Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
1
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling various 2003-2018 Crossroads, Dutchmen, and Keystone recreational trailers equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V755-5127.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
The risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
The remedy: Keystone will notify owners and instruct them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2018. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-574-535-2100, or Kidde customer service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain model year 2013 Montana trailers, models 3100RL, 3150RL13, 3400RL, 3402RL, 3582RL, 3625RE, 3725RL, 3750FL, and 3900FB, manufactured November 12, 2012, to January 30, 2013, and 2014 Mountaineer trailers, models 331RLT, 356TBF and 375FLF, manufactured August 21, 2013, to September 18, 2013. In all models except the Mountaineer 375FLF, the rear windows are labeled with an exit sticker, but the rear window is not intended to be a secondary emergency exit. With the Mountaineer 375FLF, the rear window is intended as the secondary emergency exit, but it may be blocked by the rear ladder.
The risk: In the event of an emergency, occupants could try to escape through the rear window, but would not be able to. This delay in their escape may increase the risk of injury.
The remedy: Keystone has notified owners, and dealers will remove the emergency exit sticker from the windows that were not intended to be emergency exits. Mountaineer 375FLF vehicles will have the window replaced, so that egress section of the window is on the opposite side of where the ladder is installed. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 9, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 15-232.

The defect: Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Montana vehicles manufactured November 1, 2012, to May 22, 2014, 2014-2015 Raptor vehicles manufactured February 3, 2014, to January 15, 2015, and 2015 Dutchmen Voltage vehicles manufactured May 6, 2014, to February 3, 2015. In the affected vehicles, a rivet for the quad entry steps may shear and fail, causing the steps to give when being used.
The risk: If the rivet shears causing the quad step to fail, the step user may fall, increasing the risk of personal injury.
The remedy: Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace two rivets joining the second and third step, and replace four rivets on the top step with fasteners, free of charge. The recall began on April 7, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 15-224.

Emergency Exit Obstruction

Opened May 1, 2015
Closed Jul 21, 2015

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a complaint of a partially obstructed emergency exit window on a 2014 Montana trailer manufactured by Keystone RV which alleged the roof ladder impeded full opening of one of the two rear emergency exit windows.ODI notes that these trailers are equipped with as many as three (3) emergency exits, often including the window adjacent to the rear window in question.ODI further notes that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) do not apply to this case, as no emergency exits are required for this vehicle. However, the window is clearly marked as an emergency exit, yet may not function as one.Misleading signage may lead to a delay in occupant egress and pose an undue risk to safety.Keystone's recall (15V-409) to remove the label marking the window as an emergency exit or to replace the window will eliminate the risk of an occupant mistaking the subject window as an emergency exit and result in one of the functioning emergency exits being used.Keystone's actions resolve the issue raised by this investigation and therefore this investigation is closed. The ODI reports cited in this investigation can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification number:10692688. Note:Complaint number 10583668 was erroneously associated with this investigation when opened.

HAD 2 TIRES BLOW OUT ON RECENT TRIPS. THE GOODYEAR MARATHON ST 235/80R16-E CAME ON OUR 2013 KEYSTONE MONTANA 3100RL 5TH WHEEL WHEN IT WAS BOUGHT NEW. TIRE PRESSURES WERE VERIFIED PRIOR TO OUR TRIP. ONE TIRE BLEW (SHREDDED) ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WHILE ON RT 95 IN MARYLAND ON JUNE 17, 2015. CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO CAMPER. I ADDED A TPMS TO MONITOR THE PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE OF THE TIRES (IN REAL-TIME) SHORTLY AFTER THAT INCIDENT. ON A SUBSEQUENT TRIP, A SECOND GY MARATHON BLEW OUT ON RT. 95 IN NJ ON JULY 29, 2015, ABOUT 175 MILES INTO OUR TRIP. IT WAS ALSO ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE CAMPER. STARTING COLD INFLATION WAS 78 PSI (PER GY INFLATION TABLES FOR WEIGHT ON AXLES). MONITOR SHOWED APPROX. 89 PSI AND 98 DEGREES (F) AT TIME OF BLOWOUT. WE WERE ON A SMOOTH, STRAIGHT SECTION OF ROAD AT THE TIME AND DID NOT HIT ANY DEBRIS OR HAZARD. IT JUST BLEW OUT THE SIDEWALL. STEEL BELT WAS BADLY DISTORTED. IN BOTH INSTANCES I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLES. CHANGING A FLAT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE TRAILER IS VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH LOAD RANGE G TIRES. I KEPT THE SECOND BLOWOUT AND TOOK IT TO GOODYEAR. THEY GAVE ME CREDIT FOR THE ONE TIRE. I HAVE THE THREE REMAINING GY MARATHONS IN MY GARAGE SHOULD A RECALL OCCUR IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IN READING THRU NUMEROUS RV AND BOAT OWNER FORUMS, THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH MANY LOAD RANGE E TIRES ON TRAILERS WHERE THE WEIGHT IS AT THE UPPER END OF THE TIRE RATING.

