Safety investigations
NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
Loss of Motive Power
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has identified 68 Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) reports for model years (MY) 2021 through 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles alleging a loss of motive power. Recall 22V-865 was issued by the manufacturer to address an engine shutdown condition in certain MY 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe vehicles. The complaints noted here contain both post recall remedy failures and failures in vehicles not included within the scope of 22V-865. An analysis comparing complaints received before the issuance of recall 22V-865 and complaints outside the scope of the recall has been conducted. The results show the current complaint rate is higher in the out of scope vehicles than it was for vehicles that were later covered by the recall. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the severity of the alleged defect in vehicles not included in recall 22V-865.ODI will also assess the scope and remedy effectiveness of the recall. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
High pressure fuel pump failure
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE21-021 on October 14, 2021, to investigate incidents alleging a stall/loss of motive power as a result of high-pressure fuel pump failures in certain model year (MY) 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines. During the investigation, ODI sought to determine if the related defect allegation was limited in scope to the recalled population. After review of information request response materials from both FCA and BMW, NHTSA determined that sufficient information to identify a comprehensive recall population could not be produced by FCA and BMW.During the investigation FCA filed recalls 22V406, 22E048, 22V767, and 22E087 which include vehicles not identified in the initial subject population by ODI. ODI also received recall 21V586, involving loss of motive power due to failed CP4 fuel pumps on certain BMW manufactured vehicles. An information request letter response received from BMW indicated that failed pumps on their vehicles were caused by an interaction between pump internal components and US market diesel fuel, leading to increased slip and eventual particle-generating wear surface. Additional work will be done to identify whether a similar root cause is associated with the FCA recalled population and if similar wear dynamics occur on pumps supplied to vehicle manufacturers other than those included in the recalled population.ODI has upgraded this investigation to an EA in order to 1) determine engineering specifications of internal pump components that are correlated with pump failure leading to loss of motive power or other safety related hazards, 2) identify vehicle populations equipped with alleged defective pump variants, 3) assess if vehicles equipped with alleged defective pump variants result in an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety and 4) gather and review any other relevant information related to high pressure fuel pump failure associated with the subject populations of recalls 21V586, 21V880, 21E094, 22V406, 22E048, 22V767, and 22E087.Review of the above information will allow NHTSA to confirm root cause and recall remedy viability, and identify and evaluate vehicle populations equipped with pump components that may pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID using the following complaint identification numbers: 11257550, 11351441, 11361603, 11361616, 11365300, 11365426, 11365858, 11366401, 11372337, 11373793, 11374797, 11376793, 11377871, 11378173, 11384377, 11386063, 11387018, 11399710, 11402550, 11415339, 11418868, 11418870, 11427075, 11434276, 11436807, 11437226, 11437249, 11437273, 11437292, 11437294, 11437394, 11437399, 11437403, 11437405, 11437423, 11437528, 11437565, 11437579, 11437580, 11437590, 11437679, 11437744, 11437781, 11437842, 11437993, 11438006, 11438008, 11438121, 11438138, 11438155, 11438392, 11438629, 11439359, 11439879, 11440397, 11443030, 11446542, 11448163, 11453556, 11458918, 11460558, 11469337
Underhood fires
On September 6, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24024 to investigate allegations of engine compartment fires in model year 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles. Most reports described fires starting on the front passenger side of the engine compartment while the vehicle was turned off, with several originating specifically at the electrohydraulic power steering pump's electrical connector. Following the opening of the investigation, ODI sent an information request letter to the vehicle manufacturer to assess the cause, scope, and frequency of the alleged defect. Additionally, ODI continued to receive reports of vehicle fires with a likely origin at or near the power steering pump. Throughout this investigation, ODI continued to discuss these new reports and the information request letter response with the manufacturer. On June 4, 2026, FCA issued recall 26V363 to address power steering fires caused by high electrical resistance at the pump's connector. Recall 26V363 includes the 781,459 vehicles identified in the opening resume of this investigation and expands the population to include all 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles produced between June 24, 2020, and December 2, 2024.This recall directly covers the vehicles and issues examined in this investigation. Accordingly, ODI is closing this investigation and is not requiring FCA to provide any additional information about this issue at this time. The Agency will continue to monitor field performance and reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

The vehicle is not performing as it did when first purchased. Through a series of recalls related to the main drive battery, the vehicle now lacks power when in electric mode pulling out on highways, passing on highways, or even driving at speeds over 40mph or so. I went to pull out on the highway this morning, for example, in electric mode, and there was a good 1-2 second sluggish acceleration before the gas engine kicked on and revved up without any kind of warm up. I can't imagine this is good for the gas engine. I never had that issue before these recalls. I'm also concerned the recent recall is going so long without any kind of resolution. I feel like Jeep has had so many safety, fire and performance issues they really should be buying these back and taking them off the road. Pulling out into traffic and not having acceleration for 1-2 seconds is very dangerous.

