Loss of motive power due to engine failure post recall remedy
On January 16, 2026, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ26001. This investigation was opened to assess the remedy effectiveness of Recall 25V-274. ODI has received complaints alleging engine failure in vehicles after the recall remedy had been completed, whether that remedy involved an oil viscosity change or a complete engine replacement. General Motors (GM) issued Recall 25V-274 to address concerns of engine failure in the L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issue. GM’s recall remedy for Recall 25V-274 consisted of two different repairs, either an oil viscosity change or an engine replacement, based on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. ODI continues to receive reports of engine failures after the completion of the recall remedy. To date, ODI has received 499 complaints alleging post-remedy engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V-274, 473 of which involved an oil viscosity change and 26 a complete engine replacement. Additionally, ODI has received 191 reports of L87 engine failures in engines produced after the production period cited in Recall 25V-274. GM reported receiving 6,953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysisto continue investigating complaints of post-remedy engine failure. ODI is expanding the scope of this Investigation to include engines produced after the production period cited in the recall. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
Loss of motive power due to engine failure
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure failures in the L87 6.2L engine produced by General Motors (GM). Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. These engines are installed in Model Years (MY) 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2021-2024MY Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV vehicles. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001). GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274. This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Loss of motive power due to engine failure
On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007). Tried to start the Chevy Silverado 1500 remotely and it was unresponsive using the remote start key fob. The truck was then started with the push start button inside the truck. There was no instrument panel errors or warnings when the truck was first started and began driving it. Upon taking the truck out of park and starting to drive, the brake pedal was extremely hard to push, and the steering was extremely hard to turn. It took a long distance to stop the truck while moving very slowly in a parking lot. The truck was also very hard to steer as if all power steering assistance had failed. The truck was put in park. Immediately after the truck was shifted into park, the instrument panel reported ABS, powertrain and steering column lock errors. After being turned off for 20 minutes, it was restarted and the only error on the instrument panel was a check engine light. The brake pedal pressure returned to normal and the breaking started working. The steering was now easy to turn and working as well. It was drove slowly, a very short distance to the dealership where it has been for the last week and a half. They have diagnosed and replaced the ECM, ABS and master cylinder. They continue to receive braking system error codes.

My vehicle was serviced for the Chevy L87 recall a couple of thousand miles ago. It currently has 13343 miles on it and I was driving down the road and then all of a sudden the engine just stopped and my vehicle lost power leaving me stranded on a state route XXX in [XXX], which is a dangerous route with nowhere to pull off. This issue has been going on for years now and Chevy needs to make this right. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While operating the vehicle, the front electric drive motor suffered a failure, triggering reduced propulsion warnings and rendering the primary electric powertrain inoperable. The vehicle was towed to an authorized GM dealership service center, where the defect was confirmed. To replace the failed front drive unit, technicians had to drop the front subframe cradle and completely dismantle the front suspension and steering assembly. During inspection of the disassembled components, severe mechanical galling and metal scoring were documented on the cast aluminum front steering knuckle mounting boss. Reinstalling suspension and steering hardware against structurally compromised, gouged aluminum presents a severe safety hazard of metal fatigue, stress fracture, or joint failure under dynamic loads. This vehicle is factory-rated to tow heavy loads. Dynamic cyclic forces transferred through a compromised front knuckle assembly—particularly when towing on a weight-distribution hitch—create an acute risk of structural failure and loss of directional control at highway speeds. The vehicle has remained grounded and out of service at the dealership for over 50 continuous days undergoing this high-voltage and chassis teardown.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ, 3.0L Duramax. When the DEF system begins displaying the “miles until 65 MPH max speed” warning, the warning takes over the Driver Information Center and cannot be acknowledged or dismissed with the steering-wheel thumbwheel. This prevents me from accessing unrelated DIC information, including Trip 1/Trip 2 and other vehicle information, potentially for hundreds of miles. The truck recently received the latest available software update. I am requesting that GM document this as a software/usability defect and provide a case number. The DEF warning should remain available without preventing access to other DIC functions.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle had been experiencing inaccurate DEF gauge readings since the purchase, and the failure mostly occurred while towing a camper or trailer. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH on the highway and hauling a camper, the message that the DEF tank was empty and needed to be refilled was displayed, and the vehicle went into LIMP Mode and decelerated to 35 MPH. The driver continued driving and pulled over to a safe location. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was determined that the DEF tank needed to be replaced; however, the manufacturer denied authorization because the required preliminary procedures had not been completed. The manufacturer General Motors LLC was notified of the failure by phone. The failure mileage was approximately 4.

Emission Recall. General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2023-2024 model year Chevrolet Colorado / Silverado 1500 and GMC Canyon / Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 2.7L engine (RPO L3B). The Engine Control Module (ECM) may not sufficiently control fuel injector flow rate under certain driving conditions. Dealers are to reprogram the ECM.
This PI is to instruct dealer on diagnostic procedures that need to be completed prior to replacing a radio or IPC display
General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2024 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. These vehicles may have a Brake System Control Module (BSCM) that does not correctly set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) or illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Check Engine Light) if certain system faults with the potential to affect the vehicle’s emissions control system were to occur. Dashboard warning messages and warning lights for traction control, stability control, and brake system would remain functional in the event that a fault that could potentially impact drivability is detected. Dealers are to reprogram the BSCM.
This preliminary information advises a dealer on how to email GDS2 session logs into Technical Assistance.
This preliminary information communicates a diagnostic tip for the tailgate release system and tailgate ajar message.
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
