Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

Latest Apr 30, 2009
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Apr 30, 2009
14,551 units potentially affected
The defect: JAGUAR IS RECALLING 14,551 MY 2004 XJ VEHICLES. A POTENTIAL CONCERN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH THE INSTALLATION OF A NOISE VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS (NVH) PAD FITTED TO THE UNDER TRAY AND ITS INTERACTION WITH THE REAR UNDER FLOOR BRAKE PIPES, REAR CROSS MEMBER BRAKE PIPES, AND THEIR UNIONS. A REVIEW OF VEHICLE BUILD CONDITIONS PROVIDES EVIDENCE THAT A TOUCH CONDITION CAN EXIST BETWEEN THE UNDER FLOOR AND CROSS MEMBER BRAKE PIPES AND THE NVH PAD AT THE REAR OF THE UNDER FLOOR UNDER TRAY. WHERE THE TOUCH CONDITION EXISTS, WATER AND DIRT CAN COLLECT AND BE HELD IN CONTACT WITH THE PIPES AND THEIR UNIONS, ABRADE THE CORROSION PROTECTION AND REDUCE THE CORROSION LIFE OF THE PIPES ACCORDINGLY.
The risk: CORROSION OF THE BRAKE PIPES CAN LEAD TO A LOSS OF MECHANICAL INTEGRITY OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS CAN RESULT IN EXTENDED BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL COMBINED WITH REDUCED BRAKING PERFORMANCE IN THE CORRESPONDING BRAKE CIRCUIT. THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MAY DISPLAY THE WARNING MESSAGE 'FLUID LEVEL LOW', ALONG WITH THE BRAKE WARNING LAMP BEING ILLUMINATED. IN THE EVENT OF BOTH BRAKING CIRCUITS LOSING INTEGRITY AT THE SAME TIME, COMPLETE LOSS OF SERVICE BRAKES WILL OCCUR, THEREBY POTENTIALLY CAUSING A VEHICLE CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE UNDER TRAY AT THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND REMOVE AND DISCARD THE NVH PAD FITTED TO THE REAR OF THE UNDER TRAY. DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR UNDER FLOOR AND REAR CROSS MEMBER BRAKE PIPES AND UNIONS FOR RED RUST. IF RED RUST IS PRESENT ON THE PIPES OR ON THE UNION, THE BRAKE PIPES AND UNION WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEW COMPONENTS OF THE SAME DESIGN. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT JAGUAR AT 1-800-452-4827.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Mar 18, 2004
1,142 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG TRIM COMPONENTS HAVE A POOR APERTURE EDGE.
The risk: SHOULD THE AIR BAG DEPLOY, IT COULD BE CUT, CAUSING IT TO NOT INFLATE PROPERLY, WHICH INCREASES THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE PASSENGER AIR BAG APERTURE AND, WHERE NECESSARY, REMOVE ANY SHARP, SERRATED EDGES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 14, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT JAGUAR AT 1-800-452-4827.

Jan 8, 2004
31,731 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, WITH THE FORWARD DRIVE GEAR SELECTED AND THE VEHICLE STATIONARY OR IN A FORWARD MOTION, THE GEARBOX COULD POTENTIALLY SELECT REVERSE GEAR, WITHOUT INDICATION.
The risk: THIS FAILURE COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 1, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT JAGUAR AT 1-201-818-8500.

The contact owns a 2004 Jaguar XJ. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal felt spongy and an excessive amount of force was needed to depress the brake pedal. The brake pedal almost went to the floorboard before the vehicle came to a stop, causing the braking distance to be extended. The message that the brake fluid level was low remained illuminated. There was brake fluid leaking from a fractured cross-member brake pipe. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic, who found that the underfloor tray was corroded, causing the floor to fracture. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V144000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

I WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AND A FRIEND WITH THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL CAR TOLD ME ABOUT A RECALL ON THEIR CAR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM . THIS PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY PADDING INSTALLED FOR SOUND PROOFING ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHICH TRAPS DIRT AND MOISTURE AND CAUSES THE BRAKE LINES TO PREMATURELY RUST WHICH I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH. AFTER HAVING THE PANELS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PADS ARE INSTALL ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE AND THE RUST ISSUE IS PRESENT AS WELL . WHEN I ENTERED MY VIN NUMBER INTO YOUR SYSTEM IT'S TELLING ME THERE ARE NO OPEN OR IN REPAIRED RECALLED ON MY CAR HOW COULD THAT BE?

