Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Farber Specialty Vehicles (Farber) is recalling various specialty vehicles modified by Farber and equipped with model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon Corporation. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack.
The risk: If the platform side plates crack, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the doors are opened, the platform may fall out, increasing the risk of injury to the lift operator.
The remedy: Farber will notify owners to take their vehicles to a Ricon dealer or service center who will install supplemental platform support bumpers. Any platform that has already started cracking will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on March 24, 2015. Owners may contact Farber customer service at 1-800-331-3188, or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884. Farber's number for this recall is 14E-041.

The defect: Creative Bus Sales, Inc is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Chevrolet and GMC C5500, and Ford E450, and Econoline 350 vehicles equipped with Braun wheelchair lifts. Over time, or with frequent use, the roll stop latches on the outer barrier of the lifts may become bent or misaligned.
The risk: A wheelchair occupant may defeat or ride over the insufficiently latched roll stop. If this occurs when the lift platform is in an elevated position, the wheelchair's occupant could fall and sustain injury.
The remedy: Braun is conducting this recall on behalf of Creative Bus Sales. Braun will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The recall began on November 23, 2012. Owners may contact Creative Bus at 1-888-633-8380 or Braun at 1-800-488-0359.

Closed Apr 21, 2010

ODI has received 1 complaint and reports from 4 transportation fleets alleging 182 switch failures. Each fleet operates mini buses built on a Ford E350 or E450 cutaway chassis. The OEM HVAC blower switches have melted, smoked, burned or experienced open flame and become inoperable on vehicles in each fleet. Some drivers have reported a burning smell or smoke coming from the dash. One fleet reported a vehicle fire.No injuries were sustained. However, the bus was carrying special needs children when the driver noticed smoke coming from the dash. The driver was able to evacuate the children prior to the vehicle becoming engulfed in flames. This PE has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA) to determine if the blower motor switch failures create a situation where a vehicle fire is possible and presents a safety risk to the driver and other passengers.

WHILE ON A TRIP AND WHILE RETURNING HOME THE R/R INSIDE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SWAY. I WAS TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY 231, A 4 LANE HIGHWAY,. I WAS TRAVELING 65MPH AT THE TIME OF THE TIRE FAILURE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO THE FLORIDA WELCOME CENTER LOCATED ON THE FLORIDA ALABAMA LINE. I HAD TO CALL SOMEONE OUT TO CHANGE THE TIRE. AFTER RETURNING HOME TO PANAMA CITY, FLORIDA I TOOK THE VEHICLE AND TIRE BACK TO PEP BOYS TO HAVE IT REPLACED. I ADVISED THE SERVICE WRITER THAT I HADE PURCHASED ROAD HAZARD INSURANCE WHEN I PURCHASED THE TIRES AND ADVISED HIM AS TO WHAT HAPPENED AND HE ADVISED ME THAT TIRE SEPARATION WAS NOT A ROAD HAZARD AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY 50.00 DOLLARS TO HAVE THE TIRE REPLACED. THE TIRES I BOUGHT FOR MY MOTOR HOME WERE DEFINITY DAKOTA H/T LT 225 75R 16. THE SERVICE WRITER ADVISED ME THAT THEY NO LONGER SOLD THIS TIRE AND REPLACED IT WITH A COOPER TIRE. THEY PUT THE TIRE THAT WAS ON THE R/R OUTSIDE AT THE TIME OF THE INSIDE TIRE FAILURE ON THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL AND PUT THE NEW TIRE ON THE OUTSIDE. NOW I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE R/R INSIDE TIRE NOT HOLDING AIR. I FEEL THAT THESE TIRES ARE NOT SAFE TO USE ON ANOTHER TRIP. THE SERVICE WRITER DID NOT LOOK TO CONCERNED ABOUT THE PROBLEM.

EMPLOYEES WERE DRIVING TRUCK ON A LEVEL ROAD, AND IT RAPIDLY LOST POWER. THEY STOPPED AND CALLED ME, AND I TOLD THEM TO CHECK A NUMBER OF THINGS. EVERYTHING LOOKED OK. BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO FORD DEALER, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS RUSTED/RUSTING ON THE INSIDE. THEY ADVISED ME THAT THE TANK, SENDING UNIT, AND FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, BEFORE THEY COULD SEE IF THE INJECTORS, FUEL LINES, AND TURBO WERE DAMAGED. I CHECKED ON THE INTERNET BEFORE AUTHORIZING THE REPAIRS, AND WAS ASTOUNDED BY THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT HAD THE SAME EXACT ISSUES. THE TANKS ARE DEFECTIVE, AND DELAMINATE, THEREFORE CLOGGING THE FUEL SYSTEM. THEY REPAIR BILL THAT I WAS QUOTED BEFORE WE EVEN GOT TO THE ENGINE, WAS $3700.00+TAX!!!. THIS IS UNREAL THAT THE NHTSA HAS NOT FORCED A RECALL YET. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE FIRST? SOME PEOPLE REPORTED REPAIR BILLS OF $11,000+!! I AM A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER. I PAID $45,000.00 FOR THIS VEHICLE, MAINTAINED IT RELIGIOUSLY. THE TRUCK ONLY HAS 66,000 MILES ON IT. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS TO THE NHTSA, AND IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT THIS HAS BEEN KNOWN ABOUT FOR SOME TIME. THERE ARE ALSO SOME CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS THAT ARE IN PLACE. I CANNOT AFFORD THIS REPAIR. I WILL GET A PETITION GOING TO ASK THE NHTSA TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES. IF THE NHTSA KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, AND SOMEONE HAS AN ACCIDENT AND KILLS SOMEONE, WOULD THAT NOT HAVE THE NHTSA SHOULDER SOME BLAME? IS THIS ANOTHER COVER UP LIKE THE GENERAL MOTORS IGNITION RECALL? I URGE YOU TO PLEASE RECALL THESE AFFECTED VEHICLES. FORD KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, AND THEY IMMEDIATELY BLAME IT ON FUEL. I HAVE 6 TRUCKS THAT ALL RUN ON DIESEL. THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM IS THIS VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE SOMEONE FROM THIS AGENCY TO CONTACT ME ASAP. THIS TRUCK IS A MAIN SOURCE OF INCOME FOR ME AND MY EMPLOYEES, AND IT I SITTING AT A DEALER FOR 5 DAYS SO FAR. *TR

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

When performing any transmission fluid changes or topoffs involving MERCON SP, MERCON LV has replaced all versions of MERCON SP and can be used going forward. Mixing MERCON LV and MERCON SP in the same transmission is acceptable. After 30-Jun-2023, MERCON SP ATF will no longer be manufactured and will only be available until inventory depletes.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; TRAILER HITCHES

These SKUs are Trailer Brake Control Modules. The customer communication requested return of unsold inventory due to an internal software issue. The internal software issue leads to a false check trailer brake message and Trailer Brake Controller fault whenever the brake pedal is pressed. This will cause the part to be replaced, due to repetitive dashboard warning light, even though it sends signals to the trailer brakes properly.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
