SACKEY SUBMITTED A PETITION TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) BY LETTER DATED APRIL 18, 2003, REQUESTING THAT NHTSAFURTHER INVESTIGATE THE DEFECTIVE COLLAPSIBLE STEERING SHAFT SYSTEM ON 1987-1995 VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BY THE DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION.IN PART BECAUSE OF 49 CFR ? 30120(G), NHTSA HAS DECIDED TO LIMIT THE SCOPE OF THE PETITION VEHICLES TO 1993-1995 MODELS, EXCLUDING THE 1993 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE AND 1994-1995 DODGE RAM SERIES TRUCKS THAT WERE RECALLED (93V210 & 96V230) FOR STEERING COLUMN FAILURE.IF THE ANALYSIS OF THESE VEHICLES HAD IDENTIFIED A POTENTIAL PROBLEM, THE SCOPE COULD HAVE BEEN EXPANDED IN AN INVESTIGATION.A REVIEW OF ODI'S DATA BASE SHOWS NO RECENT COMPLAINTS AND A LACK OF A COMPLAINT TREND CONCERNING THE SUBJECT ISSUE ON THE SUBJECT VEHICLES AS A WHOLE OR BY INDIVIDUAL MODELS.THEREFORE, THE PETITION IS DENIED.FOR DETAILS, SEE FEDERAL REGISTER NOTICE VOLUME 68, NO. 130, JULY 8, 2003.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CONTACT HAD TO USE BOTH FEET TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS AND BRAKE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 96V099000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO COURTESY CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM OF SUPERSTITION SPRINGS (LOCATED AT 6130 E AUTO PARK DR MESA, AZ 85206, 480-569-2991) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ACTUATOR PISTON ASSEMBLY AND THE PUMP MOTOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THEY DID NOT MAKE FAULTY PARTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS; HOWEVER, THERE MAY BE COVERAGE VIA AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT CALLED THE CONTACT BACK TO CONFIRM IF THE BRAKE BOOSTER PARTS WERE COVERED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY OFFER PARTIAL REIMBURSEMENT IF THE VEHICLE WERE TOWED TO A DEALER. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED.
