Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM/PCM/TECM); POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)

Jun 10, 2016
12,631 units potentially affected
The defect: Maserati North America, Inc. (Maserati) is recalling certain model year 2014 Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles manufactured June 1, 2013, to February 28, 2014. The affected vehicles, equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a monostable gear selector, may mislead owners about which gear the vehicle is in and may not adequately warn the driver when driver's door is opened and the vehicle is not in PARK, allowing them to exit the vehicle while the vehicle is still in gear.
The risk: Drivers thinking that their vehicle's transmission is in the PARK position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.
The remedy: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update, free of charge. The remedy software is currently in development. Owners were mailed an interim notification on July 1, 2016. A second notice will be mailed when the software is available. Owners may contact Maserati customer service at 1-877-696-2737. Maserati's number for this recall is 307.

WHILE DRIVING ON A PUBLIC STREET, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER AND FAILED TO RESPOND TO ACCELERATOR INPUT, EVENTUALLY STALLING. THE TRANSMISSION AND POWER STEERING LOCKED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART, PRECLUDING TIMELY CLEARANCE OF THE VEHICLE FROM THE STREET WHERE IT WAS PARTIALLY BLOCKING TRAFFIC. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO JUMP START THE VEHICLE, IT RESTARTED; HOWEVER, THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND STALLED AGAIN. SUBSEQUENT ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE ENGINE WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP (MASERATI OF AUSTIN), WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD A FAULTY LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (THE V-8 GTS VERSION OF THE MASERATI QUATTROPORTE WAS RECALLED IN 2017 FOR REPLACEMENT OF AN ACTUATOR IN THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP THAT RESULTED IN THE SAME LOSS OF ENGINE POWER; NHTSA RECALL NUMBER, 17V610000). *TR

WHEELS

This Diagnostic Sheet provides updated diagnostic and repair guidance for a potential wheel hub clicking noise condition on M182 Grecale ICE vehicles (all model years). The procedures outlined are intended to assist technicians in accurately identifying and correcting axle shaft and wheel hub related noise concerns that may be present during low‑speed operation, reversing, or initial vehicle launch.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
