Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
6
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: BESTOP AFTERMARKET REAR SHELL ROOF RACKS,MANUFACTURED BETWEEN APRIL 27 AND MAY 20, 2004, DESIGNED FOR USE WITH THE BESTOP HARDTOP MADE FOR THE 1986-1995 AND 1997-2003 JEEP WRANGLER. THE COCKPIT COVER MAY NOT STAY LATCHED TO THE ROOF RACK BECAUSE THE LATCH BRACKET MISPOSITIONS THE ROTARY LATCH TO THE COCKPIT COVER. AS A RESULT, THE COCKPIT COVER MAY NOT STAY LATCHED TO THE ROOF RACK AND COULD SEPARATE FROM THE ROOF RACK. THIS RECALL ONLY PERTAINS TO AFTERMARKET REAR SHELL ROOF RACKS AND HAS NO RELATION TO ANY ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT INSTALLED ON JEEP WRANGLER VEHICLES BY DAIMLERCHRYSLER.
The risk: SHOULD THIS OCCUR, THE COCKPIT COULD CAUSE INJURY BY STRIKING PERSONS OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE OR COULD BECOME A DISTRACTION OR AN OBSTACLE TO OTHER DRIVERS, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
The remedy: BESTOP WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND PROVIDE A REPAIR KIT AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FREE OF CHARGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 16, 2004. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BESTOP CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT (800) 845-3567.

I AM ON MILITARY ORDERS AND AM PLANNING ON SHIPPING MY JEEP WRANGLER TO MY NEXT DUTY STATION LOCATED IN LIMA PERU. I AM TOLD THAT PRIOR TO CUSTOMS SHIPPING THE VEHICLE IT HAS TO BE CLEAR OF ALL RECALLS. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN SAN DIEGO LOCATED AT 777 CAMINO DEL RIO S SAN DIEGO CA PHONE # 619-224-4151, IS TELLING ME THAT THEY WILL NO LONGER PERFORM RECALLS DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD HELP WITH THIS SITUATION. REGARDS, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1992 JEEP WRANGLER. AFTER CHECKING THE VIN, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD TWO OPEN RECALLS, INCLUDING NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 94V106000 (FUEL SYSTEM) AND 02V041000 (SERVICE BRAKES). AFTER NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER OF THE RECALLS, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE RECALLS WERE NO LONGER BEING PRODUCED DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE. A REMEDY FOR THE RECALL WOULD NOT BE PROVIDED THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. UPDATED 08/04/17*LJ *CN

I HAVE PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN TO YOU UNDER REFERENCE #10429043, FOR A LEAKING GAS TANK. CHRYSLER HAS SINCE BLOWN ME OFF AND NOT ADDRESSED THIS RECALL OR SAFETY ISSUE. I NOW CARRY TWO FIRE EXTINGUISHERS IN THE CAR AWAITING THE IMPENDING EXPLOSION AND/OR FIRE. IN ADDITION, CHRYSLER TOOK MY CAR TO THEIR BAYSIDE JEEP DEALERSHIP AND CHARGED ME $217.75 TO INSTALL CLAMPS ON (I BELIEVE) THE GAS LINE. THAT LASTED ABOUT 6 MONTHS BEFORE THE LEAK STARTED AGAIN. [XXX] (NO LAST NAMES ARE GIVEN) FROM CHRYSLER ADVISED ME THAT THEY WOULD REFUND MY $217.75, WHICH WAS NEVER DONE. TODAY, I READ AN ARTICLE IN THE NY DAILY NEWS THAT CHRYSLER IS DODGING THE RECALL BY THE NHTSA ON GAS TANK PROBLEMS WITH MANY YEARS OF JEEPS, WHICH PROVES MY POINT MORE THAT THEY ARE DISTANCING THEMSELVES FROM THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES. I WOULD LIKE MY FOREVER LEAKING GAS TANK FINALLY FIXED AND I WOULD LIKE MY $217.75 REFUNDED; OR THEY CAN OFFER ME A BRAND NEW JEEP AS A REPLACEMENT, AS LONG AS THE GAS TANK DOESN'T LEAK. OTHERWISE, I WOULD LIKE TO BE FULLY INVOLVED IN ANY CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS AGAINST CHRYSLER. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