PURCHASED 2013 MONTANA 5TH WHEEL TRAVEL TRAILER EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR MARATHON 235 80/R16 TIRES. AFTER FIRST TIME OUT WE TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES ROUND TRIP. AFTER RETURNING HOME I INSPECTED THE RV AND NOTICED BUBBLES ON THE FIRST TIRE DRIVERS SIDE. I REPLACED BOTH TIRES ON THAT AXLE WITH TWO TOW MAX. IN JANUARY 2015 WE WERE PARKED IN ST. GEORGE, UT. I DID A WALK AROUND AND NOTICED TIRE CORDS HANGING OUT OF THE SECOND TIRE BACK ON DRIVERS SIDE. I REPLACED THAT TIRE BEFORE TRAVELING. ON THE WAY TO KINGMAN AZ, JANUARY 12, 2015, ON HWY 93 WE HAD A BLOW OUT ON THE REMAINING GY MARATHON TIRE. THE BLOW OUT RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO THE TRAILER. I BROUGHT THIS PROBLEM TO THE ATTENTION OF GY WHEN THE FIRST PROBLEM AROSE. GY SAID THEY HAVE A 6 YEAR WARRANTY. NO TIRE SHOP I HAVE BEEN TO WILL CONSULT WITH GY ON THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD NEVER PUT THESE TIRES ON ANY VEHICLE AGAIN. THESE TIRES HAD UNDER 4,000 MILES ON THEM. *TR

WE OWN A 2013 KEYSTONE MONTANA 3582RL 5TH WHEEL TRAILER THAT WE PURCHASED SEPTEMBER, 2012. THE TIRES WERE GOODYEAR MARATHON ST235/80R16, E RATED, DOT #1512. THE TIRES HAVE LESS THAN 10,000 MILES. ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2013, WE PULLED INTO AN RV PARK IN PENDLETON, OREGON, AND NOTED THE LEFT REAR TIRE WAS FLAT. THE ROADSIDE SERVICE, NOTED THE TREAD WAS SEPARATING AND THE SERVICE PROVIDER ESTIMATED THAT WE WOULD'VE HAD A MAJOR BLOWOUT IN ONLY A FEW MILES MORE. WE HAD THE SPARE PUT ON TO CONTINUE TRAVEL. WHEN HOME, WE TOOK THE TIRE TO A GOODYEAR DEALER AND THEY REPLACED IT WITH A 50% CREDIT NOTING THAT THE TIRE WAS HALF WORN ACCORDING TO THEIR MEASUREMENT. ON FURTHER EXAMINATION, WE TOOK THE TRAILER TO ANOTHER GOODYEAR DEALER AND THEY NOTED TREAD SEPARATION ON ALL THREE OF THE OTHER TIRES. AGAIN, TIRES WERE REPLACED WITH 50% CREDIT. THE TIRES WERE APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH OUT OF THE FREE REPLACEMENT WARRANTY PERIOD. THE TRAILER HAS NEVER BEEN OVERLOADED; WE CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE EVERY TIME WE TRAVEL; AND IT'S RIDICULOUS TO THINK THESE TIRES WON'T LAST BEYOND 10,000 MILES OR LESS AT $160 EACH. WE WILL NOT PURCHASE GOODYEAR TIRES AGAIN. *TR

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
