Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. The tailgate's electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which can result in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in park.
The risk: An unlatched tailgate may open while driving and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 17, 2024. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. May 3 2026 was traveling on highway when my 2023 dually duramax wheels locked up on me causing me to hit a guard rail and then truck would not go into any gear and was toast after first dealership it went to was valve body repair and after 1400 dollars it went to another dealer on June 17th to Frank brown for transmission replacement due to failed valve body issue similar to special bulletin n242454441 GMC executive office promised to replace and take Care of me since I am a “valuable customer and instead they lied and went back on their word and left me with another bill of 9,300 dollars for repairs 6200 for transmission and 3000 dollars for labor???? I am feeling like I’m being taken advantage of and need help I’ve lost my job since this has happened and struggling to pay for the truck it’s self but I am maintaining and when they are hoping I get it repossessed so they can get away with not having to deal with my case I’ve gotten under delivered promised and they haven’t helped me at all for something. They are avoiding to admit is an issue when the truck was manufactured and put into sale 10/2022 as for the recalled vehicles from 2019 and 2022 and I continue to tell them this truck was manufactured 2022 they are trying to get away with technical wording when this truck has an safety issue for sure as a consumer and hard working American I need help

Fuel system
Filed Jul 10, 2026

The vehicle experienced a catastrophic fuel system failure involving the high-pressure fuel pump and related fuel system components. While driving, the engine began stalling and lost power, making the vehicle unsafe to operate. The failed components were replaced during repairs; however, the repair records, photographs, and additional documentation are available for inspection upon request. The failure created a significant safety risk because the vehicle stalled unexpectedly while being driven, resulting in a sudden loss of power. This placed the occupants and surrounding motorists at risk by reducing the driver's ability to safely control the vehicle or move it out of traffic. The problem was confirmed by an independent repair facility, which documented extensive metallic contamination (metal shavings) throughout the fuel system. Photographs and videos taken during the inspections document metallic contamination within the fuel system. From our understanding, cp4 pump failure has been a common issue.

275/65R20 - Goodyear Wrangler. This is the tire that came with the vehicle. It had approximately 32,000 miles. The tire separated and exploded. We installed the spare but one of the other tires is getting ready to explode. This is not normal wear and tear. This is out of the ordinary that tires on a new vehicle explode. We were on [XXX] when this happened. This tire is a death trap. This is forcing us to replace all 4 tires because we do not know what is going to happen. The dealership (Jerry Seiner) will do NOTHING. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

August of 2025 [XXX] purchased a certified GMC Sierra 3500. The truck had been traded in May and sat in their service department waiting on a valve body. At this point, we knew this. [XXX] had done research on it, and felt confident in being told the valve body was completely replaced and now working…. Worst mistake we’ve made in a long time. It was not replaced, that was only the beginning of the lies. [XXX] then drove the truck across the country for work, not knowing how much of a hazzard it was. Shortly after arriving there he quickly realized the truck was still having transmission problems. We brushed it off, these things happen. Fast forward when he came home in September/October he took the truck to the Rice Buick GMC service department. Where he was supposed to “wait” on his appointment. Only to call me hours later, they clearly weren’t going to be done that day. We left not knowing that it would be nearly a month until we could drive the truck again. In the midst of that they never offered any help, a rental or anything. When I asked, they offered a tiny small car next door at enterprise. I clearly did not agree, we just spent a lot of money on a heavy duty truck for a reason. It took multiple phone calls to multiple supervisors for them to agree to let him rent a truck. Because you know they might have to spend an extra penny or something (que the eye roll). In that month of having the truck the communication was little to non existent. They never answered the phone, called back, heck most of the time the text messages weren’t even replied to. It once again took me getting a little bit ridiculous for an answer - the truck was “fixed”. When I picked up the truck I spoke to the the service manager, and he of course tried to play me like I was some dumb women who had no idea what I was talking about. He dismissed all of my concerns, acted like having a truck for a month was normal. I have a 2023 GMC Sierra HD3500 6.6 Duramax. February of 2025 the valve body failed after 23,000 miles. The failure happened when the transmission had an extremely hard shift at 55 mph and then went into 5 gear limp mode. Computer through code P0700 and P0747. The P0747 is the code that tells you the valve body failed. When I took the truck to the dealer, they would not let me take the truck home because of the high risk of the transmission locking up and causing bodily injury, aka crash. Since the valve body was back ordered, I was warmed that it may be a month to get a replacement and install it. I finally got the truck back after 33 days. To add to the frustration, GM would not give me a loaner truck. They would give me a loaner SUV but that did not have what I needed out of a vehicle.

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

PIT6110K

This Preliminary information communicates an issue with the SES MIL and DTC P062B and engineering is currently investigating.

PIP6060A

This PI communicates diagnostic information to assist Technicians with a possible transmission shudder

PIT5680B

This PI provides information to repair the door water deflector which is not sealed properly allows water into the door jam/sill area.

PIT5509N

This PI provides diagnostic tips for diagnosing electric trailer brakes issues.

PIT5099J

PI to help diagnose A/C concern

PIT6473F

This PI was created to help avoid unnecessary front camera module replacements

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
