Front Steering Knuckle Fractures
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is upgrading its Preliminary Evaluation (PE25006) of front steering knuckle fractures on model year (MY) 2014 through 2017 Range Rover Sport vehicles to an Engineering Analysis. ODI opened PE25006 on June 27, 2025, after receiving 12 Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire (VOQ) reports of the front aluminum steering knuckles fracturing in these vehicles. The reports describe the fractures occurring at the joint where the steering knuckle attaches to the upper control arm ball joint in one or both steering knuckles. Fracture of the front suspension knuckle can lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm. Detachment of the upper suspension arm results in the driver’s inability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed information supplied by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to Information Request letters as well as reviewed the data with JLR on numerous occasions. ODI further reviewed relevant data on a peer vehicle with a significantly similar steering knuckle design, the MY 2014 through 2017 Range Rover. Much of the information is contradictory and requires a deeper analysis that is available in an Engineering Analysis. On August 5, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) filed safety recall 25V514. This recall covers certain MY 2014 and all MY 2015-2017 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. The remedy for recall 25V514 addresses knuckles with and without a visible fracture. Knuckles that have developed a visible fracture will be replaced with a new knuckle of a substantially similar design. Knuckles with no fracture visibly present will have a brace attached to the upper portion of the front steering knuckle. JLR states that the purpose of the brace is to prevent the component from completely separating should a fracture develop. NHTSA continues to receive allegations of fractures occurring in the front steering knuckles of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. Two of the most recent VOQs received by ODI involve front steering knuckle fractures occurring on MY 2020 and MY 2021 Range Rover L405 vehicles. ODI will continue to investigate the component design and assess the potential safety risk as part of this Engineering Analysis and evaluate the recall remedies for Recall 25V514. Further, the scope of this Engineering Analysis will be expanded to include MY 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles as they have a substantially similar component design. The contact owns a 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine and low coolant warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was pulled over to the shoulder of the road. Upon further inspection, the contact became aware of a coolant leak under the vehicle. The coolant reservoir was refilled, and there was white smoke coming from under the hood. A local independent mechanic arrived on scene and scanned the vehicle with an OBD2 scanner, but a diagnostic fault code was not provided. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Upon further investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign: 23V221000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

I had my oil changed and mechanic noted both my fuel tank belly pans were heavily corroded, which was odd for a garaged car with lower miles. They recommended reaching out to my dealership since this is a pressing issue that likely should include a recall or warranty. When I researched the issue, it's a known Range Rover Sport design issue, a 2019 should not have this much corrosion and it sounds like condensation pools. Also, the mechanic noted that this likely has been happening for a while. The RI Range Rover dealership inspected my car in August 2025, and didn't flag any issues.

The contact owns a 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 MPH, there was a message of a "Module Failure" displayed, and the master warning light was illuminated before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the residence and then to a dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the DC converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the check engine warning light illuminated approximately 20 minutes after restarting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the battery control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact believed that the failure was associated with damages from the original failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a complaint was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

Safety Complaint Regarding Engine Oil Leak – Same Defect as Recall N763 (23V044000) Vehicle: 2019 Range Rover Sport | VIN: [XXX] Description of Problem: My vehicle is experiencing an oil leak from the engine area. Upon inspection by my mechanic/dealer, the failure was diagnosed as a blocked or improperly machined oil channel in the engine cam carrier, which is causing oil to leak externally. This is the exact component and failure mode described in Land Rover Safety Recall N763 (NHTSA Campaign 23V044000), which addresses a blocked engine cam carrier oil channel that can lead to an oil leak. Despite having the identical part failure on my vehicle, my VIN is not listed under the current recall scope. Safety Concern: I am extremely concerned about the fire risk. An oil leak in the presence of hot engine components or an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. I have already observed oil spots where I park and occasionally smell burning oil while driving. I believe the recall population should be expanded to include my vehicle, as the defect clearly exists outside the current VIN range. Actions Taken: I contacted a Land Rover dealer, but they refused to cover the repair because my VIN is not on the active recall list. Safety Complaint Regarding Coolant Leak – Same Defect as Recall N785 Vehicle: 2019 Range Rover Sport | VIN: [XXX] Description of Problem: My vehicle is experiencing a persistent and significant coolant loss. Upon inspection by my mechanic/dealer, the failure was diagnosed as a leaking coolant pipe/elbow connected to the turbocharger system. This is the exact component and failure mode described in Land Rover Safety Recall N785, which addresses a coolant elbow rupture that can leak fluid onto hot engine components and cause an engine fire. Despite having the identical part failure on my vehicle, my VIN is not listed under the current recall scope. Safety Concern: I am extremely concerned about the fire risk and the potential for sudden engine overheating while driving at highway speeds. I have already had to repeatedly refill the coolant just to operate the vehicle safely. I believe the recall population should be expanded to include my vehicle, as the defect clearly exists outside the current VIN range. Actions Taken: I contacted a Land Rover dealer, but they refused to cover the repair because my VIN is not on the active recall list. Intermittent problem.The car while going forward with no warning slows down to around 20 to 30mph and cannot go faster when depressing the gas pedal. After pulling over to the side of the road, shutting down, opening the car door and restarting the car runs normally.

Vehicle: 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE While driving approximately 65-70 mph, a red battery/charging warning appeared instructing me to pull over immediately. Within approximately 3-5 minutes, the vehicle rapidly lost electrical power and became completely disabled while driving. EVERYTHING in my car started shutting down; no air, no lights, no steering. Steering and vehicle functions became inoperable and the vehicle required towing. The repair facility diagnosed a charging-system malfunction. Diagnostic notes stated the alternator was only producing approximately 11.2 volts and was not charging the battery. The repair facility also documented that the alternator was saturated in engine oil due to leaking valve covers and oil filter housing components. Repairs included replacement of the alternator, valve covers, oil filter housing, gaskets, coolant-related components, and associated labor under Land Rover repair procedures. I am submitting this complaint because the sudden loss of electrical power while driving at highway speed created a serious safety concern. The only thing that saved me for an accident is the high speed I was traveling coasted my car to the exit as an 18-wheeler truck was on the side and behind me.

Body Control Module (BCM) does not fully meet US importation requirements. The BCM requires replacement with a new component which fully meets the US importation requirements.