MADE A 500 MILE ROAD WHEN THE AIR SUSPENSION FAULT MESSAGE CAME ON ( YELLOW LIGHT), BUT THAT HAD HAPPENED PERIODICALLY AND SEEMED TO BE A COMPUTER FAULT. THE CAR RAN FINE. THEN AFTER A 2 DAY PERIOD OF NO USE, WHEN THE CAR WAS STARTED A RED WARNING LIGHT CAME INDICATING VEHICLE TOO LOW AND ON OUTSIDE INSPECTION THE CAR WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE TIRES. IN 2010, BOTH SUSPENSION STRUTS WERE REPLACED.

UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHEN BRAKING. DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT AUGUST 5, 2010 I DID NOT DRIVE THE CAR, IT WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF MY APARTMENT. AUGUST 6, 2010 AT 12:15PM I DROVE FROM MY APARTMENT TO THE PEBBLE BEACH LODGE PARKING LOT (APPROX. 5 MILES AND 10 MINUTES). AT 4:15PM AND AFTER A LONG LUNCH AT THE LODGE I DROVE MILE TO MY BANK PARKING LOT NEAR THE LODGE. I WENT TO THE BANK AND THE PEBBLE BEACH MARKET NEARBY. AT 5PM I DROVE HOME, I WAS DRIVING ON AN ASPHALT PAVED ROAD IN PEBBLE BEACH AT APPROXIMATELY 30 TO 35 MPH AND LIGHTLY APPLIED THE BRAKE (ONLY) AROUND A CURVE AND THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD (EG, VIGOROUSLY ACCELERATED). I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKES, I WAS STARTLED AND LET THE CAR COAST FOR A FEW FEET, THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC ON PEBBLE BEACH DRIVE AT THAT TIME. I RESUMED THE DRIVE HOME, AND I WAS VERY MUCH ALERT AND AWARE AND VERY CAREFUL, I APPLIED THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT INCIDENT AND STOPPED AT TWO STOP SIGNS BEFORE I APPROACHED THE THIRD STOP SIGN APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES LATER, AS I NEARED A 4 WAY STOP INTERSECTION, I SLOWLY I APPLIED THE BRAKES A NORMAL DISTANCE BEFORE THE INTERSECTION, BUT AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE THE INTERSECTION, THE CAR LURCH FORWARD AND I INSTANTLY PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL (ONLY, NOT THE GAS PEDAL) AND MOVED THE SHIFTER INTO THE PARK POSITION AND TURNED THE KEY OFF. I WAS ABOUT FIVE FEET FARTHER INTO THE INTERSECTION THAN I PLANNED. THE CAR ON MY LEFT DID NOT MOVE INTO THE INTERSECTION AS HE OBSERVED THE EVENT (AND GAVE ME HIS PHONE #), HE HEARD MY WHEELS SCREECH (FOR A SPLIT SECOND) AND MAYBE MY FRONT WHEELS MADE NOISE TOO, BUT I ONLY RECALL HEARING THE REAR WHEELS. *TR

I BOUGHT A 2004 XJR JAGUAR. IT WAS NEW AND HAD DEALER ADDED CHROME WHEELS($3,000 ADDITIONAL COST). THE RIMS WERE DEFECTIVE AND I ASKED THE DEALER TO IDENTIFY THE SUPPLIER OF THE RIMS SO THAT I COULD CONTACT THE SUPPLIER DIRECTLY. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT DID NOT KEEP A RECORD OF WHERE IT PURCHASED THE WHEELS. I HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME BELIEVING THAT AN AUTOMOBILE COMPANY OR DEALERSHIP IS NOT REQUIRED TO KEEPS RECORDS REGARDING PARTS ON A VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY PARTS AS CRITICAL AS THE WHEELS. PLEASE ADVISE. *TR

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
