Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Loss of motive power due to engine failure post recall remedy

Opened Aug 20, 2026

On January 16, 2026, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ26001.  This investigation was opened to assess the remedy effectiveness of Recall 25V-274. ODI has received complaints alleging engine failure in vehicles after the recall remedy had been completed, whether that remedy involved an oil viscosity change or a complete engine replacement. General Motors (GM) issued Recall 25V-274 to address concerns of engine failure in the L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issue. GM’s recall remedy for Recall 25V-274 consisted of two different repairs, either an oil viscosity change or an engine replacement, based on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. ODI continues to receive reports of engine failures after the completion of the recall remedy. To date, ODI has received 499 complaints alleging post-remedy engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V-274, 473 of which involved an oil viscosity change and 26 a complete engine replacement. Additionally, ODI has received 191 reports of L87 engine failures in engines produced after the production period cited in Recall 25V-274. GM reported receiving 6,953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysisto continue investigating complaints of post-remedy engine failure. Loss of motive power due to engine failure

Opened Oct 23, 2025

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure failures in the L87 6.2L engine produced by General Motors (GM). Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. These engines are installed in Model Years (MY) 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2021-2024MY Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV vehicles. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001).  GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274.  This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation.  ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

While driving, the digital driver/instrument display behind the steering wheel went completely black, but the engine continued running and the radio remained on. The vehicle was stopped, turned off and restarted and the display screen came back on. This didn't effect the drivability of the vehicle. In some of the research I've found the cause might be an instrument-cluster software problem or an "Instrument Cluster Missing Graphics Processor". The recommended remedy would be to replace the instrument cluster. There is also one instance where the dealer reportedly determined that the instrument panel control module needed to be reset versus repaired which would not permanently resolve the issue.

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. While the contact’s husband was driving 70-75 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond, but the RPMs became elevated. The driver shifted transmission into neutral(N), coasted to the side of the road, and the vehicle stalled. A message to “Start Vehicle” was displayed; however, while on the side of the road, the vehicle failed to turn off. The driver was able to shift into park(P) and had the vehicle towed to the dealer, where the transmission failed to shift out of park(P). The dealer determined that a spark plug was burned. The spark plug was replaced; however, before returning the vehicle, the new spark plug was also burned. The dealer then diagnosed the vehicle with engine failur. The dealer informed the manufacturer of the safety issue. The failure mileage was approximately 42,600.

Dear Chevrolet Customer Assistance, I am writing to formally report a serious safety incident involving my 2023 Chevrolet Suburban and to request an investigation by General Motors. My vehicle unexpectedly locked while the key fob was still inside the vehicle. Most concerning, my baby was also inside the vehicle at the time. I was unable to regain access to the Suburban, and because my baby was trapped inside, I had no reasonable option but to break a window to gain immediate access to her. This was an extremely serious and frightening situation. My primary concern is understanding how a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban equipped with a keyless entry system was able to lock while the key fob remained inside the vehicle. I am requesting that Chevrolet/General Motors: 1. Open a formal safety case regarding this incident. 2. Investigate why the vehicle locked despite the key fob being inside. 3. Have the vehicle’s keyless entry, passive locking system, key-detection components, software, and related systems inspected for a malfunction. 4. Determine whether there are any applicable recalls, technical service bulletins, software updates, or previously reported incidents involving similar circumstances. 5. Reimburse me for the cost of the broken window and related repairs, as the window had to be broken solely because immediate emergency access to my baby was necessary. I do not want this incident documented simply as a customer accidentally locking keys inside a vehicle. The key fob was inside the Suburban when the vehicle locked, and an infant was trapped inside as a result. I am asking that this be documented and investigated specifically as a potential vehicle safety or key-detection system issue. I can provide my VIN, photographs of the damage, repair invoices, key fob information, dealership inspection records, and any other documentation necessary for your investigation. Please provide me with a GM case number and written confirmation that this incident has been form

Filed Sep 7, 2026

The vehicle experienced an initial incident of significant engine power loss while traveling at highway speeds approximately two weeks prior to the eventual complete engine failure. During that incident, the vehicle unexpectedly lost engine power while traveling at speeds exceeding 65 mph. On Thursday, September 3, 2026, a second incident occurred within approximately one-half mile of leaving my residence. The vehicle again experienced a significant loss of engine power. I had already notified the dealership of the this occurrence and had a scheduled appointment for repairs the following day. I was attempting to drive the vehicle to the dealership as planned. Shortly after leaving my neighborhood, I stopped at a nearby gas station after the vehicle displayed a "Low Oil Pressure" warning on the dashboard. I also subsequently received an email notification from OnStar identifying diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0016. The vehicle was then driven again and subsequently experienced a catastrophic and complete loss of engine power while traveling at highway speeds above 65 mph. Following this failure, the engine would not turn over or crank and the vehicle could not be restarted. The sequence of events is significant because the vehicle had previously experienced engine power loss at highway speeds, the dealership had been notified of the initial incident, and the vehicle was being driven to the dealership for its scheduled repair appointment when the second power-loss event occurred. The vehicle subsequently suffered complete engine failure. I am documenting these events, including the dates, circumstances, dashboard warning, OnStar diagnostic notification, and sequence of failures, for purposes of establishing the history of the vehicle's mechanical problem and the circumstances leading to the catastrophic engine failure.

Complete engine failure on 2023 Chevrolet Suburban 6.2L. On October 31, 2024 while on the interstate. The truck shut off twice with no warning. I was able to make it to the side of the interstate twice to restart. The truck was taken to Serpentini Chevrolet and they stated no issues were found and send the vehicle back on the road. On December 13,2024 while on a state route, speed limit 55, 12,231 miles the Suburban abruptly slowed down and violently started to shake and knock. I pulled off to the side of the state route and waited approx 2 hours for the vehicle to be towed. The vehicle was towed to Serpentini Chevrolet and they stated the engine was blown and needed replaced. The vehicle was at the dealership until February 13, 2025 when the engine was replaced. The recall was released in April 2025 at which time the vehicle was taken in for the oil change “repair”. The truck now has 20,200 miles and is lacking power and starting to shake when accelerating from 0-50mph. I will be scheduling additional service in the coming week. While going through the blown engine, GM stopped responding to emails, did not compensate for months of payments I incurred while they had the vehicle and they are still selling unsafe vehicle.
