Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling various 2003-2018 Crossroads, Dutchmen, and Keystone recreational trailers equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V755-5127.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
The risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
The remedy: Keystone will notify owners and instruct them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2018. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-574-535-2100, or Kidde customer service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 Big Sky, Challenger, Everest, Fuzion, Montana, and Raptor travel trailers and fifth wheels equipped with an IOTA ITS-50R transfer switch. These transfer switches, used in vehicles wired to be powered by a generator, may fail when exposed to elevated electrical loads and used in higher ambient temperatures.
The risk: As the transfer switch fails, it may overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
The remedy: Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will replace the IOTA ITS-50R transfer switch with a different brand transfer switch, free of charge. The recall began on October 8, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service by calling 1-866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 15-234.

The defect: KEYSTONE HAS REVISED THEIR REMEDY PROCESS AND IS AGAIN RECALLING CERTAIN 2009-2011 VEHICLES WITH THE “GENERATOR READY” OPTION, OR WITH STANDARD GENERATOR. SEE THE LIST ABOVE FOR THE AFFECTED MODELS. SOME IOTA ITS-50R TRANSFER SWITCHES ARE EXPERIENCING FAILURES WHEN EXPOSED TO HIGH ELECTRICAL LOADS. THE FAILURE IS CAUSING CONNECTIONS AND WIRING IN THE TRANSFER SWITCH TO DEGRADE AND OVER HEAT.
The risk: CONTINUED USE OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT REPLACING THE TRANSFER SWITCH MAY DAMAGE OTHER APPLIANCES, INCREASE THE RISK OF A FIRE, PERSONAL INJURY, AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.
The remedy: KEYSTONE WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TRANSFER SWITCH, FREE OF CHARGE. THE REMEDY FOR THE PREVIOUS RECALL (10V-594) WAS TO INSPECT AND TIGHTEN THE SWITCH CONNECTIONS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 24, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KEYSTONE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-866-425-4369.

ON SEPTEMBER 7 2016 I WAS TRAVELING WEST ON I 64 AT APROX. 4:00 PM IN TRAFFIC JUST AFTER MILE 19 I HERD A LOUD BANG AND SAW DEBRIS FLYING OFF OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY RV. I PULLED ON TO THE SHOULDER AND DISCOVERED THAT THE ENTIRE TREAD ON MY RIGHT REAR TIRE HAD SEPARATED CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WHEEL WELL AND KNOCKED OFF THE VALVE STEM FROM THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE LEAVING ME WITH 2 FLAT TIRES. I ALWAYS USE A TPMS AND AT THE TIME OF FAILURE THAT TIRE WAS AT 85 PSI AND A TIRE TEMPERATURE OF 109 DEGREES. AFTER GETTING HOME I INSPECTED THE TIRE AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING 2 SPLITS ON THE SIDE WALL ABOUT 4 INCHES APART RUNNING FROM BEAD TO BEAD, AN AREA OF OLD RUST ON THE STEEL BELTS, AND A FARE AMOUNT OF UNBOND OF THE RUBBER FROM THE STEEL BELT ALSO THE STEEL BELT WAS BROKEN IN A STRAIGHT LINE 90 DEGREES TO THE TREAD. MY RV IS STORED INDOORS SO THERE IS NO UV DAMAGE AND WHEN NOT IN USE I KEEP IT OFF OF THE GROUND ON BLOCKS.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
