WE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVERS SIDE AUTOMATIC SAFETY HARNESS. IT WAS NOT WORKING WHEN WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED ABOUT A YEAR AGO. I CHECKED ON THE WEB AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING RECALL: 97V063001 THAT IS LISTED AS A RECALL FOR WHAT LOOKS LIKE OUR PROBLEM. I CALLED A LOCAL DEALER AND THEY DID NOT FIND ANY RECALL ON OUR CAR, A 1992 MITSUBISHI MIRAGE LS, VIN NUMBER: [XXX] . THE REFERENCED NUMBER ABOVE LOOKS LIKE A RECALL TO ME. I WENT AND TESTED THE SWITCH MYSELF AND FOUND THE SWITCH DID NOT WORK ELECTRICALLY. WHEN I UNPLUGGED THE SWITCH AND MANUALLY SHORTED THE CONNECTORS THE SAFETY HARNESS WILL GO BACK AND FORTH. THIS TELLS ME THAT THE PROBLEM LISTED IS THE CORRECT PROBLEM. WE NEED THIS FIXED AND I FEEL IT IS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT WITH A RECALL NOT NOTED BY THE LOCAL DEALER. HOW DO I GET IT FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER? *NM UPDATED 07/17/2012 *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
