Front Steering Knuckle Fractures
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is upgrading its Preliminary Evaluation (PE25006) of front steering knuckle fractures on model year (MY) 2014 through 2017 Range Rover Sport vehicles to an Engineering Analysis. ODI opened PE25006 on June 27, 2025, after receiving 12 Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire (VOQ) reports of the front aluminum steering knuckles fracturing in these vehicles. The reports describe the fractures occurring at the joint where the steering knuckle attaches to the upper control arm ball joint in one or both steering knuckles. Fracture of the front suspension knuckle can lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm. Detachment of the upper suspension arm results in the driver’s inability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed information supplied by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to Information Request letters as well as reviewed the data with JLR on numerous occasions. ODI further reviewed relevant data on a peer vehicle with a significantly similar steering knuckle design, the MY 2014 through 2017 Range Rover. Much of the information is contradictory and requires a deeper analysis that is available in an Engineering Analysis. On August 5, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) filed safety recall 25V514. This recall covers certain MY 2014 and all MY 2015-2017 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. The remedy for recall 25V514 addresses knuckles with and without a visible fracture. Knuckles that have developed a visible fracture will be replaced with a new knuckle of a substantially similar design. Knuckles with no fracture visibly present will have a brace attached to the upper portion of the front steering knuckle. JLR states that the purpose of the brace is to prevent the component from completely separating should a fracture develop. NHTSA continues to receive allegations of fractures occurring in the front steering knuckles of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. Two of the most recent VOQs received by ODI involve front steering knuckle fractures occurring on MY 2020 and MY 2021 Range Rover L405 vehicles. ODI will continue to investigate the component design and assess the potential safety risk as part of this Engineering Analysis and evaluate the recall remedies for Recall 25V514. Further, the scope of this Engineering Analysis will be expanded to include MY 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles as they have a substantially similar component design. Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