My 2021 jeep wrangler Sahara 4xe has had numerous EV battery issues. I have asked recalls to be fixed. It has had its battery replaced under a federal safety recall, still refuses to charge, and caused home charger to no longer to work. It has been in the shop since 8/11/26 and they are unable to get it to charge. This is a safety hazard. Issues with the EV battery/electrical system started back in 2021 after purchasing vehicle. Most recent issue with frying my home charging unit and not charging started in July of 2026.

My vehicle is currently in the shop getting the High voltage battery replaced for the second time due to a code showing battery voltage variation as well as getting the latest 21D recall completed. The Jeep currently has about 90,000 miles and has received all other recalls. The jeep no longer functions or performs like it did when I took ownership in February of 2022. It routinely loses power when trying to accelerate onto Highways or into traffic lanes or up hills. You can push the pedal down and there is a noticeable delay of several seconds before the vehicle starts to accelerate. The car no longer will stay in selected "Electric mode" and will instead kick the engine on at random times or take the vehicle out of "electric" and into "Hybrid". When at slow speeds (under 15MPH) in traffic the jeep lurches and slows, unable to maintain a constant speed. Also I have no way of proving that the overall power has been reduced through programming but the acceleration and advertised 375HP/470lb-ft does not seem to have the same feeling that it once did when first purchasing this vehicle. I believe there is a dangerous ongoing safety issue possibly with the programming, as well as the HV batteries. There were no warning lights coming on during the course of the last several months until I had a CEL for battery voltage variation and then it was taken to the dealership on the same day. There has been no communication with Jeep/Stellantis other than them issuing an unlimited mileage warranty on the HV battery. They seem to be replacing it with the same design, and therefore not addressing the issue only putting a band aid on the problem.

Since recall 68C was completed in February, the performance of the vehicle in Electric mode has degraded significantly. Prior to 68C, the gas engine was nearly impossible to engage in electric mode which was a good thing and clearly intended for extreme circumstances where unusually rapid acceleration was required. Also prior to 68C the electric acceleration was dependable and predictable both around town and at highway speeds. I live atop a 1.5 mile hill and could travel bottom to top without the engine engaging. Since 68C, I have consistently observed multiple changes in performance in electric mode: 1) the engine will engage much sooner and more frequently upon acceleration in any conditions. Wherever it happens, this is an unpredictable behavior that puts instant load on a cold, unlubricated engine. 2) At and approaching highway speeds in electric mode, the vehicle will begin to lose acceleration, hesitate and the gas engine will engage - again putting load on a cold, unlubricated engine. This can happen after several miles or after just a few miles. When the engine engages, it does not engage smoothly - the engine will rev high then drop down, then rev high then disengage - all inconsistently and all unexpectedly. While this is happening, the vehicle's acceleration or ability to maintain speed is inconsistent and constant manipulation of the throttle is necessary to ensure I'm not losing too much speed relative to the traffic around me. I don't know what changes were made as part of the 68C recall remedy but it has dramatically changed how electric mode is managed, has significantly decreased vehicle performance in electric mode and puts my and my passengers' safety at risk when I'm driving. The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer and I've confirmed that the latest software is installed. The component has not been inspected. The issues described above only presented after the 68C recall work was performed and occur without warning.

I had a 68c recall completed by Jeep and immediately after the recall, I noticed a reduction in power when accelerating, which causes me issues when trying to merge on the freeway and stay with the flow of traffic. This has been an ongoing daily issue. Also, the gas engine kicks on when it should not and loads immediately causing an erratic shifting of the gas engine, which causes the vehicle to lose power when it is needed the most. The recall was designed to supposedly protect the electric battery, but the software update that Jeep implemented has drastically changed the functionality and response timeframe at which the vehicle can respond when accelerating. I have tried to have Jeep address the issue, but they indicated the Jeep is operating as intended. It never operated like this until after this recall update and many other Jeep 4xe owners are reporting similar issues with propulsion and the gas engine loading erratically. Thank you for looking into this safety concern.
