Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
6
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: THE DUAL FUEL TANK SELECTOR VALVE MAY MALFUNCTION AND CAUSE AN OVERFILL CONDITION IN ONE OF THE FUEL TANKS, RESULTING IN AN OVERFLOW OF FUEL PAST THE FILLER CAP.
The risk: THE OVERFLOW OF FUEL PAST THE FILLER CAP CAUSES A FUELLEAKAGE, WHICH CAN RESULT IN A FIRE WHEN EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.

THIS WAS THE INBOARD TIRE OF A PAIR ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE VEHICLE. WHILE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 70 EASTBOUND OUT OF KANSAS CITY IT EXPLODED, SPLITTING THE STEEL BELTS CROSSWISE. EXCEPT FOR THE AREA OF THE BLOWOUT THE TIRE REMAINED RELATIVELY INTACT AND DID NOT SEPARATE. THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AT THE TIME WAS APPROXIMATELY 85 DEGREES F. NO ROAD HAZZARDS WERE OBSERVED OR FELT PRIOR THE THE EXPLOSION. TIRE PRESSURES HAD BEEN CHECKED 30 MILE EARLIER AND WERE 60-65 PSI PER VEHICLE MANUAL. PROTRUDING BELTS STRUCK THE SEWAGE HOLDING TANK KNOCKING A CORNER OUT OF IT AND SPILLING CARGO ON THE HIGHWAY. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A STOP ON OUTBOARD TIRE WITHOUT ACCIDENT.TIRE WAS PURCHASED ON 8/5/99 IN TEMPLE TEXAS FROM FIRESTONE STORE #007196-4361, HAD APPROXIMATELY 6000 MILES ON IT OVER SOME EXTREMELY HOT ROADS. A REPLACEMENT TIRE (COOPER TIRE) WAS PURCHASED FROM HIGGINSVILLE TIRE SERVICE HIGGINSVILLE MO 64037 660-584-2504. HIGGINSVILLE DEALER EXAMINED TIRE AND SAID THAT HE COULD NOT IDENTIFY ANY TRAUMA IN AREA OF BLOWOUT AND PRESUMABLY GAVE CREDIT BASED ON 70 PERCENT TREAD WEAR(WHICH SEEMED EXCESSIVE TO ME). NO CREDIT WAS DOCUMENTED ON THE INVOICE BUT TIRE WAS CHEAPER THAN I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED AND CHEAPER THAN THE ONE THAT BLEW UP. (TIRESIZE: 215/85/R16)( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 215/85/R16 )

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
