Front Steering Knuckle Fractures
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is upgrading its Preliminary Evaluation (PE25006) of front steering knuckle fractures on model year (MY) 2014 through 2017 Range Rover Sport vehicles to an Engineering Analysis. ODI opened PE25006 on June 27, 2025, after receiving 12 Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire (VOQ) reports of the front aluminum steering knuckles fracturing in these vehicles. The reports describe the fractures occurring at the joint where the steering knuckle attaches to the upper control arm ball joint in one or both steering knuckles. Fracture of the front suspension knuckle can lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm. Detachment of the upper suspension arm results in the driver’s inability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed information supplied by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to Information Request letters as well as reviewed the data with JLR on numerous occasions. ODI further reviewed relevant data on a peer vehicle with a significantly similar steering knuckle design, the MY 2014 through 2017 Range Rover. Much of the information is contradictory and requires a deeper analysis that is available in an Engineering Analysis. On August 5, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) filed safety recall 25V514. This recall covers certain MY 2014 and all MY 2015-2017 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. The remedy for recall 25V514 addresses knuckles with and without a visible fracture. Knuckles that have developed a visible fracture will be replaced with a new knuckle of a substantially similar design. Knuckles with no fracture visibly present will have a brace attached to the upper portion of the front steering knuckle. JLR states that the purpose of the brace is to prevent the component from completely separating should a fracture develop. NHTSA continues to receive allegations of fractures occurring in the front steering knuckles of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. Two of the most recent VOQs received by ODI involve front steering knuckle fractures occurring on MY 2020 and MY 2021 Range Rover L405 vehicles. ODI will continue to investigate the component design and assess the potential safety risk as part of this Engineering Analysis and evaluate the recall remedies for Recall 25V514. Further, the scope of this Engineering Analysis will be expanded to include MY 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles as they have a substantially similar component design. **Component/System:** 48V Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle system, including the DC/DC converter subject to JLR recall D126, MHEV battery/Battery Energy Control Module, starter generator/alternator system, 12V charging system, telematics control module, and related vehicle communication/electrical modules. The vehicle and components are available for inspection upon request. **Description of Complaint:** My 2020 Land Rover Range Rover P400 MHEV, VIN [XXX], experienced serious electrical and high-voltage/MHEV system failures involving the 48V mild-hybrid system and DC/DC converter system. Before the original failure, the vehicle displayed the warning message **“High Voltage Shutdown Not Possible — System Live.”** The warning would appear on the instrument cluster while driving. The vehicle later displayed **“Stop Safely — Electrical Fault Detected.”** The vehicle then shut down while in operation, and steering assist was lost/steering became locked or extremely difficult to control. This created a serious safety risk because the vehicle lost power/drive functionality and steering assistance while being operated. The vehicle was taken to Jaguar Land Rover Parsippany for the D126 DC/DC converter recall/interim repair. The DC/DC converter is part of the 48V MHEV system and manages power transfer between the 48V and 12V electrical systems. After the D126-related repair, the vehicle would not start at pickup and had to be jump-started. The dealer later diagnosed a telematics control module issue/parasitic draw, but the vehicle continued to have electrical and high-voltage warnings. After the interim DC/DC repair, the **“High Voltage Shutdown Not Possible — System Live”** warning returned while driving. The malfunction indicator/check engine light also came on. The contact received notification of NTHSA Campaign Number: 26V248000 (Electrical system) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted but was not able to do repairs due to remedy not being provided as of yet by manufacturer The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had stated that failure was experienced. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, unknowing vehicle warning light illuminated and vehicle stalled. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

The contact owns a 2020 Land Rover Range rover 3.0. The contact stated while driving on the highway heard loud bang, no warning lights illuminated, continued to drive. white grayish Smoke coming from underneath the vehicle and a burning oil smell. There was also a lot of oil spots visible underneath the vehicle. Pulled off the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure caused by timing components. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

Loss of all driving power. Gave fail code of Battery fail. We relpaced the battwry and still didnt work. Then were told we needed to replace the alternator. Replaced alternator and still failed. Now being told that we need to replace the dc dc converter...we have paid for the part but that part is on back order and we have now been without a vehicle for 6 months

On March 11, 2026, the vehicle's DC/DC Converter failed completely without warning. It was towed to the Land Rover of Monmouth (NJ) where this failure was confirmed. The failure of the DC/DC converter resulted in the vehicle going completely "dead" while driving with my wife and children. There was no warning. Fortunately for my family and I, it occurred on a side street by my home and did not occur on a highway or other busy road. Had this occurred on a highway or busy road, this would have absolutely put our lives in danger. As noted, the failure of the DC/DC converter was confirmed by the Land Rover of Monmouth (NJ) authorized dealership (I have a video from the dealership stating and confirming the failure). There were zero warnings at the time it occurred; it just lost power and shut down. Based on my research after this incident, it appears to be a pervasive problem with Land Rover and while there appear to be active recalls for certain Land Rover models, inexplicably, there is no current recall for this particular model. My wife and I are very concerned that even if/when it is repaired, this will happen again. This is the primary vehicle my wife uses for transportation with our young children and I am extremely afraid of the risk that this poses to their lives. I've notified the dealership from where I purchased it and was directed to contact Land Rover USA. I have not heard back from Land Rover USA. This well-documented, pervasive defect puts lives at risk and is extremely dangerous. As an attorney, I find Land Rover's knowledge of this frequent and extensive issue -- while only having a limited recall and not providing any information to owners of other Land Rover vehicles -- is a reckless disregard for the safety of others and creates an unreasonable risk of harm to others, like my family.

I am filing this complaint regarding my 2020 Range Rover Full Size Plug-In Hybrid, which has been inoperable for over three months due to ongoing fault codes and software-related issues. The vehicle has been at an authorized Land Rover dealer for an extended period. The dealer has confirmed they are unable to proceed without direction or software updates from Jaguar Land Rover corporate engineering. For the last 60+ days, the issue has been repeatedly escalated between the dealer and corporate engineering with no actionable resolution, no repair authorization, and no clear timeline provided. I have even reached out customer relationship center file customer compliant which has not been responded to by LRNA/HQ. My case number is CASE:[XXX] Vehicle Background: •Vehicle would not charge beyond 80%. I scheduled an appointment with the local dealers to inspect. LR: Identified a coolant issue within the high voltage system. oRepair: We were able to get covered by LR per a service bulletin; however, the repair process took over a month. •November Subsequent issue: Check engine light appeared along with a “rotten egg” smell after charging. I returned the vehicle to the dealership. oRepair: LR identified power distribution box resistor out of target range with resistance causing over-charging. This took a month and believe a software issue may have caused this as well as cannot happen on non-plug in. oReplacement of both the power distribution box and battery cost $1,471. •December: Picked up the car and parked it for a week while out of town. The first week back I drove to work and the check engine light came on again. I have not yet received the vehicle back and it continues to throw powertrain codes. Upon having my tires balanced and aligned I was informed that my fuel tank is rusting out. I have included pictues below for reference, I have attempted to have the dealer and Land Rover replace the fuel tank but they refuse to do so even though there is a 6-year Corrosive Warranty in place.

48V Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) battery enters an offline state and no longer communicates or functions as intended. This can result in illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ,loss of start/stop functionality and no communication during diagnostic sessions.
Body Control Module (BCM) does not fully meet US importation requirements. The BCM requires replacement with a new component which fully meets the US importation requirements.
