FAILING HEADLIGHTS
NISSAN AND FORD FOUND THAT THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT HEADLIGHT STAINLESS STEEL BULB TERMINALS MAY OVER TIME CAUSE ELEVATED CONTACT RESISTANCE AND OVERHEAT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR HOUSING.THIS CAN RESULT IN A HEADLIGHT FLICKERING, BULB OUTAGE AND HEAT DEFORMATION TO THE HEADLIGHT CONNECTOR.IN APRIL 1999, THE SUPPLIER OF THE HEADLIGHT FOR NISSAN AND FORD CHANGED TO A BULB USING THE STAINLESS STEEL TERMINALS THAT DID NOT MEET ORIGINAL SPECIFICATIONS.ON JULY 17, 2000, THE SUPPLIER BEGAN USING A BULB MEETING THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS.THIS PROBLEM CAN AFFECT INDEPENDENTLY EITHER HEADLIGHT BUT DOES NOT CAUSE SIMULTANEOUS FAILURE OF BOTH HEADLIGHTS. THE PROBLEM ALSO DOES NOT AFFECT FRONT PARKING LAMPS.AS A RESULT, THE COMPLAINTS TYPICAL REPORT SINGLE FAILURE OF ONE HEADLIGHT.THERE ARE NO CRASHES OR LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL REPORTED.A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT TREND HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED AT THIS TIME AND FURTHER USE OF AGENCY RESOURCES DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE WARRANTED.THE CLOSING OF THIS INVESTIGATION DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A FINDING BY NHTSA THAT NO SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT EXISTS.THE AGENCY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO TAKE FURTHER ACTION IF WARRANTED BY THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 NISSAN QUEST. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 102,000.

NISSAN QUEST 1999. GAS PEDAL IS BLOCKING AND REQUIRES REVERE STRENGTH TO BE PUSHED. THIS HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE DAY. ONCE THE PEDAL IS PUSHED HARD THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY THRUSTS, CAUSING POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. THIS ALSO CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY GAIN MUCH SPEED AND REQUIRES EXTRA CONTROL BY THE DRIVER. THE VEHICLE IS SIMILAR TO FORD WINDSTAR AND MERCURY VILLAGES AND WAS MANUFACTURED IN ONE OF THEIR PLANTS. FORD HAS ISSUED MANY RECALLS TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 1999 NISSAN QUEST. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH INTO A THE PARKING LOT THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO IDLE EXCESSIVELY UNTIL SHE SHIFTED IT INTO NEUTRAL GEAR AND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL SENSOR FAILED. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE ESTIMATED REPAIR COST WAS $875. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR SINCE THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 78,000.

SILICONE-BASED LUBRICANT OR GREASE CAN DAMAGE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS SERVICE INFORMATION Do not apply Silicone-based lubricants or grease to, or around, any interior electrical components. To avoid the risk of death or severe personal injury, do not directly spray Silicone-based lubricant or grease, or inadvertently overspray Silicone-based lubricant or grease onto any interior electrical components. These types of lubricants can be detrimental to the proper operation of electrical components.

12 VOLT BATTERY TESTING FOR IN-SERVICE VEHICLES SERVICE INFORMATION The following Service Information lists NNA procedural recommendations for establishing good connections while performing 12V battery testing. These recommendations are expected to promote uniformity during the connection process, therefore reducing the number of incorrect âTest with DCAâ and âReplaceâ results. HINT: If 12 volt batteries are allowed to discharge for a prolonged period of time, battery life may be drastically reduced. This condition may lead to premature battery replacement and customer dissatisfaction. IMPORTANT: ï· CPX-900 is now an accepted testing tool to use along with or in place of the DSS-5000 ï· CPX-900 operating instructions are found at: https://nissancpx900.midtronics.com/ ï· DSS-5000 operating instructions are found at: https://nissandss5000.midtronics.com/ ï· DCA-8000 is now a required testing tool to be used for all warranty replacement decisions. The DCA-8000 is also a more efficient charger than previously available, and will charge any available 12 volt lead acid battery safely and accurately as long as all precautions and inputs are made correctly.
