Front Steering Knuckle Fractures
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is upgrading its Preliminary Evaluation (PE25006) of front steering knuckle fractures on model year (MY) 2014 through 2017 Range Rover Sport vehicles to an Engineering Analysis. ODI opened PE25006 on June 27, 2025, after receiving 12 Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire (VOQ) reports of the front aluminum steering knuckles fracturing in these vehicles. The reports describe the fractures occurring at the joint where the steering knuckle attaches to the upper control arm ball joint in one or both steering knuckles. Fracture of the front suspension knuckle can lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm. Detachment of the upper suspension arm results in the driver’s inability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed information supplied by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to Information Request letters as well as reviewed the data with JLR on numerous occasions. ODI further reviewed relevant data on a peer vehicle with a significantly similar steering knuckle design, the MY 2014 through 2017 Range Rover. Much of the information is contradictory and requires a deeper analysis that is available in an Engineering Analysis. On August 5, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) filed safety recall 25V514. This recall covers certain MY 2014 and all MY 2015-2017 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. The remedy for recall 25V514 addresses knuckles with and without a visible fracture. Knuckles that have developed a visible fracture will be replaced with a new knuckle of a substantially similar design. Knuckles with no fracture visibly present will have a brace attached to the upper portion of the front steering knuckle. JLR states that the purpose of the brace is to prevent the component from completely separating should a fracture develop. NHTSA continues to receive allegations of fractures occurring in the front steering knuckles of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. Two of the most recent VOQs received by ODI involve front steering knuckle fractures occurring on MY 2020 and MY 2021 Range Rover L405 vehicles. ODI will continue to investigate the component design and assess the potential safety risk as part of this Engineering Analysis and evaluate the recall remedies for Recall 25V514. Further, the scope of this Engineering Analysis will be expanded to include MY 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles as they have a substantially similar component design. The safety defect remains unresolved, and my vehicle has been out of service since March 2026. Despite repeated attempts to obtain repairs, the manufacturer has been unable to provide the necessary replacement parts, leaving the vehicle unusable for an extended period of time. I am increasingly concerned about the severity of the defect and the potential safety risks it presents to vehicle occupants and the public. Based on information available through owner forums, dealer communications, and other reports, it appears that this issue may be affecting a significant number of vehicles and may not be an isolated incident. The ongoing inability to repair affected vehicles due to parts shortages raises additional concerns regarding the scope of the problem and the manufacturer's ability to adequately address the defect. Owners are being left without safe, operable vehicles for months while waiting for a resolution. Given the significant safety implications, the extended period my vehicle has remained out of service, the lack of available repair parts, and the apparent volume of similar complaints, I respectfully request that NHTSA reopen its review and conduct a more comprehensive investigation into this matter. Vehicle: 2021 Range Rover Sport Component: Suspension – Dynamic Response / Active Roll Control System The vehicle experienced a failure of the Dynamic Response / Active Roll Control system, which is a hydraulic suspension stabilization system designed to reduce body roll and maintain vehicle stability during cornering and evasive maneuvers. Inspection by an authorized Land Rover service center confirmed that the failure was caused by severe corrosion and deterioration of the hydraulic lines supplying the Dynamic Response system. The corrosion caused hydraulic fluid leakage and a complete loss of hydraulic pressure, disabling the system. This failure occurred on a 2021 vehicle, and the amount of corrosion present on these hydraulic lines appears premature for a vehicle of this age. These lines are critical components of the vehicle’s stability system and would normally be expected to last significantly longer. When the Dynamic Response system loses hydraulic pressure, the vehicle loses an important stabilization function that helps control body roll and maintain handling stability. With the system disabled, the vehicle may experience increased body roll and reduced stability during higher-speed cornering or emergency maneuvers, which raises safety concerns. The issue was confirmed by the servicing Land Rover dealer. The dealer diagnosed hydraulic line corrosion and failure resulting in loss of system pressure. The repair is replacement of the front and rear hydraulic lines, refill and bleeding of the hydraulic system, and recalibration of the Dynamic Response system. The estimated repair cost is approximately $10,000. The vehicle is operated in New York State where winter road salt exposure is common. Hydraulic lines associated with a vehicle stability system should reasonably be expected to withstand normal environmental exposure, including road salt, for a longer period of time. The contact owns a 2021 Land Rover Range Rover. The contact stated that while his wife was operating the vehicle, the battery indicator warning light was illuminated on the instrument cluster. The following morning, the vehicle failed to start and became inoperable. An independent mechanic initially replaced the alternator; however, the alternator replacement failed to fix the vehicle. Several diagnostic tests confirmed a failure of the DC-to-DC converter. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V683000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) as a possible cause for the failure; however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 31,600.

Took my vehicle in for suspension noise and was told the front passenger side steering knuckle is cracked at the upper ball joint mount. There is a current recall for this issue for model years 2014-2017, but not for 2021 models. This issue appears to be greater than originally expected.

The contact owns a 2021 Land Rover Range Rover. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, and the contact heard an abnormal knocking sound. The contact stated that the knocking sound was getting louder and louder. The contact stated that the failure occurred while turning. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated and independently turned off. In addition, the contact stated the sound was like the vehicle was falling apart. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the contact was informed that the repair was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a failed front driver's side control arm and lower rear guard. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 37,000. The VIN was unavailable.

48V Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) battery enters an offline state and no longer communicates or functions as intended. This can result in illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ,loss of start/stop functionality and no communication during diagnostic sessions.
Body Control Module (BCM) does not fully meet US importation requirements. The BCM requires replacement with a new component which fully meets the US importation requirements.