On [XXX], my 2017 Land Rover Range Rover HSE Td6 diesel (VIN: [XXX] ) suffered a complete, catastrophic engine failure without warning at approximately 70 mph on [XXX] . My wife and our two infant sons (ages [XXX] and [XXX] ) were passengers. There were no prior warning lights or symptoms. The engine stopped instantaneously, eliminating power steering and power brakes while I was overtaking a semi-truck in the passing lane. We narrowly reached the shoulder safely. The odometer read 79,018 miles — inside both limits of the federally mandated 8-year/80,000-mile emissions warranty under 40 CFR §85.2103. The vehicle was 7 years old at time of failure. Hoehn Land Rover Carlsbad diagnosed complete engine failure caused by timing chain guide failure — a known defect pattern in the Ingenium diesel engine. The service manager stated failures like this "aren't that rare" with these engines. Repair estimate: $28,000–$30,000. Jaguar Land Rover North America (Case #[XXX]) denied the warranty claim entirely, offering $800, without ever evaluating the claim under the active federal emissions warranty. Their denial cited only the expired extended CPO warranty and a maintenance gap — neither of which constitutes valid grounds for denying an emissions warranty claim under 40 CFR §85.2103(d), as the manufacturer cannot demonstrate the maintenance gap caused a documented design defect. This failure pattern is documented in JLR Technical Service Bulletins LTB00735 and SSM74184. Land Rover Korea issued a recall for the same timing chain failure in 2020. No equivalent recall was issued in the United States for identical vehicles with identical engines. JLR has refused all requests for review or reconsideration for 24 months. My 2017 Land Rover, Range Rover has rusted fuel tank shields. I have owned this vehicle for seven of its nine years and has been babied. When I brought my Range Rover in for a NTSB MANDATED FACTORY RECALL THEY neglected even noting this issue. Which is a very common issue, I brought my rover into Hennessy Land Rover north atlanta on February 10th 2026. My service advisor was [XXX] . Not only did Hennessy north atlanta REFUSE TO REPAIR THE FEDERALLY MANDATED “SEVERE SAFETY” recall regarding my front suspension (may crack leading to a severe accident) as instructed by the NTSB— BECAUSE “THEY DIDNT HAVE THE PARTS FOR THE RECALL” — BUT IF YOU PAY THE $7000 they charge TO FIX THIS ISSUE , HAVING IT DONE IS NO PROBLEM. THE PARTS MAGICALLY APPEAR 😂 for $7000. As stated, Hennessy did not even address the fuel tank cover issue. THEY DID NOT BRING IT UP The reason this problem occurs is because of a process called galvanic corrosion. The fuel tank shield is bolted onto an aluminum heat shield, and the pairing of these two different metals accelerates the corrosion. Land Rover has acknowledged this problem and it's given priority due to the fact that this is a safety issue being that these shields are also responsible for holding the tanks in place. ANOTHER SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE THAT LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA IS CURRENTLY, SIMPLY IGNORING. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. IF HENNESSY CAN’T DO WHAT IS RIGHT THEY SHOULD BE SHUTTERED AND PETE ALVAREZ SHOULD BE FIRED. Please pass this along to Land Rover North America. This is my sixth Range Rover and after this experience will most likely be my last. I love this truck and I’ve loved all of them I’ve had. I’ve recommended them to friends but this was astonishing. Waited four hours for them to do NOTHING.FIX NOTHING. ADMIT TO NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. Per a factory recall — NTSB has ordered the following recall; Manufacturer Recall Number D027 NHTSA Recall Number 25V-514 Recall Status Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available Summary A concern has been identified on certain 2014 and all 2015 to 2017 ModelYear Range Rover (L405) and Range Rover Sport (L494) vehicles where thefront suspension upper knuckle joint could develop a crack. In extremecases this may lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm. Safety Risk In extreme cases where a crack in the front suspension knuckle has developed, this may lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm, which under extreme avoidance maneuver use conditions may compromise the vehicle's controllability and increase the risk of a crash. This has been identified by independent mechanics as well, as a SEVERE safety concern. When this vehicle was taken to Hennessy Land Rover of north atlanta; they advised me that “they didn’t have parts for the recall”. Although they explained to me if I paid out of pocket for the work they had the parts to do the task. Service advisor is Peter Alvarez. SO THEY DON’T HAVE THE PARTS FOR AN NTSB RECALL? UNLESS I HAVE $6000/$7000 For a recall with a “SEVERE SAFETY RISK”? THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. THESE PEOPLE SELL $120,000 TRUCKS AND THEN REFUSE TO UNDERTAKE GOVERNMENT MANDATED RECALLS. THEIR EXCUSE IS “WE HAVE THE PARTS BUT ONLY IF YOU BUY THEM”. This is totally unacceptable. I have a wife and a small child who ride in this SUV and have owned the car for 7 of its 9 years on the road. Always immaculately maintained If HENNESSY LAND ROVER (NORTH ATLANTA) refuses to perform government mandated recalls they should not be doing business. Especially with “SEVERE SAFETY RISK— I SAT FOR FOUR HOURS FOR THEM TO COME OUT AND TELL ME THIS — this is my sixth Range Rover. If this is not remedied never again. The contact owns a 2017 Land Rover Range Rover. The contact stated that while driving 25 MPH, there was smoke coming from the front of the vehicle. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to Meineke Car Care Center and was diagnosed and determined that the coolant pipe needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact a request for a Goodwill service from the dealer would be sought. The dealer denied the request. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 68,570.

I'd like to report an incidence of manufacturer non-compliance. We've had recall number 25V-514 open since September 30, 2025. The dealership has said that they don't have a part and simply left it at that. I called Land Rover, and they also indicated that they don't have a part. They won't provide any more details. It has now been 176 days since this we received the letter. I'm sure that Land Rover knew about this problem long before the letter was sent. This is a beyond unacceptable timeframe to process this recall. They are putting the lives of consumers at risk. The letter states, "Suspension arm detachment can cause a loss of vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash." This is a safety issue and they have an obligation to fix it. This is beyond the "reasonable" timeframe to complete a recall.

I received a notice regarding NHTSA Recall 25V-514 and despite repeated attempts to get the problem fixed, I have repeatedly been told that no solution is available. I am fearful that a failure of the knuckle joint will cause a severe incident resulting in injury or death.

The dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were not yet available for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure.
