, to further address the potential of unintended tailgate openings. This work was applied to vehicles being produced as of December 20, 2021. The program began for already delivered vehicles on July 22, 2022. The covered models include 2017-2022 F-250, 350, 450, 550, 650 and 750 Super Duty and 2020-2022 F-600 Super Duty trucks. ODI has received 39 VOQs between February 24, 2020, and December 15, 2023, alleging uncommanded tailgate openings. In a detailed analysis, none of the vehicles in the VOQs were found to have received the Customer Satisfaction update. Since ODI has not received any complaints of post-Customer Satisfaction program tailgate openings, this office is closing this Recall Query. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. Power tailgate opens unintended
By letter dated December 4, 2019, Ford Motor Company (Ford) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of a safety defect that may exist in model years (MY) 2017 through 2019 Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate. Following the receipt of five consumer complaints alleging unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge, while the vehicles were in motion, NHTSA opened this investigation to assess the manufacturer's data including warranty claims, field reports, design changes, etc.In vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate, water can enter the electrical wiring system and may cause a short circuit resulting in the unintended activation and release of the tailgate latch. This could allow unintended opening of the tailgate while the vehicle is in motion.Analysis of the data provided by Ford found that the frequency of a tailgate opening unintended was high in vehicles equipped with electric tailgates. Unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge may result in loss of unrestrained cargo, increasing the risk of a crash. In response to this investigation, Ford decided to conduct recall 19V-864.Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to modify the tailgate/frame wiring harnesses by adding jumper pigtails to isolate the tailgate release control circuits, and will install a new tailgate handle release switch. With recall action 19V-864 taken by Ford Motor Company this investigation is closed. Further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist on other model or MY vehicles outside of the recall scope. On 5/8/2026 at 1555 hours, while driving at normal freeway speed under normal driving conditions, vehicle began an exhaust system regeneration cycle. During the course of the region cycle, vehicle began to smoke excessively and realizing this wan not normal, I was able to yield to the right shoulder of the roadway. Almost immediately the vehicle ignited on fire and completely burned to the ground. The fire appeared to have commenced in the engine compartment, driver side near the firewall. The location of which appears to be consistent with reports of fuel filter failures I have read about in the past. The resulting fire ignited nearby brush which burned several hundred feet of brush and resulted in the spillage of diesel fuel and coolant which combined from the resulting melting of the coolant system and fuel tank and lines. This incident put both me and surrounding communities at risk, particularly from the resulting fire and HAZMAT spill. The vehicle was in good running condition prior to this incident. The incident was investigated by the Templeton California Highway Patrol.

I am reporting a serious safety issue involving my 2017 Ford F-250 diesel truck. While towing a 34-foot fifth wheel trailer and traveling from [XXX] to [XXX] , the vehicle experienced a sudden and dangerous failure near [XXX] . The engine warning light appeared, the vehicle went into low power mode, and then completely shut down on the highway. This created a serious safety hazard, particularly while towing a large trailer at highway speeds. The vehicle was towed to a repair facility where it was determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had catastrophically failed. The pump had developed a significant crack and released metal debris throughout the entire fuel system. This required extensive repairs, including: - Replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump - Replacement of fuel lines - Full fuel system cleaning, including the fuel tank The total repair cost exceeded $14,000 USD (near $20,000 CAD). The mechanic indicated that this type of failure should not occur under normal operating conditions. Additionally, the Ford parts dealer advised that the failed fuel pump could be returned for credit, suggesting the failure may not be consistent with normal wear and tear. This failure occurred suddenly, without warning, and resulted in a complete loss of power while driving, which I believe represents a significant safety concern. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this issue as a potential safety-related defect involving high-pressure fuel pumps in diesel vehicles. This past year I experienced catastrophic failure with my Bosch, CP4 fuel pump in my 2017 Ford F250 with a 6.7 L diesel. Recalls have been published by Ford, but not beyond a 2018 vehicle. After seeing metal fragments in my fuel water separator, I was forced to flush my entire fuel system, replace the CP4 fuel pump with a CDR high pressure pump (replacement), flush the entire fuel rail system and replace my fuel injectors. This repair cost me approximately $13,000. I find it difficult to understand why my 2017 vehicle was not included in the recall when it had the defective item as the later models had. The truck has 129,000 miles on it currently. Certainly, these are not excessive miles given the year of the vehicle. I would like to know what can be done for older models(the Bosch CP4 fuel pump goes all the way back to 2011). Thank you for your consideration and attention to this

No less than 6 occasions now I have experienced extreme shaking (death wobble) even after Ford replaced the steering damper. I'm done with the vehicle and will take it in again for this issue.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70-75 MPH, the vehicle drove over a bump in the roadway, and the front end of the vehicle started bouncing. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and then continued driving 45 MPH with no further issues. The dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

2 different issues- 1st issue was Ford factory fuel filter leaked at a seam. Resulting in fuel loss all over engine! 2nd issue is fuel filter inlet line retaining clip comes unclipped on its own resulting in fuel loss all over the engine. Both incidents happened during long distance travel which also resulted in several gallons of fuel drenching whole undercarriage of vehicle.

We get a power reduced code and the truck shuts down while driving. We have to pull over and put it in park and restart it. When we are on the freeway we can’t get over we put it in neutral and turn off the truck and restart it. It is very scary and dangerous! This has been happening since June of 2025.

The contact owned a 2017 Ford F-250. The contact stated while driving 22 MPH and attempting to depress the brake pedal, the brake pedal was firm and difficult to depress. The brake pedal was depressed with both feet and the vehicle started slowing down. There was no warning light illuminated. After coming to a complete stop, the contact saw smoke coming from the grill underneath the windshield wipers and the lower windshield. The contact exited the vehicle and there was fire coming from the engine compartment and entering the cabin of the vehicle. The contact exited the vehicle, ran to the neighbor’s house and grabbed the garden hose and started spraying water on the hood; however, smoke and the fire increased and the fire was too hot for the house to put out the flames. The contact called 9-1-1 for assistance and the Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the Fire. The Police showed up on scene to direct traffic. There was no injuries sustained. A Police Report was filed, but the report number was not provided. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case and provided the contact with the case number. The failure mileage was approximately 190,000.

Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with wired keyless entry keypad systems and accessory wireless keyless entry keypad systems may or may not come with a wallet card containing the master code. Unlike the integrated wired keypad, the accessory wireless keypad master code cannot be retrieved from the vehicle using a diagnostic scan tool or from the label printed on the body control module (BCM). The Factory Keyless Entry Code application within the diagnostic scan tool will not provide an applicable master code for the accessory wireless keypad. If the wallet card for an accessory keypad is not available, the "Wireless RF Keypad Diagnosis Guide" can be referenced and provides direction on how to retrieve the master code. Some 2017-2026 F-Super Duty vehicles may exhibit a pull/drift condition during braking. This may be due to the brake pads needing to be broken in. Repeated, heavy brake applications may assist to resolve the pull/drift condition. The Workshop Manual, Section 206-00 Symptom Chart for vehicle pulls or drifts during braking has been updated to reflect this information.
